View Full Version : The food & recipe thread (Let's cook!)
Alright, first of all this isn't a thread about the type of food your snakes or lizards eat. This is a thread for everyone to share their favorite recipes with everyone else. They could be yours, your friends, your grandmas, moms or something you threw together last night at the last minute.
I also apologize if this has already been discussed.
I'll start with a favorite of mine:
Clam Chowder
1 cup diced celery,
1 cup diced yellow onion,
1/2 cup chopped bacon,
2 cups diced potatoes,
2 cans chopped clams,
3 cups clam juice,
1/2 gallon heavy cream,
1/2 cup chopped parsley,
2 Tbl spoons dried thyme.
Saute off your celery and onions in a little bit of canola oil. When they are almost translucent add your bacon and saute for a few minutes. Add your clam juice to the celery and onions and bacon. Bring to a simmer. Add the heavy cream. When it comes near a simmer turn down your heat from full to about medium. Take about 1 cup of flour and add some canola oil to it. This is called a roux. Don't make it too thick or too thin. Use a wire whip to get all of the lumps out. Add the roux to the soup until desired thickness. Add the parsley and the dried thyme, and the clams in juice. Salt and pepper to taste. If you want you can even add some Tabasco sauce for added flavor. I cook the potatoes separate and add them in last.

Monster Cookies
1 cup Sugar
1 1/8 cups Brown Sugar
3 Eggs
½ tbsp Vanilla
2 tsp Syrup
½ cup Margarine
1 ½ cups Peanut Butter
2 tsp Baking Soda
¼ lb Chocolate Chips
¼ lb M&M’s (little ones work the best)
4 ½ cups Oatmeal
Bake @ 350 for 7- 10 minutes
I typically pull them out of the oven before they are "done" otherwise they get over cooked, but everyones oven is different, you will have to experiment with this.

You drove me to this.....This is from a blog that I had going a while back. I have censored it for this forum. recently, I have added ghost peppers to the recipe. Use at your own risk.
Chili!
(Caution: Safe handling of hot peppers is recommended do not cut hot peppers and then perform bathroom duties without thoroughly washing your hands. If you get that oil on your sensitive areas, IT BURNS!)
1 or 2 pounds of ground beef whatever you feel like.
1 - 2 lb. bag of dried black beans
3 jalapeno peppers
3 habenero peppers
5 cloves of garlic
2 medium sized onions
1 bell pepper, whatever you like red yellow Orange green, I use whatever is in the fridge.
2 - 29 oz. cans tomato sauce
3 - 10 0z. cans of diced tomatoes and green chile's
3 cups water
Sugar
Salt
Chili Powder
Pepper
Directions:
Soak beans for a day or two before hand.
Slice and dice all fresh ****, onions, garlic, jalapenos, habenero's and bell peppers. Brown hamburger. Throw hot peppers, onions and garlic in with the hamburger, stir that **** up. If you threw the bell peppers in, you ****ed up fish them outta there.
Drain and rinse your fart berries. there are two ways you can do the next part. If you are not in a hurry, chuck the beans back in the pot, and proceed to open your 5 cans dump them all in with the beans and turn burner on to about a medium low. If you are in a hurry, put the beans back in the pot cover them in fresh water and boil the farts out of them for about an hour, then drain them and add your tomato ingredients and bell peppers turn burner to med. low.
At this point your hamburger should be browned and your onion, peppers garlic should look wilty. Throw that stuff in with your beans. DO NOT DRAIN HAMBURGER! THERE IS GOOD STUFF IN THERE OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?
Add water, wait for the entire pot to come to a slow boil. Wash dishes, watch a movie, read a book, listen to a podcast, whatever you do.
Seasoning:
I am not going to go to much into seasoning, because everyone has different tastes. I'll tell you right now your chili has a lot of flavor and a bit of kick to it. Go ahead, try it. I'll wait. (Do dee do dee do dee doo doo....) Was I right? mmmhmm. course I was. It tastes a little acidy right? It's from the tomato sauce. I cut that with some sugar, not a lot I start with a table spoon and stir it up, wait for about 15 minutes and try again if it is still too acidy I repeat the process about 1/2 teaspoon at a time until it is not too sweet, but not too bitter.(Acidy) What type of sugar should I use? Whatever you like raw, white, brown, dark brown, honey, whatever it's all good just do not over do it.
Chili powder, I use maybe 1 teaspoon, again its a taste thing.
Salt I use about 1 teaspoon and repeat the sugar process.
Pepper. same as as salt. I use ground white pepper, but go ahead and use whatever you like.
Let that big old fragrant pot of semi liquid gold simmer for about 3 hours, or until the beans are soft enough to chew. They will be harder than canned kidney beans, but they are so much better. The longer it sits, the better it will taste. Actually your chili will taste better after having sat in the refrigerator for a day.
Enjoy!

Tuna Pasta bake
All measurements are very approximate, 5-10g either way will be fine!!
Put on a pan of pasta, you want it slightly soft but not cooked totally. Whilst it is cooking....... In a mixing bowl..........
Crunch up 125g of digestive biscuits, crackers or whatever yuo have in the house (we use cheesy crackers), add 125g of grated cheese (again whatever you have, hard cheese preferably!) and mix, add one chopped onion and mix, add either one big tin tuna or three little tins tuna and mix, add three eggs and mix, slowly add some milk until the mixture is gooey but not too wet, add the cooked pasta and mix once more, if you want to you can add any herbs/spice/garlic/chillies at this point and mix well, sometimes i do sometimes i dont.
Once all mixed grease a lasagne dish and pour the mixture in, level it off and if you want add some grated cheese on top. Bake on Gas Mark 4 for about 45 mins or until the top is slightly crispy (i like the top almost burnt and crispy but thats just me!!). Serve and enjoy, i like to smother in salad cream or mayonaise but wifey and daughter have it "dry"
I have so many recipes! I'll go through them later, list the recipes I have, and post the actual contents according to demands :)
P.S. I think I'll try that clam chowder recipe tomorrow or next week :)

Here is a great and different way to eat shrimp:
Firecracker Shrimp
Won-ton skins
Jumbo shrimp
bacon
Samble Olek
fresh basil
egg wash
Take and cook the bacon, but not all the way through. Take the won-ton skins and lay them out. Take your eggs, about two, and whisk them real good. Take a brush and brush the top part of the wontonskin. Put a piece of basil, then top with samble, a piece of bacon(not too long to stick out the sides), then the shrimp that has been peeled. Roll it in the won-ton skin. I double roll mine. I'll lay out another won-ton skin and after the initial roll, roll it again in the other one.
To cook, get a pan and put some oil in it. If you have a deep fryer that would be better. Deep fry for about 2 minutes. In pan, get the oil hot and place the shrimp in. Turn once. Won-ton skin should be golden brown either way. Finish in an oven that has been preheated at 350. Cook all the way through.
A sweet chili sauce bought from the Asian sauces area in the super market is great with this to dip in.

Ahhh sorry
I like to dedicate this recipe to my Grandmother. Kind of fitting since it is hers.
German Potato Salad
Serves 4
You'll need:
2 1/2 lbs Red potatoes
1/2 lb chopped/cubed bacon
1/2 white onion diced
Celery Salt
1 Tbsp Flour
1 Cup White Vinegar
1 Cup Sugar
Boil whole potatoes in their skins in salted water for about 30 minutes. Rinse in cold water. Drain and peel
In a casserole dish put a layer of thinly sliced potatoes and some celery salt over potatoes. Continue layering potatoes and celery salt until all the potatoes are used.
Cook 1/2 lb of chopped/cubed bacon until done. Drain bacon on paper towels. Set aside.
To the bacon grease, add 1 Tbsp flour stirring constantly for a few minutes to make a roux.
Combine the white vinegar and sugar. Add to the bacon grease roux. Whisk to combine. Add diced onions and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Add a little water if the sauce becomes to thick.
Pour sauce over potatoes.
Sprinkle cubed/chopped bacon over the potatoes. This dish can be served hot or cold.

While it's still fresh on my mind, we went to the Country Buffet restaurant today for lunch, and I was really disappointed.
The seasoning seemed off on everything there.
Pretty sad shelling out $40 for lunch and the chocolate milk was the only thing I enjoyed.
Not to burst your bubble, but you did go to the Country Buffet. It's kind of expected at places like that. I remember when Sizzler made everyone sick because of cross contamination with cantaloupe.

I don't have a recipe to offer yet, but I was wondering if anybody had a chocolate lava cake recipe, where you make these little chocolate cakes in ramekins and the centre is all gooey chocolate. I had a book with this recipe but I can't find it here, mum can't find it at home or at the cottage, i tried a recipe from the internet and it was hooooorrrible!

carrots with a dash of brown sugar, heavy butter.
Bacon - The most epic meat ever. good on everything. (almost)
Get a packet of real bacon bits in the salad dressing section of the market, scramble it into eggs and wrap in a soft tortilla with some cheese. (chopped jalapeño makes it even better.)
