So i have had my roach colony going for about a month and every now and then found the odd escapee but not found out where they have escaped from, decided it must have been me moving bits around when cleaning out old food etc.

This morning i found twenty under a newspaper on my kitchen table! HAd been thinking about miving them to a plastic box that had more floor space rather than height anyway so had to do it straight away. During the move i found that A) they are breeding like cockraoches!! My thirty that i bought is probably close to 100 already!! and B) the cage i was using is an old exo terra cage with a mesh top, it had previsouly been cracked and repaired with silicon. The roaches were climbing the silicon to the mesh cage and then had forced their way out through the edge of the mesh!! I KNOW for certainty that the mesh was fixed when the roaches went in so they must have broken out and bent the mesh to get through!!

All safe and secure now and wont be long before there are enough for feeding to our lizards!!

Thankfully, dubia will not thrive free in the house.

Get a brand new poly tub, they are cheap enough, and my roaches have never climbed out ;)

Some people use poly trash bins, they are so tall that climbing out is impossible.

They used to "bug" me too :) but in time you get used to them. Out of all the roach species in the world, only 2% of them are house pests.

Some trivia you may not want to know.

Shrimp, Lobster and crab are all Arthropods, the group includes insects & spiders.

So the next time you are at red lobster shelling out $50 a plate, you are eating big expensive bugs ;)

I will try to get some pics of the big males now that they are settled - they look very different to the ones i remember you posting wayne - be interested in your opinion once i get some pics.

I prefer to handle the females then the males, but sometimes there are just too many male, so I try to feed them 1st.

So does that mean roaches taste like lobster? If so anyone got some butter sauce? lol

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought you had won the lottery Rob! I was excited for you.

Your roaches it seems were planning a sneak attack. Just as you and the family sat down for dinner they would have made their move and stole all of your food. Sneaky buggers. I wouldn't trust them for a minute. :suspicious:

If my wife were to find any roaches on our dining table,me and the roaches would be out in the cold......

.. EWG WAYNE. Whyyyyy?! Why did you have to say that?! I looooove shrimp, lobster and crab and I HATE bugs D: -cries- Dx

Now I feel a little grossed out that I've been eating bug guts this whole time :c ... but they're so tasty <3 .. So, I'm with Marvel, what do roaches taste like then? 'cause if they taste anything like the three above, I'm probably gonna be chowin' on some roaches.

Cooked crickets taste like popcorn, by the way... I personally love to eat cooked mealworms, though. Crickets are a little too dry when cooked... Then again, I don't want them to be soggy and crap. Not unless their bodily juices are flavored with butter, soy sauce, or some other sauce that's tasty.

I'd be willing to bet that roaches would be alright in Alfredo sauce over linguine.

Mankind had been masking the flavour of stuff forever, Chili was invented to make meats that were otherwise impossible to eat taste better. Add enough spices and fillet of rat becomes a meal that people would eat, right up until you told them what it was.

When I went to Brasil, I asked my friend Roberto not to tell me what I was eating until afterward, I didn't want to be biased before trying new things.

I cannot even pronounce some of what we ate, But if it was good enough for the family dinner, I figured I'd eat it too.

.. Yanno.. The alfredo sauce doesn't sound half bad... I should try this one day. Cook up some roaches with alfredo sauce.. maybe toss in some pasta and chopped broccoli... Yeaaaah.. That sounds really nice. I think I'd barely notice the roaches then.

Wonder if I've ever had some form of odd meat without ever knowing it. I know I've had ostrich, kangaroo, alligator, venison, pheasant, antelope, maybe squirrel... and the usual, chicken, cow, pig, and sheep... Gotta say, Sheepies are one of my favs <3 Then Kangaroo, Venison, and Ostrich.

Edit: I'd, ofcourse, want the roaches de-legged though...

I am one ofr trying "anyhting" but still not sure about insects. HAve eaten -cow, sheep, goat, horse, alligator, shark, fish, frog, chicken, turkey, ostrich, buffalo, rabbit, deer.

Would probably say shark buffalo and ostrich are my favourites out of the list.

Wayne, tried to get some pics of my strange males but they are too damn quick! Could you repost the pics you showed me all those months ago of the males? Maybe i am remembering them wrong.........

Those look just like my males Rob.

Our little gecko ate 4 medium size Juvies (they all look alike until maturity) last night.

It was neat, just a few minutes after he ate them, he sat right on top of where the heat pad is, and closed his eyes.

Those two are the only mature males in there so far so they are safe for now ;), i reckon when the next lot mature should have more than enough to start the feeding - quite looking forward to seeing our guys tackle them.

Thanks for the reassurance wayne - my memory isnt the greatest but my two didnt look like my memory of the one you posted.

I have way too many males, wish I had more females, my dragon prefers the females but I try to get rid of the males because you don't need a lot of males to breed 1:3 ration of males to females.

Thats the pic wayne - in my head the male looked just like the female but with wings - damn those drugs!

... How'd you know I missed goat? 'Cause you're absolutely right. I DID miss goat.

So, to add to my list, goat. And no, I'm not just saying that, I've had Indian Goat Curry before.~ Very tasty <3 Never tried Goat Kabobs, though.

To add, I dunno... The males look kinda bleh.. Look TOO much like a roach, if that makes any sense. I think if I were to ever eat a roach, it'd be the female roaches.

I spent a week in a small fishing village called Ubatuba (http://gobrazil.about.com/od/braziliancities/p/ubatuba.htm) and the boardwalk vendors had all sorts of unusual foods, I found most all of it really tasty.

I'm sure. I'm also sure all of us say such things whenever we go to vacation! I know me and my parents always say we'd loooove to stay in Clearwater, Florida when we make our yearly trip down there. We've wanted to visit Cancun for a while, but I don't think we will considering the animals.

I remember the roaches down there were as big as the Dubia I have.

What's really cool is the locals there allow geckos to roam free in their houses because the geckos are very effective at keeping the roach population inside homes under control.

We mopped the floor with bleach every morning because of the roaches, and since their idea of windows is an open hole (with jail like steel bars to keep people out) with wooden shutters, keeping the bugs out is not much of an option.

Ohhh... I don't think I'd like that. I'd feel very unsafe in said housing :c ... I'd like the gecko part <3 .. but not exposure to bugs at any given time.

Eh well... As I've stated quite a bit, I -do- have a gnat problem.. It's slowly dying, though, now that I've removed all sources of food and water. I seldomly see spiders and other bugs in my room. I've caught a German Roach in the pantry once and a spider here or there... There's probably tons of creepy crawlies in the garage, though.

We used to have a mouse/rat/squirrel problem.. but this was because we discovered there was a hole in the side of our home(which also attributed to high air conditioning bills). We had our family repair man over and he was doing something in my mother's room.. lifted up the carpeting and bam, he saw outside.. So, we've had this hole in the side of our home for who knows how long. Turned out it was rotted wood and the beam supporting the second floor was, pretty much, completely rotted. So, you're probably wondering why we didn't get killed on account of the second floor collapsing(because both my room and my parents' room is on the second floor). Turns out, the only thing that was saving our second floor from collapsing was the fireplace. The fireplace had actually sunk into the flooring a few inches on account of this. So, our family repair guy, Eddy, fixed it all up for us, even cranked the fireplace back up to where it should be.~

They creep me out and like to feed on my blooood :c ... and then it itches.

I'd suspect spiders, and others bugs, don't enjoy my room too well since I always have it lit up like the sun, and only -slightly- dimmed at night. Always have 1 - 3 lights on, though.

I share my house er apartment with little Texas house geckos they are everywhere and don't argue when they come in my house. Geckos favorite treat are roaches and living in an apartment this keep an "homies" from deciding they like it here!! plus its really neat sitting on my coach watching tv and a cute little gecko hunt on the floor lol
