This was my lovely female Surinam BCC, about 7 or 8 years old, prob a touch under 10ft, well i am 6ft1 and have over an 8ft reach!!

She died a couple of weeks ago, from what i thought was an infection, she was peeing huge amounts and a lot of the urates was green!!!

I had a thought in the shower yesterday, as you do, and it occured to me that as the lab tests didnt show any abnormal growths, that it had to be something else.
Then it struck me, copper oxide is green, and the penny dropped, the rabbit she had eaten a while ago was shot, likely with a copper jacketed round!!
I was careful when checking rabbits, i only used ones that had an exit wound, infact of the 10 i bought, i binned 3 because of that.

The hard lesson is, she was the nicest snake i had had, even at 10ft she was softer and gentler than nearly every other snake i own, and i am not only gutted to lose her, but really annoyed with myself for not realising earlier, and not using the rabbits!
Needless to say, i wont be doing it again!!

I hope maybe, if people are wondering about using shot animals, they may think twice, it really isnt worth it!!

Heartfelt condolences mate. That sucks.

Other things to consider about shooting prey for snakes.

Nearly all single bullet rounds will fragment somewhat while "mushrooming" leaving bits of lead behind.

Shotgun pellets will carry gunpowder residue with them to the target, those plastic waddings do a good job of scraping the inside of the barrel out (residues)

again, so sorry for the loss.

Yes, it takes a big person to "suck it up" and share what not to do. KUDOS for that.

:( Sorry to hear about your snake friend. I hope someone reads this and learns a lesson the easy way from your hardship.
