I've been thinking of getting one. I really like the albino and the 3 rd pic. Well ill say 1st and 3rd because Im not sure that the first is an albino!
How are the temperate? What's the diff. Between them and corn?
i would say kings have more of an attitude. they have appetites to and the biggest difference haha that i think alot of people know is they can kill and eat rattle snakes. and yes the first pic is a lavender albino.
Here's my Cali King! I need to get some more pics of him, but he is SO hyper!

ooo so pretty :-) will it stay that color? what is the upkeep? same as kingsnake? :-)
Yep, they stay that colour. And, if they do have some lighter speckles, which some do, they usually darken as they age. I've been keeping him in a similar setup to my Corns and he seems to be doing quite well. Oh, and I got him up from a breeder from your area, edens.

Eh, my mother was the same way but she got me one. Nature is nature, in my opinion. Was going to happen one way or another, and it probably will for several hundreds of years, if not forever. But, each to their own.

Ohhhh... Well, even if my mother hadn't of gotten me one, I was determined. I was tired of being denied what I'd been waiting for for over half of my life. My plan was to buy a mini freezer to keep frozen mice in, hide it in my closet. Then get a beginning 10g tank and hide it in the closet. Was planning on getting a corn or a BP at best. Then I'd run an electrical outlet extension into the closet to hook up lamps/heatmat, and the freezer.
Moving out? Eh well, my own personal touch woulda been carry out the snake tank last and be all,"Yeah... I had a snake the whole time. LOL"
But that's just me.

Thanks guys
I had heard that milks and kings musk frequently, but I've also talked to quite a few people recently that don't have this issue with theirs. Our little MBK musks every time we take him out of his cage, but stops and settles down after a moment. I had never heard of a Corn musking and I have never had any of my 8 Corns musk, however, I did recently read somewhere of someone that did have a Corn that musked. So that's not really a for sure thing with any of these snakes, but they do all have basically the same, easy care requirements that makes them all good beginner snakes.
As for feeding, my step-mom wasn't too keen either on having mice in the freezer, but we compromised and I kept them in an opaque container. While I advocate feeding f/t, if your mom is more uneasy with live mice feedings happening than you'll want to make sure that if you do get a snake that it is well established on f/t. Another thing to keep in mind is that most rodents used for feeding reptiles, were breed specifically for that purpose and will eventually end up some reptiles belly.

Ohhh, had no clue they were breed specifically for that purpose.~ c: Now I got something good to tell my mother :D
Anywho, I thought snakes eventually stop musking after getting used to being handled, maybe not all, but most. And yes, I've heard of frightened corn snakes musking before.
None of my kings musk or my milks it's mostly wild snakes but my cousins corn hatchling has musket him twice. And as for kings as a beginner snake I wouldn't recommend because they like to bite for some reason when young I would go with a milk or corn for the simple fact that they are less likely to actually bite you
Lankyrob

We rescued a corn that was about 3 years old but never been handled - for the first few months he musked everytime i picked him up but has now settled to the extent that he is one of the snakes that we take to schools.

Do kings bite because I reeally dont wanna get bitten alot.
Well anything can bite... I'm expecting to get bitten one day on behalf of a feeding response. You can get bitten if you don't pick it up from behind. Can be bitten if your cage opens from the top(they feel threatened because hawks approach from above in the wild). Feeling anxious about picking it up because you -fear- being bitten.. the snake will pick up on that and, in turn, feel anxious as well and will be more likely to bite.
If you're going to get a snake, -expect- to be bitten. You can't ever not expect to be. A snake will bite, whether it's just nippy, you've done something wrong, or it's just a little feeding response. And, honestly.. It's not all that bad. It's more of a shocking experience than it is painful... unless you get a big monster of a snake LOL talking burmese pythons and retics.
Not saying that you -will- be bitten for these reasons, but I'm saying it -can- happen for these reasons.. and probably will at some point in your 10 - 15+ year ownership. With that kind of time... it's honestly inevitable that you're going to get bitten -at least- once... except for maybe with hognoses.

kings are known to be unpredictable biters. they get 3-5 ft and if it going to be your only snake i would just get an adult a 40 gallon breeder give it a lil more room. also if i were you id get a corn, milk. unless you can find an adult king that has been handled alot? good luck!

If you have ever been bitten by a cat or a puppy then a snake bite probably will be unnoticed until you see the blood - their teeth are soooo sharp you barely notice.

after i got bit, it felt very irritated and itchy and strange because mr redtail chewed on my hand for a few seconds lol. other then some discomfort, it wasn't bad at all.

So u think i should be leaning towards milks or corns? I love corns and milks but kings are my favorite!
molson101
02-21-11, 10:36 AM
And why an adult king? Id rather it grow up with me!
I was saying an adult cause it seems your really worried about getting bit and baby's aren't used to humans trying to grab at them and you will most likely beable to find a juvi adult that has been handled alot more in it's life and less likely to bite you, you so not have to take my advice on this but it could help you in enjoying your snake better of it's not trying to bite you alot. And also I said milks or corns cause there known to be less likely to bite you than a king snake not saying they won't bite you I'm saying it's less likely, but if kings are your favorite than by all means get one and enjoy it the more you hold and work with it the better they will become

Thanks, are milks much the same because there are Milk snakes I love to, like the albino honduran tangerine Miliksnake. Do they like to come out alot and how big do they get. Do they alos need a 20-40 gallon. Bigger or Smaller?

Sorry for asking for all this info its going to be my first snake.
its all good thats why we have forums to get your questions answered!!
milk snakes do not come out all that much except for nights, but all snakes are different out of all 3 of my milks my normal sinaloan milk comes out the most. they will be fine in a 20 gallon long for a long time. and honduran milks can get up to 5-6 feet 4.5 -5 being more frequent. and the albino tangerine would be an awesome snake to get!! although i find hondos to be a lil more of a shy snake when small but grow out of it with normal handling and getting used to the enviroment they are in, mine is flighty at first but settles down pretty quickly he is still very young 8-10 months old.

The trouble is that hiding is down to the individual snake. I ahve three corns = two hide most of the time and the other is out cruising around his viv constantly, unfortunately until you get the snaek you will never know.

Thanks Alot
I've picked up several snakes from Rebecca, both in person at the summer shows in Red Deer and the Calgary shows (not sure if she makes the trip up to the Edmonton shows), as well as had her ship. You may also want to check out the local reptile forums here in Alberta to get info on local breeders and upcoming reptile shows.

i was at rebecca's house a few months ago with my folks, but unfortunatly she does not really dabble in kings, the link you posted for me marica was broken, i did happen to see it on the corn website but it said shes got a long waiting list for the mbks and she wants to keep them or somthing like that. im considering calling and asking for one. just looking around, i would like to get 1 kingsnake, to eat the still born or deformed babies if and when i ever get them in later years when i start breeding, and mbks are just so darn beautifull i dont really need a reason other than i want one lol
thx for the sites ill check them out. mostly just looking atm, not 100% if its this year, next year, but my dad wants one Now! so im searching for him :)

there are hundreds of morphs for corns... and corns dont come out more or less than any other colubrid all baby snakes will hide, they feel they are in danger out in the open.

So, Molson, is your mother against Breed Specific Legislation? BSL is for killing and eradicating all dogs seen as violent/killers, mainly pitbulls. If she's against BSL, just tell her it's just as bad to hate snakes. Pitbulls have a TERRIBLE wrap thanks to the media. Snakes, also, have a bad wrap thanks to the media. And if that don't work, try and show her they're not as bad as she thinks. Show her a picture of a small kid holding a snake. Show her videos of people with snakes or just snakes acting cute(I really think it's cute when a snake puts its jaw back into place, resulting in an action we would call a yawn).
http://fineartamerica.com/images-medium/little-girl-with-snake-mark-coran.jpg
Kid still has a pacifier, yet holds the snake like a pro... almost.
Just look up Kid with Snake on google and you'll find tons. Even a little girl holding a juvenile(?) albino Burmese Python.

Yeh, my mother was the same way. Though, she hated them 'cause they ate meat, which is stupid 'cause 90% of our animals ate meat to begin with.

I remember those days... I used to beg my mom constantly as a kid to get a snake. I would go to a local reptile store and the owner was a great guy and really knew his stuff (R.I.P.) Steve, He would let me come in and hold some snakes. Eventually when i was 10, after years of daily pleading and convincing she allowed me to get a ball python. Just be patient with her and try to educate her on them and show her how much you know and how you get excited learning about the animals. Most importantly you must prove you are responsible enough to own them. All Moms are different. I am just sharing my experience and looking back.

Dont hide it away, snakes need a day/night cycle that they arent going to get in a closet. It also isnt going to help your mum to trust you in the future to get one "properly".
Just be patient, mature, and keep doing your research and reading, my experience would be that constantly asking/nagging isnt going to help either. It eill end up being that snakes are just a trigger for annoyance in your mum snd then it will never happen.
Be calm, be patient and good luck.
just like me my mom said no snakes only lizards, so my "dad" took me to the petstore and got me 2 baby corns when i was 11 mom was mad but got over it. and he bought me my first water dragon when i was 3 he took care of it till i was like 7 then i did he lived with us till i was 13 years old his name was "baby" Named him when i was young hahah the day he died was the saddest day:no:... but thats what happens i had 10 years with him that was worth it he was an awesome lizard

Oh I know that. In an earlier post I'd stated I planned on going to the pet store and getting a snake, cage, cage accessories, etc. while they were at work and I had the money I'd estimated I'd need. I have shelves built in my closet, so I planned on placing the, starting, 10g tank on a shelf, have the shelf above empty to place a heat lamp on top. They're metallic shelves with bars. There's about an inch gap between each bar, so it's not like the lamp would start a fire(wood shelves) or not shine through enough(solid/closely barred shelves). Would use a heatpad for night time temps and the lamp during the day for daytime, similar to how I do now with my BRB and my soon to be hognose.
And, ofcourse, there's the frozen mice. If she'd found them in the freezer downstairs, she woulda known and possibly flipped. I was willing to go the extra mile, get a mini freezer to put on the far left shelf top in my closet, run an extension outlet into the closet to run electricity to the lamp, heatpad, and freezer. The freezer would have doubled my estimate, but I was willing to do it.
As for trust? She would have gotten over it. She only claimed to hate them on behalf of meat eating, which is ridiculous because I eat meat, her husband eats meat, and 90% of our animals eat meat based products. She'd also stated earlier that she only cared about me getting more cats/dogs. She didn't care about more ferrets, rats, etc. This popped up 'cause I secretly added a rat to the family... She's unfortunately passed on account of old age. And to add to the situation, 2 ferrets and a golden malaysian gecko are kept secret from her husband. The rat was also a secret, but he one day meandered into my room and saw it.
Funny story, he came in, looked at it, and went,"Where's the other one?..." and I was like,"Uhhhh... What.. other one?" and he's like,"I thought you had two white ones.." and I said,"The ferrets?.. That's not a ferret.. The ferrets are over there." and he was like,"... Oh." LOL He's.. not too bright.

And if I did that she would never get over it and I would be grouded for like a month. Just for sneaking something behind her back. I am dead set nd eventually she will give in. Mabye she will even grow to like it so I can get more. Im also the same she said I could get a lizard but not a snake because of the meat thing. Frozen mice have no smell, sound etc. Crickets are noisy as hell and smell and can escape!!
if your 8 i think there is a reason why you cant get one? and also the snake that eats crickets and worms is a rough green snakethose can be cool too then she can say yes haha or get a legless lizard

She wont let me have one because she is not fond of mice even if there frozen and yes I know it is stupid because crickets actually can get out and make alot of noise but frozen mice cant. Its very confusing, I barely get it. Ill keep trying on her and see if she will give in.

Why don't you ask your mom what you can do to prove that you are responsible enough to own a snake and how important it is to you to grow and learn!
Just being a member of a forum like this is a great start, be patient and don't get frustrated or rude to your mother, it just put more ammunition in her gun.
As a mother, I know that some pets end up being mothers responsibility! Not saying that you would do this but at 13 there should be some give and take, its part of growing up.
Good Luck:)

Oh ya I have told her that she doesnt have to touch the thing or anyhting to do with it and it isnt the responsibility she is worried about she just hates snakes. Because she said I could get a lizard just not a snake. So its not responsibility. Its just that she is imposible to reason with.

Oh yeaaahhh.. I forgot about the legless lizards.. Only issue with them is, especially the Glass Lizard, is their tail could break off.. and rather easily, too. There's also the Slowworm lizard. Both are limbless lizards that appear as if they're snakes.

Have you gone to any of the local reptile shows? There's one every spring and fall in Edmonton and another down in Red Deer every summer. Convince her to go to one of those. Show her how excited your are and how interesting the hobby can be. There'll be tons of other reptile enthusiasts there and tons of breeders to answer all her and your questions - should you even have any more by then ;) My boyfriend and his mom were not cool with my snakes, actually phobic at first, but a couple years later and she's holding some of my snakes and going to the shows with us and my bf is bringing new ones home himself :D

Both of them were? 'Cause I'm getting a hognose because, one, I love 'em, and two, my bf has a mild phobia of snakes. Mainly of being bitten. I think a small snake that's reluctant to bite would be good for him to start out with. I mean, it's still my snake, but also to get him used to them and holding them.
Yep. My bf wouldn't even go into the room I kept my snakes in when we started dating. Shortly after moving in together, I made him hold my old anery when I was cleaning his cage out and when I was done and came back for my snake he had made his way into his sleeve, then relieved himself - oddly my bf found it kind of endearing
And the mom couldn't even look at a photo of a snake. A couple reptile shows later and she worked up the nerve to hold one of ours, and it was even one of our Dumeril's! She still doesn't 'like' them, but she appreciates them and our interest.
Oh, and it's taken me a year of awing at hognose pics for my bf to agree that they're cute. Unfortunately, they're illegal to own here :(

Really?.. That's kinda stupid. Wikipedia has them listed as 'Least Concern'.
Heterodon nasicus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterodon_nasicus)
And besides, they won't even let you have them if you buy them online from breeders? Kinda stupid if not since those are captive bred. They should atleast allow you to own them as long as they know where you got it from to keep people from snatching them from the wild.
It is a little silly considering they only occupy a very small corner of Alberta and are readily available through several breeders in other provinces where they're not restricted. Why try to catch a wild specimen when you can cheaply purchase a healthy cb and choose from a variety of morphs?

Eh well.. I guess some places have their own ridiculously stupid laws that probably haven't been thought out to the fullest extent. Kinda like how we have a law where your pets can't be buried. Something to do with polluting the water. I'd maybe understand if we used wells... but.. we don't use wells. I've only seen one well in this city and it got knocked over. Besides, wild animals die all the time.
