its raytek i use and they are great guns

i have the raytek ranger ST80 ProPlus

i picked it up on e bay second hand for £55 ($75) including postage

Fluke are another great make of temp gun's as they bought over raytek and i'm sure thay all come under Fluke now

medical grade temp guns have a use by date on them over here you can pick one up thats deemed unfit for medical use but are still accurate and function 100% correctly for a reasonable price

a good temperature gun is a great investment for any reptile keeper imo

cheers shaun

I also got mine at a reptile show for under $50. I picked it up from Greg West of Cornelsworld (http://www.cornelsworld.com/tempguns.htm) (he also sells them online).

Also, I just checked out their websites and found this one at Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=912247&Ntt=912247&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber) and this one at Canadian Tire (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/MeasuringTools/SpecialtyMeasuring/PRD~0574554P/Mastercraft%252BDigital%252BTemperature%252BReader/CROSSSELL~0851353%20Instant%2BRead%2BDigital%2BPen %2BThermometer.jsp?locale=en) for around $60-$100, not sure if they're available in store though. And, I have seen cheaper, smaller 'pens' but not sure on their quality.

Yeah I got that one from Canadian Tire when it was 75% off and it works great, it big though but works great when I checked it against my digital thermometer.
I would wait and get the one at the reptile expo! I'm not sure if Exclusive Snakes has a store or if its only on line shopping but you can always e-mail them.

Double check the instructions and range limitations, then use it on yourself - if it reads you as the walking dead, I'd exchange it.

Sounds more likely on the Celsius then the Fahrenheit.

There can't be anything in the way, like you can't get a temperature through the glass, it's the first thing that the beam hits. Some have a distance that is recommended for an accurate reading also.
What brand is it?

I was just reading the operating instructions, sound complicated to me. I would bring it back.
You can make it simple for now and just get a digital thermometer with a probe at your local pet store, and place the probe on the basking spot in the hot hide. Order a thermostat, if the pet store doesn't have one ask if they will order one for you. You can plug your under the tank heat pad into the thermostat and use the digital thermometer to set the thermostat to the desired temperature and not have to worry about temps again! The digital thermometer can then be used on the cool side to measure the cool side. The Repti-temp 500r you can use two sources at the same time, either a heat pad or a ceramic heater.
Give Exclusive snakes a call or email and see if they have a store that you can purchase these and if they only sell on line then you can always just order over the phone if you feel more comfortable.
I used to be the same way, with my credit card and ordering on-line, but I didn't have a choice once and used Pay Pal and they were awesome. They are like a middle man between the company and you.
