So long story short we had an oops with our corns about a month ago and about a week ago what I thought was the male shed and then about 3 hours ago the fiance found 20 suprises in a moist hide.

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/Shmoges/IMG_0003.jpg
We decided we wanted to get the eggs into an incubator right away and not spend probably as much for materials making one.

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/Shmoges/IMG_0002.jpg
Anyone need vermiculite??? Jesus H Christ! It must be a 20lbs. bag but its all they had at home depot then we get home and the reptibator says you can use perlite and of course they had small bags of that, too late now :P

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/Shmoges/IMG_0008.jpg
I didn't get bit but she really didn't want to let go of them. the 4 out of the pile were like that so mabye they are bad?

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/Shmoges/IMG_0013.jpg
We put the 4 loose eggs to one side in case they are bad and as you can see laid them about 1/3 to 1/2 into the verm, also we hydrated it a bit less than 4 to 3 because we could squeeze out water still.

Funny sticker

http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/Shmoges/IMG_0020-1.jpg
I put analog gauges inside as backups, we have the temp set at 80 and the humid is at 89. Our first "unexpected" clutch male bloodred motley, female anery. We will most likely craigs list, pet store, or herp club the babies. that is if they make it.

Suggestions appreciated

Be sure to let us know how that incubator works!!!

Also, if the mom is looking for eggs then clean out the cage entirely. Wipe everything down with a bleach solution or what I do, water/vinegar solution. She won't eat unless she thinks there's no babies.

Same here ;c I'd loooove to get a ball python at this next expo, but I can't take in anything else of that size until I move out, get my own place, instead of living in this one room with half my creatures LOL

This hognose is going to be the absolute last thing I get. I know that if I got anything else after it, I'd be lucky to fit all my critters in my car when I make the hour and a half drive to Cincinnati, Ohio. Gonna have to pull down the back seat so I'll have this larrrrge space in the back to get my 4 tanks, 1 medium dog crate, 6 cat carriers, and my pitbull to fit LOL. My pitty has a huge bar crate, but that'd take up the entire back space. It's better to just fold it up and toss it in the moving truck, she's well behaved anyways. Same thing will go for my Golden Malaysian Gecko. She's kept in a tall 100g enclosure. Will have to keep her in a small container for the trip and throw her enclosure in the moving truck as well. My car has a little shelf in the front so I can just set her there and all will be fine. Definitely hoping to expand once I've moved out and settled, though!

Also thinking about breeding geckos or snakes later on. How much did that incubator cost and is it good for any reptile? If it is I'll be sure to keep it in memory/bookmarked for future purposes.

Update. The mom ate about 5 hours after removing the eggs and the next day we found a very stinky regurge :P I'm thinking stress from the birth and offering food to soon? I have been told that I may want to wait a week from the regurge before offering again. She is not searching for eggs at all now, just hanging out in her hide by the heater. I'm not touching her or anything till next feed so hopefully she will destress some.

Well its been over 2 months now and we put a light to the eggs tonight to see if we could see anything. There seems to be shadowing from something wrapped around in the lower half of the eggs. All 19 still have veining and look red or pink with a light on them so I assume they are good an no mold either. I have seen other peoples eggs and they have dimples on them but ours are plump like fat grapes, well large olives is more like it. We have kept them in a constant 80 degrees with 78+ humidity, the temp guage on teh incubator has gotten to 85 a few times recently with the summer heating things up but I assume things are still ok.

the zoo med incubator has received bad reviews because of its inconsistency. also, you really don't want to pull apart the eggs. you risk tearing them, plus you want the keep the eggs in the same direction as you found them. if you pull them apart, you could disrupt that position. hopefully they will all hatch and everyone will be healthy.

I was very careful to not put any in the wrong way that would disturb the bubble and ruin the egg. Separating the eggs as I have read has advantages and disadvantages and if your careful... you wont tear them. I watched a lot of videos before I tried it and it wasn't bad at all. I don't like the idea of having a clump of eggs and the one at the bottom in the middle goes bad and rots or molds and good eggs around it could be lost because of it. This is our first egg clutch and I'm sure we have made mistakes and have learned a lot as well. I have payed attention to the mechanical temp and humidity gauges I put in the incubator and they have reflected the same readings for over 2 months so I guess I got a good one or it hasn't failed yet... For the money and the oh crap we need a incubator asap it can't be beat IMO.

Now that they are starting to hatch you can cut the eggs, especially since they are overdue as it is. Generally we wait till 30% hatches and cut the rest because some are born without the egg tooth (make sure to only slit the egg because some will remain in the egg for a long time (one of our clutches hatched at 71 days, and one of the snakes didn't come out till the 83rd day))

Ok, they are all cut. I started it just enough to get a blunt end forceps in there then tried to cut it further with a razor. God I got worried when I would see a little blood from a shell vein. One looks like its upside down in the egg but they all look developed.

Just give them time and make sure flys cant get in.

Best way to slit an egg is to pinch it slightly, and cut within the pinch

Well we have 6 aneries, 5 normals, 6 still pipping, one DOA (wrapped up in its umbilical), and one escape artist normal. We have since separated aneries from normals and put them in two bins in one of our racks. These tubs we bought have a fatal flaw in teh lid that lets the snakes out :P they would be great for a custom rack themselves or just storage for now :P

Seriously this one little worm got out and is MIA big time in like 2 hours.

Its been busy lately, sorry it took me so long to post some more pics. So being that the father was motley and the mother was anery with amel siblings. Would that mean that since half are anery and half are normal that both parents are het for anery? Then doesn that mean that the babies are 100% het anery 50% het motley? Or are they actually 100% het albino due to the mothers siblings?

Okay. Since mom is Anery, she has two recessive genes (Homozygous for Anery); all of the normals are het for anery. The fact that you got Anery's at all means Dad is het Anery. IF one of momma's parents was Amel, then she would be het Amel, meaning that there would be a 50% chance that any one of your babies would be het Amel. It could be higher if Dad has any Amel in his ancestry, but it's at least 50% (Although the fact that you got no snows or Amels says Dad is probably homozygous for Normal at the Amel "locus").

As for the patterning, it sorta depends. The Motley locus has three possible genes that could be there: Normal, Motley, or Stripe. If Dad's pure Motley, then the babies are 100% het Motley. If he's a Motley/Stripe (which shows typically as motley with a bit of striping between back spots) then babies are 50/50 het Motley or Stripe, but every one of them is het for one of those two.

I seem to recall that Dad was bloodred as well, if that is the case then the babies are all het bloodred too.

Check out http://iansvivarium.com/cornsnakemorphs.php, it's a GREAT resource for figuring out how cornsnake genetics work :)

Shmoges
05-15-11, 09:57 AM
Well The more I look at him I think he isn't bloodred but just motley and happens to be red?? you be the judge :D

Well, he certainly looks "bloodred". Another name for that morph is "diffused", and it's characterized by a "washed-out" pattern, with some belly color coming up onto the side of the snake. He looks an awful lot like the adult picture of a diffused motley shown here: http://iansvivarium.com/morphguide/diffused/

In any case, even if he's not diffused/bloodred, bunches of beautiful babies that are just BRIMMING with potentially great genetics :)

Shmoges
05-15-11, 10:30 AM
It said on that site that diffused removes checkers on the belly. I thought that motley did that? His belly is white and about halfway down his body it starts to become more and more red with no black. Can he be motley diffused bloodred het anery?? Jesus thats a lot of stuff going on.

Motley/Stripe and Diffused ALL remove belly checkers. Based on how your guy looks, I would say he is Motley Diffused het Anery. If you prefer the way Bloodred sounds, you can use that instead of Diffused, they are interchangeable :)

Bloodred is just a selectively bred version of Diffused, where the pattern is almost completely invisible, resulting in a pure red snake.

Dehlida

It's hard to see from those pictures, but if you look closely the lateral striping is in evidence, as is the thicker dorsal stripe with well-formed spots of light color...definitely a motley in my opinion. Better pic here:

I honestly don't care what I "could" get for them or what they sell them for, thats their business once the exchange is made and I hope they sell well for them. It was never about money from the start. It was an amazing experience that I am eager to enjoy again responsibly. I think I came out ahead as in the incubator cost like $100 and I almost doubled that so I am happy. All I can hope for is that they enrich peoples lives and are cared for well.

In a year or two I have a lot of options for breading but I don't intend to get everything pregnant at once or even within the same year. Live birth will be icky....
