Hi I tried talkin my redtail out yesterday and he hissed and opened up his mouth. He's been soaking a lot latly but I don't think he's going into shed because his eyes are still clear. Jus was wondering why this could be. Should I jus leave him alone or pursue to try and handle him.

if he wants to be left alone i'd leave him for a few days to make sure. maybe he's going to go into shed in a day or two or something. if he's soaking a lot it sounds like he's either going to shed soon, or he could have gotten mites or something. check around for TINY bugs.

Also just like people sometimes snake have a bad day an just don't want to be messed with. Snake eye will go blue then usually about two day before they shed they'll clear up.

He could be about to go into shed. When the shed cycle starts, there will be oils being secreted between the old skin and the new skin, and it's supposedly itchy for the snake. I've heard people say it probably feels similar to when we have a scab healing. They won't necessarily be cloudy right away- it may be a few days before you notice. Another possibility when a snake soaks but isn't going into shed is mites. Mites bite and cause itching and pain so they would result in a cranky snake living in its water dish in an attempt to drown the little buggers off. Check his water for mites- they look like black sesame seeds with tiny hair-like legs.
