Here is another impulse buy, again we were in the shop when he was deliverd and we bought him on the spot. He is a Kayaumi Super Dwarf Retic, extremely docile and loves to come out of his vev whenever he can. Only bit me once but i should know better than open the feeding box on a retic in feed mode!

In theshop when we first met

Wow, Rob! He's such a beauty! Makes me want to buy one!! (Dwarf or Super-Dwarf only, but still! Beautiful snakes!)

I bet they get comfortable pretty quick! That's the one thing about Corns and other smaller snakes...while I think Vermicelli's all settled in and comfortable with ME, I think he goes into fight or flight with new people smells still, cuz he's so tiny :/

Learnt very quick that you dont disturb a retic in feeding mode - literally lifted the feeding box lid half an inch and he struck from two foot away through the half inch gap and got me!

Great job, Whenever i reach into my feeding box to pull a snake out I mist the inside before I reach in. Never had a snake try to bite when I did this.

Lankyrob
04-04-11, 12:26 PM
Never had the chance to reach in - he tagged me before i even lifted the lid right off! Never struck at me since tho - its the proof to me that in 99% of situations bites only occur when it is the humans fault.

SD retics are amazing, if they came in the morphs I liked I might buy one. :(
One day there will be an Anthrax SD or a Golden child SD

Grats on the new snake.

He shed last night - every shed so far has been in pieces, the first one was terrible, next one slightly better but still bits. This one is the fifth shed since we have had him and it was ALL ONE PIECE!!! There were a couple of rips in it and it was rolled in on itself but managed to get it pretty much straight and the shed measured 6ft2in which allowing for 10% stretching places him at about 5ft10in. Will try to get pics later today or tomorrow - like to let them rest after shedding before handling them.

how did you come up with that number?

The pictures were there they just took longer to load for some reason, it was probably on my end.

I tried to explain it to the kid, he used a few words i hope never to hear again, then used age appropriate profanities and started yelling about me trying to mislead him =/

probably due to the fact that most people around here do not re-size their photos before uploading. not only do the larger photos take longer to load, but they get scaled down anyhow.

Ummmm - i kinda like my blood still in its veins rather than all over me and the floor! Even this morning taking the plate out again 12 hours after he fed is a risky prospect. I open one end of the viv and distract him whilst wifey opens other end and grabs the plate!

Maby take a drill and drill a hole in the plate, then put a hook at the end of a stick? The bigger he gets the more potential danger there will be.

07-05-11, 12:50 PM
If he gets worse then we will leave the plate in an extra day or tie a piece of string to it - most times the following day he isnt too bad.

retics are really smart so every time he sees that plate he knows its dinner time i would do away with it and get bigger tongs

Lankyrob
07-05-11, 12:54 PM
The plate serves two purposes, 1) to "switch him on" and 2) to stop ingestion of substrate.

To be honest i have probably made it sound worse than it is - this feeding was pretty hairy but usually it isn't that bad.

Perhaps you may want to change the wording in that statement over to "Retics are addictive" Or better yet "Snakes are like potato chips, you can't have just one"

Not sure what a normal is, but you can get a het snow for about 600$ off harry wessles, get a pair and in a few years you can be making some money.

millertime89
10-20-11, 02:18 PM
Travis Kubes has normals listed at 400, but I know if you talk to him you can get them for less. He's got SD tigers listed at 600, but once again, talk with him, and he'll hook you up. I damn near walked out of the last expo with a pair of SD tigers for one hell of a price, but I didn't have anywhere to house them.

Well he left me a lovely one piece shed last night and (YES i know sheds are a reliable measure of the snake) it was just over 7ft!

Got him out tonight and snapped a couple of quick pics and also did a rough measure of him against my body - i would estimate he is 6ft 5in to 6ft 10in in length.

Lankyrob
11-25-11, 02:55 PM
Never had him "officially" sexed as with all my snakes as they are pets and not for breeding. He was sold to the shop by a breeder as a male - the assumption being that he was sexed by the breeder before selling him on. The reptile shop have offered to sex any of my reptiles at any point for free but i really am not that bothered either way.

Right now, I won't be able to get one. I was going to research some more and go ahead and build it's enclosure. We're limited on space and money right now. I am able to support the two snakes I have but another would be pushing it right now. But once I get another place, I'll be willing to pay up to 650 dollars. That much I'll have to save up for though. That'll be another year or two though, but I can always look at what's available and make my plans around that. :)

millertime89
11-26-11, 05:26 PM

Whats the different and how big do they get!?
And the price range? lol

youngster
12-11-11, 05:57 PM
They are just different localities that get different sizes.
The ones that live on a small island with fewer predators tend to get bigger because there's less competition. SDs get like 8 feet max I think and I'm not sure about dwarfs.

millertime89
12-12-11, 01:15 AM
Like Eli said, dwarfs and SDs are typically just island locals. Dwarfs range from the not so dwarf Jampeas that have been known to hit 18 ft to the tiny Kayuadis (superdwarfs) that generally top out at 8 feet for females and 6 for males. Some people have powerfed them to 12 feet, but others have powerfed and haven't topped 8. Dwarfs generally hit 14/10 though. The 18 ft Jamps were powerfed to find their potential.
A normal price for a superdwarf can be as low as 100 (I paid 150 for a unique normal) and are generally listed at 400 for normals.
Just because a retic is from a different locality doesn't mean its a dwarf, sulawesi retics generally grow bigger than mainlands (normals, wildtypes, etc.).

the less competition part is offset by a smaller food base, its kind of hit and miss like I said about the Sulas in comparison to the Kayuadis.

Gorgeous snake. I've been wanting a SD for a while. I love his pattern too. A lot of the SD retics I've seen in pictures are usually darker with a pattern that doesn't stand out as much. I can't blame you for buying it on the spot. I would ask you where you got him, but we're on different continents so it wouldn't help me much in my search :(

They tend to brighten up and go green (lol) as they age. NERD is in your area, why not check them out? I'm pretty sure Andy has a few SDs breeding.

He's very beautiful, I can't wait to get my own. Depending on future situations, I may get an SD. If the needs can be met, I'll get a normal. Either way it's going to wait a few years. Keep those pics coming! >:O lol
