Nice bite, your wife will wear that one with pride. I will sohw pics of my yearling girls bite on me a while ago again. We need to get Kim to post pics of her scrub bite aswell.
Shauns right they are deffinetely heat seaking missiles with teeth and the sheer speed and distance in a strike the adults can get is just insane ( no room to hide or take cover when in an enclosure with adults ).
Im waiting to get nailed by a big beast of a scrub around 5m, i reckon that would be one hell of a wound considering the size their teeth!

Yeah i know. Been working on it a little. Just bought some free standing shelving for putting 106 quart tubs on. Which is set up next to my Boaphile cages for now. My youngest boy is going to be going into a home for kids with special needs here in the next month or so. So i been spending as much time with him as i can before he goes. So it kind of put it on hold till he leaves.

Yeah! It's called the Hope School best one in our state. He's nonverbal and they have a really good turn around rate on teach kids like him to talk and how to do things for themselves. Plus having him living there they can work on finding the right Medicine combo for him. It also a safety issue. Most of the window in my house have been replace with temper glass, because he like to throw thing when having a melt down.

A few years ago he put his hand threw the garage window and nick the small artery and severed 8 tendon in his left hand. He had reconstructive surgery. So now he only has 80% use in that hand. Plus when he was getting feeling back in his hand he chewed the finger tip off his pinky. He's nowhere as bad as he use to be, but still a danger to himself. Mentally he around two years old. Physically there's nothing wrong with him and he strong as a ox. He as actually knock my wife out before. Not on purpose he doesn't know any better. Most of the time he a lovable sweetheart, but we he as a bad day so doesn't everybody else. As much as we hate to do it it's what best for him. Hopefully when he old he'll be able to move back home.

Anyway i'll be sure to get tons of pics up when i get my snakes. Plus i am sure i'll get some nice bites two. The female sounds like a demon not sure yet about the male. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

It sounds as if your son is in a bite club all of his own with that garage window injury, so don't worry about the "hijack." Not only that, but our families are a huge part of our lives (whether they like our scaly babies or not) so it's good to hear about them. Hope School sounds like a wonderful place. Will you be able to visit him regularly there or is it too far away?
Anyway, keep us posted on your son and your bites--love these pictures. I am waiting for my first bite, although I don't know how drastic it will be with a lone little ksb!

I must be lucky i only been bit twice in the last 13 years. Both were feeding response. Been keeping snakes going on 18 years. I've learn how to read them pretty good i guess. When i first got into snakes i get bit at least once a month. Had both the Jags out the other day and the female gave me one strike and that was it. The scariest is when they go for your face. Had a baby Retic get my nose twice and a baby RTB nip my lip.

I got nailed again today.. in front of a house guest.

I already knew it was going to happen before it did, I said "hey Paul, you're just in time to watch me reach into the shark tank"

This group of garters have a very strong feeding response, and as soon as I open up the top of the cage, they start swirling around with mouths wide open.

I will try and film a feeding sometime, it's comical.

I really don't know why that particular group acts like that, and the others don't.

The one snow has been named "Jaws" because the second he thinks there's food to be had, he just hangs his mouth open and starts striking at the air.

If that boy could drool, he'd be slobbering all over the place.

I have found that the best way to do this without getting bit is to tong feed each one a pinkie first, and then take them out while they are still busy eating it, Then transfer them to the feeding boxes.

Can't bite with a mouth full of food

They each eat 3-4 pinks per meal... If I just put the food in the cage with them, the fights over who gets to eat would be intense.

.

Sapphyr
02-26-11, 12:55 PM
Wayne you're hilarious~ Jaws sounds like the perfect name, and I think it'd be funny to watch such a scene. It'd be even funnier if he could drool, in my opinion.

We will see if the behaviour continues, I am splitting them up and moving three of them to another tank later today.

The group gets along just fine, but they pollute that cage fast, too many snakes pooping on the same cage floor, I clean it while they are eating, and in two days there is snake poop all over the place.

I had the closest call i ever want to have with one of my venomous species yesterday. Whilst moving one of my mulga snakes to clean his enclosure back in to his freshly clean room he flew out of the tub. I had my gloves on whilst doing this like normal, but the cheeky guy still landed a bite on the glove. I felt a small prick on the back of hand and quickly got him off and back into his home. When i took the glove off i noticed a lot of venom on the back of my hand. Thinking that i could not see blood and was ok ( just shocked ), no there was a tiny pin sized hole on my hand with a speck of blood. I went into the hospital for ovbsevation for the night, but to my surpirse suffered a dry bite lol, you would not of thought it if you had seen the amount of venom running down my hand!

I got a lucky break with this incident and thought i should share it with everyone. As this proves no matter how much caution you take you can still quite easily come unstuck. Im still not sure why he was so angry, this guy is one of my most placid snakes. Also he managed to get a fang through the seam of the glove so i was just unlucky but lucky at the same time!

Cheers for the concern guy's, but luckily i was fully prepared and trained and so was my housemate for this situation. I was a little worried as i have heard of people losing digits to these guys. I was waiting for the nausea and vomiting ( not to mention the pain ) as i was sure he had envenomated me. I was incredibly lucky and needed nothing other than observation at the emergency room. Its a part of venomous snake keeping we all know is there and the risk is ever present. Im just glad i have not had a envonomation in my years of keeping and hope that this continues!
I thought i would share this with you guy's as no one likes to talk of these situations and the true numbers rarely get shared or put to paper. A few friends did come to see but most were not sympathetic about it as they dont like me keeping these species anyway.

PS Dont tell my mum lol i refuse to tell her. Even though im free of her powers lol and plenty old enough, we all know what mothers are like.

I'll give that a shot Chuck, I'll have to have my wife do the shooting. My female is suffering a bad shed atm I'll have to get her out and see what can be done about. The silly girl spends about 90% of her time in her water dish and then right before she sheds she decides to bask for 2 days. She's currently in her humid hide, so I'll check her in the morning to see how she's doing.

Ok, well I got a particularly nasty bite last night. I was feeding the snakes, and my tri-stripe male coastal carpet, Skunk, had bad aim. He was facing hte other way when I dangled the rat into the cage, and he whipped around and struck so fast that he completely bypassed the tongs and hit the side of my hand. I was good and didn't pull away but he fell onto the floor and left a tooth stuck in my hand. I got him his actual meal, put him away and went to clean my hand. Today, if I have to pick anything up, or something brushes against the bite spot, my whole thumb gets all pins-and-needles and numb. :( I'm hoping it heals quickly, but if there's nerve damage it could be months. Anyway, here's some pics of Skunk's hit. The one of my thumb nail has the tooth that I dug out of my hand sitting on the nail.

03-04-11, 10:16 AM
It's driving me nuts today- the swelling has gone down, but using my thumb or bumping the bite area results in electrical shock feelings in my thumb or numbness....it's a nerve in there that is susceptible to compression injuries, so it should recover, but it may take weeks. Ugh....I used 14" or 16" hemostats- the longest ones I could find- to feed all my snakes. He just got a bit overzealous I guess. Bugger!

You sure you don't have a broken tooth embedded in there? That happened to me a couple of weeks ago with a juvie Hondo. My wife had to take tweezers and find the daggone tooth

Will0W783
03-04-11, 03:30 PM
Nope, no more teeth in there. It doesn't feel at all picky, like it would if there were a splinter (tooth) in it..it's just a pins and needles, electricity feeling if I press on the top bite part at all, and it travels down my thumb. It's getting less frequent and milder as the day goes on, so hopefully it goes away soon. I did dig a tooth out a few minutes after the bite- MAN, I felt that one in there...yeesh it was picky and painful!

So for some reason every time someone other than me holds my Yellow Anaconda he freaks out. He will start flipping out and trying to get away or bite.
Last night my 16 year daughter Amber got her first bite. I was holding him and just said "he look like he was going into shed". She ask if she could hold him and i said "yes, but becareful he seem to not like anyone other than me holding him". She slid her hand under him an BAM he nailed her. She just laugh. It the second time he bit, but both time he was in shed. It's just hard to tell until you pick him up that he in shed.

Anyway we snapped a couple pics then clean it up. Then after hold two of the other snake for a bit she text her friends and show them pics bragging about getting bit by a Anaconda. That's my girl.:)

Once i get everything move into the snake room in a couple weeks i was thinking about building something they can climb on while i clean their cages. The bites were nothing, but the little dickhead musk me. He let out what sounded like a fart. There was nothing on my arm, but dam did it stink. Had to scrub my arm down with soap and water three times to get rid of the smell. I am going to have to start hooking him. When i get him out with the hook he does fine. Lol yeah - he hasny bitten for months and suddenly BANG! Will let him off tho since he is going into blue - just a shame it is so hard to tell when he is curled up in his viv. thankfully she always gets him out as his viv is floor level and its easier for her to get him than for me.

He got her 3 times in all easily in under a second.

I just joined the bite club. I fed my BP in his tank, on a plate as I always do. He wolfed it down in 10 mins, and had just finished, when I decided to reach into his tank to remove the plate. Not sure why I decided to do so right after he just fnished eating :S stupid, thoughtless move on my part. so he bit me twice before I even saw him move, iit took me a few seconds to realize what had happened lol. Well at least he reminded to me be more respectful to a snake still in feeding mode!! On another note, when he struck for the rat, it was two feet above him :O he struck as I opened the lid for his tank. I thought it was pretty impressive.

stephanbakir
06-22-11, 09:17 PM
Thats fightbite! who did you punch!!
On a serious note, I've never heard of feeding a BP every 2 days, it should be every 7. Would you take pics of the Bp and his food in a way that we can see them side by side please? It does sound like his food may be WAY too small.

LLinz
06-22-11, 09:20 PM
Lol, yeah I was shocked! I absolutly deserved it though!

I meant to say Every 10 days!! Whoops! Every 2 days would be ridiculous!
Ill try to get a good pic soon, I'd like to know if I need to start feeding medium rats.

stephanbakir
06-22-11, 09:24 PM
Just check the girth of the snake, with most snakes you go with a rat thats just a big wider then the widest point on the snake. With bp's and their teardrop body shape there might be a slightly different rule, but its easy to tell whats too big.

Lankyrob
06-23-11, 05:43 AM
Our BP is taking rats about 1.5 time or slightly less than the thickest part of its body - it is kinda crazy cos the rat is probably 3 or 4 times as wide as the BP's "neck"

Snake tongs would most likely be the best for handling. That way you can keep the pointy end away from your face.

Result of my own stupidity. My ball python thought my hand looked tasty when I was putting paper towel in his tank for him to eat on. He was at the other end, must have creeped over when I wasn't looking. Yes, that is a tooth sticking out of my finger.

Funny thing is, the boyfriend's carpet python got me 10 minutes later. He grabbed my hand instead of the mouse-- we need to get longer feeding tongs. So now I have tooth marks on both hands from two different snakes. I was waiting for our milk snake to take a nibble too. Not having a good night.

Done by a very hungry 4 foot Ball Python.
before i got her she had gone on a 4 month hunger strike so I started feeding her smaller size rats, after a couple successful feedings she became very hungry. double her meals, now soon time to move her back up to small adults ( its what she was eating before i got her.

Rob, I'll try to get some pictures of Archie once I finish getting his stuck shed off. He's old, bony and thin. He's got some chronic nose issues- every time he goes into shed he starts wheezing and gets crusty around his lips. I have to moisten a q-tip and sit with him to work it off. I've had him examined and his saliva cultured and there's no infection- he just gets nasty when he sheds. I thought he was going to pass the last time, but then he got the shed off his face and was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as ever. He's a ton of work but generally a good-natured, curious fellow and very much loved.

So today i go to get my Borneo out and as soon has open the cage she pops her head out. I knew right then she was in feed mood. So my dumb-ss pulls her out and takes her up stairs. Well she nail me in the hand. Then i had to sit there for almost two minutes while she try to work her mouth off of my hand, because her teeth got caught in the back of my hand.

In the second picture the culprit is in the back ground. I held her for another
ten minute before putting her up.

Side note: 1 drop of Listerine inside the mouth will make ANY snake let go instantly (they tend to release and strike again so watch out for that) It doesn't harm, the animal.

It wasn't that she did want to let go she couldn't. She nail me with her mouth wide open. She had to unhinge her jaw to so she could open her mouth farther and work her teeth out of my hand. Then she dug the top teeth in deeper so she could work the bottom ones out of my hand. Then she pull the top right out. The whole time i am sitting completely still so i don't hurt her. What suck was the feeling of her teeth moving around in my hand. It did hurt just felt weird.

Here is a bite from this week from a rosy boa. She is a rescue and every time I handle her she bites me. She normally doesn't strike, instead she comes up to my hand smells me then latches on and constricts my hand. After a while she will let go and then it seems like she is in feeding mode. she continues to smell very closely back and forth and may or may not bit again. She does a lot of "mock" bites where she open up her mouth and acts like she is biting but doesn't sink her teeth in. Very strange behavior, in fact it if my wife holds her she doesn't bite or "mock" bite her at all. She is a rescue so I wonder if this behavior is from a previous male owner that didn't treat her well...or maybe she thinks it is entertaining...not sure.

SnakeyJay
08-30-11, 12:16 PM

Water snakes here are the most bity snakes around. I've been bitten by a 3 footer and it hurt. It wasn't as bad brandonh's bite but yes they are very very aggressive

also i think they are most common snake in my area because of having a major river running right through the city. its nothing to see 3-4 basking in the sun in one spot.

Well, after 7 plus years of owning snakes, it has finally happened, my very first bite, lol. I was reaching in to remove one of my adult male Dodomas to clean his enclosure, and whammo! The little bugger got me on the middle finger:p

gotta admit, it did sting!

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I joined the club today. Not ten minutes after our new jungle carpet took a strike at my wife's hand (while I was cleaning the cage and adding some fake plants I got) and I told her not to put her hand in front of him.

I had bought a digital thermo/hygrometer and I wanted to move my cheap dial one next to it to check how accurate it was. Meanwhile Jerome was checking out the new perch and I just got too close to him. Oops.

I wasn't even sure he bit me until I saw him in the coiled position and then three little spots of blood on my knuckles. there's actually a small bruise on my knuckle too.

I work at a large chemical plant and we have safety drilled into our heads constantly. I really believe 100% of accidents an be avoided an this bite was a great example. One second of carelessness and I got tagged. Lucky for me it wasn't too painful a lesson. Hehehe

Vlad tries to bite me through the cage!
I'm feeding him tomorrow and hopefully after that he won't be as agressive. I'm think he might just be cage defensive but I'm not entirely sure yet. I guess we will have to wait this out till we find out for sure!

I got this:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/SVRogue/Animals/firsttag.jpg

from her Sunday:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/SVRogue/Animals/ChristmasBurm.jpg

All my fault. I was tired from working a 12 hour shift (and not having a day off in over a week). I got sloppy and probably too trusting of her since she's such a sweetheart. She reminded me to not invade her home with my fingers again. It really didn't hurt...felt more like a cat scratch. It probably could have been worse or even from one of my bigger girls, so I'm lucky the mistake was with her. I won't forget again!

We got a new king yesterday. She was already grumpy from traveling and being in such a little bag. She was biting everything that moved when we unbagged her. The quarantine tub I got in anticipation of her being smaller was too small so after a while we moved her to a bigger one. She was just fine with the boyfriend handling her (but she goes after me with mouth wide open...go figure). It's when he tried to put her in that she back tracked up his hand and bit his finger. She didn't wrap or anything and we thought she'd let go. Instead she decided his finger was food and preceded to try to eat it lol. She only got the fingernail part in her mouth before she stopped. But she wouldn't or couldn't let go. I tried spraying her with water and water mixes and she still didn't let go. He eventually managed to work his finger free of her mouth, being careful not to hurt her. She's been fine every since but I think she's a bit attached to him now!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/SVRogue/Animals/KingNom.jpg

It's going to be interesting to watch the relationship between her and the boyfriend. She's definitely piqued his interested with this move. He's not afraid of her and since the bite didn't hurt him or draw blood, he's more than ready to hold her more when she's had a little more time to settle in :D

Wow, I totally missed this. Yeah the Scrubbies were mental. But a lot of fun! It took a good 15 minutes of handling till they Maybe were calm enough to safely handle I was bit on the the tip of my nose once and nailed twice in quick succession in the face. (separate incident. ) As well as my wife and I being on the receiving end of several hand and arm tags. In the end, it was us or them, and I had to give them up.

I had a Burmese mistake my hand for food. Bit and wrapped it took over 15 minutes to get him to release. He was trying he best to squeeze the life out of my arm. He left me with 14 teeth broken off in my hand and temporary nerve damage. My hand look like it was slammed in a car door.

Bella got me good today, my dwarf albino lav retic. slid the cage glass open and she came out and flew across to the side and grabbed my wrist, she let go right away, but her teeth got caught up in my skin and ripped it a bit as she struggled side to side to get them unstuck. she was fine after she realized i was not lunch, and retreated back to her cage. I cleaned myself and the floor up, i took her out, cleaned her cage , and let her explore for 15-20 min before putting he away. :)

not as bad as it looks really, im always on high alert when i open her cage, because she had a crazy feeding responce, but the most docile disposition once she know its not food time. so I. at least was not taken off guard, but shes too fast, she closed the 3 foot gap or so in less than a sec, if that. the cuts are so sharp they bleed alot but heal real fast. she did bruse and swell up the under side of my wrist, can see it a bit here. she is 10.5 feet now so it could have been alot worse, if she didnt realize upon impact i was not food and get off me herself, i really didnt need to do anything,I just held her body with the other hand so she would not fall, other than that she let go and slithered back into her cage asap. my dad was standing their to take a pic of her for you all, so all the blood you see was in about 15 sec, the rest was in the sink, my dad unfortunatly didnt get any of the bite, that would have been sweet LOL ill post pics of her and me after i cleaned up and got her back out of her cage in a sec, on a second thread.

Dwarf retics average 12-13 feet for males, 15-16 feet for females. Super dwarf retics stay 6-8 feet.

A regular retic can and most often will top 18+ feet long in captivity.

a bit less usually for males usually from what I've seen. Anymore there's so much mainland dna mixed in it gets muddled, pure dwarfs usually top out around 12 for males and 16 for females. Mainlands... well they're another story. Males hit 16 and females will be 18-20 without much effort.

bella is 4 years old, so she will not be getting to much longer in length, a few months ago she has started fattening vrs lengthening, her mother was 14 feet, the father was a large 9, if i remeber right. herny piorun had realy good lines of dwarfs and super dwarfs. My guess she will hit the 14 feet in the next 20 years or so like her mother. either way, she is so calm and gentle when not in feed mode, i would have no problem with her gettng larger, but life will be much easier if she stays on the smaller size.

This one was the result of me being careless (placing a thermometer and forgetting that my king snake is not like the rest of my snakes) and the snake being surprisingly hungry and ready to strike.

I swear they are called Bloods because they like to make you bleed.lol

Was cleaning cages and i reached right in and pick Juggernaut up. Normally he huffs and puff at first when i open the cage. but this time he was super mellow. So i am holding him why Shawn cleans his cage. I tell Shawn to hurry up he getting a bit agitated. At which point he turns his head and open his mouth and bites me. Then goes back to just calmly setting there in my hand.

He left a really nice set of teeth marks. You can see both rows of the teeth from the upper jaw.
