I haven't named him yet. The wife picked him up this afternoon. I am guessing, he is about a year old. He ate a large rat tonight. Name ideas?

Thanks for the comments folks. A burm has been on my want list for awhile now. He was a joint birthday anniversary gift. (Yes, my wife wanted him as much as I did) He choked down a large rat last night. Previously he had been fed small rats, and he seemed a bit under weight. I am working on a cage for him now. Thinking I'll name him ghost.

I named him Ghost. I had to take him out yesterday, as he took a huge crap, and dumped his water dish. So, while he was out I snapped a few more pics. He's a bit hissy till you get him out, but then he seems to be a bundle of curiosity. And, Let me see.... On my Bday, I will be39 (Not as old as you Chuck!) Our anniversary will be 6 years, and the wife's bday at the end of may, she will be 33. And if I'm wrong she'll beat me to death.:freakedout:

Yeah, I'm following the HBO series. I expected to be a little disappointed,
as I've read the entire series three times, and listened to the audiobooks. So far though it's not too bad. I have a few issues with the casting, but meh. what are you gonna do.
Must be nice to be able to actually hold you albino burm.. He hisses like a radiator when I take him from his cage, but he has not struck yet. Once I get him out though, he does just fine. Calm and curious.

This from the guy that lives in the country that is home to some of the most beautiful snakes on the planet, and has a nice room full of hots, and has a scrub enclosure that I would happily move into. :freakedout:

I don't know about yours, but it seems like 3 of my 4 snakes know I just cleaned out their enclosures and seem to take a huge crap as soon as I put them back in!!! At least they are still on paper towel substrate so it's not that difficult to spot clean.

Pissy isn't the word. Stick a knife in a truck tire....that is what his hissing sounds like when you open up his cage and you don't have a juicy rodent for him.

But if you can get past that, yes, he's a big, curious baby.

TeaNinja
09-08-11, 11:27 PM
sometimes i will put nigma on my shoulders and he won't actually hiss, but he will put his face RIGHT next to my ear and give a creepy, almost hissy exhale lol.

So he's pushing 7' now and he needed a bigger enclosure. It ain't pretty but it's water proof and functional. Dimensions are 8' x 30" x 18" tall. It has a 150 w che on one end and a 100 w che on the other. also a red light towards the center on a timer. :O_o:

Thanks for the comments folks! Admittedly I had to rush the cage, and built it on a budget, mostly from reclaimed wood, paint, and primer. All told it cost me about 20 hours and around $75.00 to make. But, it holds water. My main concerns were that it be structurally sound and able to stand up to high humidity it does do that.

Shauny, I moved him today. He's been exploring every inch ever since. Trying to fin a means of escape I'm sure.

Norm, He's my Rock Star. Everyone loves this guy! Intimidating until they see he's just a big baby.

Thanks, Chuck, How's Your snake room coming along?

Rob, I'm sorry I have been remiss. Here are some exploration pics to tide you over until a weekend photo shoot.

Oh that one is full of mischief alright. He's broken out of his enclosure at least 5 times. Which is why I always keep the door closed. Luckily he is big and easy to find when he does decide he wants to go for a "walk"

Thanks, Chuck, How's Your snake room coming along?
Got them moved in and all was find till it started getting colder. That's when i realized it was going to take two heaters to keep the temp up. Their cages only took up about 10% of the room. So i moved them to the smaller room in the basement. I can keep the heater on low and the room stays nice and toasted. I figure why pay to heat a huge room that 90% empty. Once i get my new camera i'll get some pictures.

Thank you. I am hoping to be able to pick up a granite in April. I have to say I just love Burms.

Wow! He's beautiful! How long is he now and what's his weight? He is pushing 7 feet and 15 pounds give or take. I am going to see if I can get him a couple of rabbits this weekend. The rats don't cut it anymore.

Yeah that had me worried for awhile. But never seemed to bother him. Hopefully he'll settle down now that he is in his bigger cage.

Out of all the reptile I've kept, burms are my absolute favorite so far. I've had three (one long time ago and two currently) and, for the most part, as long as you don't make newb mistakes, keep them on a good feeding schedule, learn their body language (which is pretty straightforward), and handle fairly often, they are an easy snake to keep regardless of the size. I've seen a few exceptions but they're mainly a good large snake to keep. I've also considered them a gentle giant with the right keeper.

I agree whole heartily with you both. I'll ad Boas to the mix as well. It sounds cool to have a Burmese python or a boa constrictor. for awhile. Then the 20 gallon aquarium isn't big enough or rats are more expensive than I thought. Sadly I understand this often tragic line of thought which is why I cut my collection back considerably and kept my absolute favorites each of which I am committed to giving my very best care until their end days. But I digress we're going to see a lot more of theses brilliant gentle giants on our local craigslist in the months to come. I hope there are enough committed folks out there with big hearts to take them in.

BurmeseGuy
02-04-12, 11:17 AM
I will be cruising craigslist in the coming months...it's sad here in Indy one owner who was breeding Burms sold her breeders for 50.00 bucks...and they were both 13' and she had a Retic that was 15' she sold for 100.00...and I'm not sure of the owners but it was sickening to see...she got rid of all her snakes stating feeding them was too expensive...as a responsible owner I know that day will eventually come but that's part of caring for these giants...who knows maybe I'll dedicate a room in my house and rescue what I can...

Rogue628
02-04-12, 01:02 PM
I've been cruising CL to places that are as far as I'm willing to travel to pick up looking for any snakes that need rehoming. I also check a few other sites for animals as well. I'm willing to pay for shipping if they'll ship. With the ban date getting closer, I fear some animals are going to get let lose and I'd rather take in the animal, doing whatever I need to do to give it the best home I can, even if it means I have to do without something.

BurmeseGuy
02-06-12, 12:48 AM
Yeah Rogue it's just simply sad and I agree some probably will be let loose...we had some let loose in a local park (just outside Indianapolis, IN)...I've found several juvenile Burms...2 in winter frozen to death and then one this past spring that was just beaten to death like you wouldn't believe...my youngest son (12) actually found it and brought it to me and asked me why would someone do this to a Burmese...tears welled up in his eyes and all...just terrible...good luck in what your doing...

millertime89
02-06-12, 12:57 PM
the way some people treat animals is just sickening. Especially the ones that claim to love animals then state "oh no, just cats and dogs and fish."
