Rats are so adorable and do make good pets but alas i can't look at it and not think about what a tasty meal it would make for my pets....

I had a friend from Ecuador who would smack his lips when we went to the pet store and he saw the guinea pigs. Apparently they are delicious.

My dad taught me a lesson as a child, if something bites you, bite them back:P (learned it the first time on a crayfish... who knew they are filled with green goop=/)
The rat ate some of my food and since he cant share his, i ate him lol.
Very very cute.I am not a fan of albinos myself.I actually kept a black male with little white feet out of our last litter. My son got a nice blue hooded female, she is super friendly too.I should know better then to raise rats, I always end up keeping some for pets.
They are just so darn cute.I should only buy frozen.

any hunter who has consumed squirrel or rabbit knows what roasted rodent tastes like.
The first chili recipes - guess why and what meat. ;)
I fed one to my dog once.It was prekilled of course. He ate it too.
I also raised rabbits for years. We put as many in the freezer as we fed to the dogs.Good eating.I didnt kill them, I made my older son do that for me.But I can skin and gut a rabbit very fast with a good sharp knife.

how do you get an albino rat? can just 1 parent be het for albino or do both need to be?

AFRMA - Rat Genetics, part 1 (http://www.afrma.org/ratgenpart1.htm)

ty sir, i couldn't really find anywhere good to read up.
it didn't really explain what to what = albino, but i'll keep looking around. i was just wondering if just 1 of my normal rats were het for albino or if both were or what. because 1 out of the 12 babies is albino.

I bred mice (not rats but heck might as well be the same thing) both parents looked normal as far as ablino or not albino goes. However when Cookie had her babies I believe 2 of them were albino. Both mice were bought from a live feeder store so who knows about their genes or lineage.
Maybe that will help? Dunno.

My understanding is both need to be either hets or homogeneous
I think it works out like this.
Het+normal=50% hets, 50% normals
Het+het = 25% Albino, 50% Het Albino, 25% Normal
albino+normal= 100% het albinos
Albino+het= 50% Albino, 50% Het Albino
Albino+albino=100% Albino

Ive eaten rabbit once, i had just seen bear grylls hunt a rabbit with a stick. so i went to my field where its impossible not to see like 15 rabbits when walking through and got one, out of respect i ate it. took me forever to skin and gut it tho.

venison is really good i think we still have about a half of one in the freezer.
mine goes sooo fast it sucks ohh well maybe this year ill get my second tag
I dont like wild rabbit.Ours were nice and tender because they were young.I dont like wild turkey either.Venison is okay but not a favorite.I have to say my parent raised meat goats and made goat sausage that was awesome. They dont raise them anymore, only have pet goats.

I personally enjoy rats with markings and I think the same can be said for many many people. It just adds more personality. I picked both of my girls because of markings alone. One is this white rat with a gray hood while the other is this dirty brown color with white feet, white star on her belly, and a white spot on the back 2/3 of her tail.

They all taste the same to the snake, I prefer albino rats personally because they are easier to find if they get out, that being said we have snow 6 months of the year, so if they actually get out I'm in trouble.

wish i can find the website i read it from but it said that albino rats have bigger litters,
dont know if its true but i have 2 albino females and there littlers are always 12 to 18 and my black and white rats have litters of 6 to 12.
Assuming you bought your rats from either a reptile breeder or pet store, the rats you have are considered 'genetic junk' rats and are generally sold as feeders or feeder breeders.
Normal old hooded rats.
An actual rat breeder would have no use for these types of rats in their collection.
As for albino hoodeds; in the reptile community, they are as good as any other coloured rat; no better, no worse.
They are also very common.
Though I no longer breed my rats for colour or pattern (I now breed prolific breeders and for good health) roughly 45% of my collection is albino.

Kane (our BP) thinks they are all quite tasty..
My very first albino male BP is also named Kane.
You would be surprised how many people are completely adamant that their snakes will ONLY eat rats that are all white or all black.

stephanbakir
04-11-11, 01:31 PM
Is there a known reason why the snakes are drawn to these colours? or is it just the owners making assumptions?
Damion930
04-11-11, 01:41 PM
Yeah I had a guy tell me his bp wouldn't eat a rat that had the slightest bit of color on it and I thought to myself I don't think any of my snakes take the time to examine ther food that closely before they eat it
stephanbakir
04-11-11, 01:43 PM
My snakes just eat it, and my lizard tilts his head, gives it a good 5-10 seconds of the one eyed rape-eye and charge it down.

Not sure we have moved onto cannibalism, wait a few years till the Bloc Quebecois wins the election and QC separates, maybe then cannibalism will rise once more.

Rat the third white meat. Bet it taste just like chicken.:)
"Is there a known reason why the snakes are drawn to these colours? "
Scent is the heavily predominant sense used when attracted to a food item, not colour.
(Though I had a real issue when they came out with purple ketchup...)

hahah i cant believe that who would even think that. weird, i always thought snakes with heat pits saw in a kind of infrared vision.

Infra-red vision is only used in the dark when the eyes stop being useful.

I think we will be fine, QC will be ok too till the bloc finishes building the wall. Then its Escape from New York all over again.
