It is very cold here where we are (in Texas) and our house is not the warmest right now for various reasons. Is it a problem to leave on my heat lamps (yes lamps I have 2 lamps right now to help with keeping temps up) all night in order to keep it warm in the home my hognose is in? I have a UTH but she usually doesn't go over to that side of her home even when it gets really chilly like right now. Thought you had to have a 12 on/off schedule with the lamps but I also don't want it getting to cold.

So thoughts? Opinions?

How much snow you got there? Here in Ft. Worth we didn't get snow but ice -shivers- And we try to conserve energy and money so our heater doesn't go above 70. Its fine when you are in the back of the house but here in the front (the living room kitchen area) the high ceilings and HUGE back glass door make it impossible to stay warm.

Try getting a red or blue nite time Lite of the same wattage

If I could get out through the ice right now I would, but this is what I have to work with until the roads are a bit more safer and to my liking. So my two lights being on (one 50 watt and another I think 25 watt) all night is my only option...or not having them on.

i leave mine (red heat lamps) on pretty much all the time bc of winter lol. they are timed to shut off during the night for about 4hrs, that way it cool s the tank just enough.

Maybe I can shut mine off for 4 hours...I don't have a timer but I do have my cell phone alarm. Could just turn it off when I go to bed, set an alarm to wake me in 4 hours, turn on the light, and then go back to bed. I have done stuff similar before. Think I will just do that.

And that is okay Damion, I appreciate the help! Probably next pay check will pick up a red light of a higher voltage for at night.

We are getting pounded with snow. Schools closed for two days already.

On topic.

I have several snakes of assorted species that are subjected to light continuously and they are active, eat well and thrive with no visible issues.

In fact the vivs in the living room get subjected to crazy light cycles and the snakes have been here for years doing fine.

Heck one old gal I had exceeded her average life expectancy by almost 2 years, all that while in the living room of a home that has semi nocturnal people living in it (look at the time stamps of some of my posts)

I have observed snakes shutting down (their version of sleep) in broad daylight if they feel secure, also if they need darkness, they will just go into hiding.

Chompers cage "bleeds" light into the reptile room all the time, plus I'm usually in there taking care of one thing or another and doing night feedings to the milks and the royal.

So I cannot foresee any issues with your hoggies leaving the lights on to keep it warm.

You are a night owl like myself Infernalis but I knew that already ^.- AND WHEN WILL THIS WINTER STORM CRUD END!

Back on topic...I am opting to leave the lights off for four hours and just turned them off. So gonna be turning them back on at 5am. Generally gives her a night time of sorts (at this time of night only the TV and my laptop is on) without allowing her home to get to cold. But you can bet until I do go to sleep I will be watching her temps.

Also convinced the hubby to move her and the bookshelf she sits atop into the living room in trade for what he kept most of our movies in. So basically doing a bookshelf switch. And in that cubby it is much much warmer than in the kitchen/dining room where she is now.

None of our snake vivs have lights in them but like Wayne our snakes and lizards are in our living area. I only sleep about 4 hours per night so they are subjected to light of some sort for about 20 hours per day. As for Wayne, the snakes have plenty of places to hide to get some darness but my retic quite often will come OUT of his hide and sleep on top of one of the logs.

You could just take a permanent black marker and color the bulb black. Let it dry then plug it it in to a lamp (not in the snake cage) and let it heat up to make sure there's no odor. A buddy of my has done this before when the night bulb burn out on his lizard cage till he could get a new bulb.

the ceramic ones are the best for heat, no light all heat and they last forever though they do cost a good amount. I jsut bought the smallest one fo rmy KSBs a 60watt for $34.

Damn this cold snowy/icy weather right? If it were warmer at night (at least for me) I wouldn't even need a heat lamp for the night.
