Hey guys for the first time in a long time I felt the wrath of a 4 ft rtb this morning...feeding response bite...was feeding one of my other snakes and made an amateur mistake...someone came to my door and I was distracted and gapped that I didn't wash my hands!!I went to put Rocco (rtb) in his feeding tub and bammm ohhhh he got me good, had my hand fairly constricted, but after about ten minutes he let go, and than as I quickly went to put him back in he got me again..but let go!!! my fault not his!! it's been a while since I got nailed by a boa lil f****er lol:)http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs080.snc6/169078_1801089745561_1189333004_32178601_7638995_n .jpg

Feeding tag mean you get to hang with the big boys.

WOOHOO!
And to answer about the pain involved with a retic bite, it was no worse than being tagged by my corn to be honest. The main difference was that he bit, let go, bit, let go, bit, let go faster than any of my other snakes could even strike. He did this with one lunge and then recoiled into his feed box. Every tooth broke skin and bled quite a lot and with each bite, let go cycle i think i counted fifteen holes. So 45 holes in under a second i would guess. Its also the only bite that has left me with scar tissue, whether this was because of the multiple bites or just the strength i am not sure. Pretty much my whole thumb went purple with bruising by the following day.
Thing is when there is no food around he is SOOOOO mellow and chilled out, never struck, bitten or even held on tight. This morning i walked into the room eith a bowl of thawed rats and he went psycho to the extent that he struck at his ceramic bulb guard, just cos it was giving off a heat signature!!

Were they little white bumps? If so it wasn't scar tissue, but broken off teeth.
I got nail by a 8 and 1/2 foot Burmese. He got my hand index and middle fingers. Left 76 teeth hole, 14 broken teeth in my hand, and temporary nerve damage in my index finger for almost six months i couldn't move it or bend it. Took 3 of use over 15 minutes to get off. Had to run ice cool water over it head for almost 5 minutes before it release.

i got tagged by a 5-6 foot redtail when i had the pleasure of taking him out of the bathtub after feeding!! he ate a rat or 2, then kind of sat in the far end of the tub facing outward so there was no way to reach to pick him up without being in front of his face (wish my friend had a snake hook) so i reached for him and he struck SUPER fast and got me in the right hand. his bottom teeth sunk into the fleshy part of my thumb where it meets the palm, and the top went kind of into the top middle of my hand, and he kind of just chewed for a few seconds. i was more SHOCKED then hurt. i kind of shook him alittle bit and he let go because he realized i was obviously not a meal, then i bled a bit and it left some bruising but no scars. it really wasn't a big deal and totally my fault, i should have gotten a stick to move his body or something so he wasn't facing me.

Thanks for the great post. I think it is sooooo important for snake owners to understand their snakes behavior. 99% of the time when someone gets bit by an animal other than a baby, it's the humans fault. We often forget that our beloved snake pets have very small and primitive brains. They react to stimulus. They don't like us or love us, its when we humanize their behaviors that we get lazy and get hurt. We often forget how well these animal sense of smell is. Your snake is like a blood hound. If it smells food it's little brain goes into feeding mode. I keep hand sanitizer next to every one of my enclosures. I had one guy tell me he got bit on his chin after eating some bar b que meat and had some sauce on his goatee, LOL...
I will hopefully never get to post a picture of a tag on this thread. I like my blood too much. I would also feel bad for the snake! Maybe I'm weird:crazy2:

I feel bad too, in most cases its not their fault, and I find when you get into owning multiple species of snake, or any reptile you are bound to get bit eventually. I have a bearded dragon too "Big Hugo" he's a big boy very docile and the only lizard I own and even he has his off days.

The easiest way I have found to remove a snake (only used it on burms retics and RTBs is mouthwash) just use a drop or 2 and they let go right away (in their mouths)

Nope he told me he fed it a couple days before. Come to find out from his girlfriend that he lied. Not sure why. If i had know at the time i would have feed it that day when i fed mine. The snake was just hungry and with the smell of rat in the air when i try changing his water he nail me.

Leaving information out is one thing, but the fact that he lied about something that was potentially dangerous is absurd
