There's an interesting show on Animal Planet about a house that is "infested" with garter snakes! It's on right now, but I think it's on again at 11. The show is called Infested! . There are a few other episodes on tonight, the next one is about a cockroach infestation.:eek: I'm going to record them all and watch them later!
So if you're a Thamnophis fan, you might want to tune in!

Thanks!!
I just watched, I would buy that house in a second!
So what if there is a garter den under it.
BTW - They are Thamnophis Elegans Vegrans (wandering garters)
I have one as a pet.

Hey, don't give away the ending! I haven't watched yet! LOL
I'd rather have the snakes than the cockroaches that's for sure!

Since it premiered last night, it's not available to download just yet, in a day or two it will be.
I download most of my TV shows in HD, the quality is "blue ray" like, better than my cable company delivers to me!

At one point (I only watched a snippit before turning to Food Network for Iron Chef) I could have SWORN they talked about an illness or being allergic or something? But like all of you I would have had a hayday! Looking for the individuals in the group that had special markings or other differences. It is a herp lovers dream house...or trailer XD

the sickness was from rat urine, nothing to do with the snakes.

Leptospirosis? If so that is one nasty disease, lost some colleagues to it when i was working in construction and renovating old basements. Not sure what it is like in the states, over here our doctorrs are very slow to diagnose even when the person acknowledges that they have been exposed to feral rat urine. Two of the guys that died were just diagnosed too late to treat.

I guess the snakes were around for the rats, found a place to make a den, and decided to hang around? Honestly people need to stop overacting. Garters aren't even dangerous...are they considered aggressive?

Like most snakes, they are reclusive, However they are extremely curious snakes, I have personally (more than once) flipped over debris and spooked a garter that was hiding under it, only to have the snake return rather quickly to check me out.
To clarify, the rats were a different house.
Each episode of "infestation" features three unique households. The garter snakes were only one of the houses, the rats were another.

Gotcha. So they just had a problem with snakes in general...really cool looking and curious snakes. I swear some people...

The stupid part was they found ONE garter snake in the yard, so "daddy" crawled under the porch and found dozens.
wooptie freakin doo... Yep I'm going to declare bankruptcy and abandon my home for that....

Nice one infernalis. Personally I would call it a blessing. No chance in HELL of any other worse pests such as rats and mice.

That is cool that the snakes in the video are yours, sssnakelover! Garter snakes are neat little things. I just can't stand the musking. I really want an albino checkered garter someday though.
I'm really surprised the snakes would set up a den underneath a house- in my experience garters are very secretive and shy. I would have though that the human presence would deter them from nesting there.

I agree Will0w, thought humans alone would bother them. Also agree with Press, some of the things AP shows just sickens me, like, on Fatal Attractions, when they showed a guy with two tigers. One of 'em smacked away this special mixture to keep them away from him while in the enclosure. They supposedly hated the smell so it's a deterrant. So, when that happened, one of 'em grabbed him while he was off guard. Got him by the back of the head. I mean, they were playing, but you know that can be deadly for us. At any rate, he seemed to have passed before animal control could arrive, was motionless on the ground, didn't seem to be breathing, and the next thing that happened really boiled my blood. Animal control shot and killed both tigers instead of tranqing them and taking them to a local zoo or sanctuary. Shot 'em several times in the head. I commented elsewhere that I hoped they got smited by the law for killing two endangered species. AP sometimes makes things look bad, at times.. Both things on our part, and on making this or that animal look bad. Snakes have a bad enough wrap as it is, in general. So misunderstood.
At any rate, that family that completely ditched the house over some snakes? Just pathetic. :c I'd try to catch 'em. It's really awesome to see the owner of those lovely snakes aired here! I bet that was really exciting, showing off your darlings and having them aired all over.~ Did they actually ask you to come up there, pay you, or some other thing, like a volunteer form? I've always been curious how they get pet owners to simulate events for their shows.
Also, I looove albino checkereds~ I find them just oh so striking~
