View Full Version : Mites in the middle of bloody winter =(
It happens to everyone eventually, but I always expected to get mites during the spring or summer when I was buying new herps, not in the middle of the winter with two feet of snow on the ground. Three days ago, I had my CRB out, and she had no mites. Yesterday, she's covered in mites. A quick check confirmed that the mites have spread to other rooms. I haven't been to a pet store, or bought a new herp in months. All I can think is I brought them home from the herp vet (I had a snake there about 2 weeks ago, and he didn't have mites). I know they're going to be a pain in the butt to get rid of. I know it's going to be even harder than usual because it's about 50 degrees too cold outside to move my herps outside and bomb my house. Do products like reptile relief (that claim to kill mites on contact) actually work? Or is my only option to strip the affected enclosures, bake/soak everything, wash it all down with bleach, and soak my herps in a betadine solution? I've read that the products that kill mites are also fatal to reptiles.

Never had to use it yet (touches wood) but provent a mite is meant to be one of the best things to use. I have purchased two cans for when the inevitable happens. You need to read the instructions properly of course but from memory you remove the animal, spray the cage liberally, leave to dry the return the snake and it should clear the mites totally. The only thing you dont spray apart from the snake is the water bowl which you just wash thoroughly.

I swear by the Nix remedy. It's the least toxic to snakes, and it has the added benefit of killing eggs as well as larvae and adults. It's also safe to spray right on the animal. Do a Google search for "Nix for snake mites" and you'll get nice step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

provent a mite
worked first time every time for me.no need for repeat treatments
1 treatment remains active for 30 days
designed for reptiles
you put all your snakes into pillow cases in another room
then you take everything out your tanks and spray with provent a mite
NOT THE WATER BOWL,WASH THAT WITH HOT SOAPY WATER
DO NOT SPRAY THE SNAKE
wait 2 hours
put all the tank furnishings back in
put snakes back in
job done,mites dead...!!
never let me down
cheers shaun
Nix solution your best bet

I started with the baths last night as a stop gap (weather too bad to go to the pet store). I decided to start with my JCP, to get the worst out of the way first. When I went to put her in the warm water bath, I noticed she had streaks of blood all over her. I panicked, thinking "this infestation is worst than I thought!". Once I got her into the tub I realized it wasn't *her* blood. It was mine. It's sad when a snake bites you so often that you don't even notice anymore.
On the other hand, the betadine bath left her with absolutely brilliant mustard yellow stripes. She looks like police tape, which I suppose is accurate, since she's one snake you don't want to cross.
