Hi I am doing a math project on the PSI of a snake and I am wondaring if anyone would have any tips on how to do this. I could esaly show the teacher videos and examples and explane it but it would be awesome of I showed her myself with one of my snakes. Any suggetions?

are we talking ground pressure??
There are so many variables, a large boa will have more ground pressure per square inch than say a garter snake.
Larger snakes have a more solid mass index, smaller snakes have far less.
how long is a piece of string?

Yeah i heard of feeding chicken or quail. Seen a guy once feed a 15 foot burmese a duck from his pond.
watched a programme measuring the constriction force of large snakes.
they taped pressure switches onto a live turkey then put it into an anaconda cage.
900lb per square inch was what they measured and it held that pressure constant for 15 minutes.
they said it was the equivilent of a school bus sitting on your chest.
so your wee guy will be able to give you the mother of all cuddles one day chuck.
love the head shape and the eyes of these guys when they're adults.
cheers shaun

thats nuts chuck
ive been sitting scratching my head thinking what the hells the psi of a snake mean
i didnt cklick it was the constriction pressure
you the man chuck...!!

PSI + Pressure Square Inch. When i read it i remember you tell me about how they tested in my yellow anaconda thread.

PSI = Pounds Per Square Inch. ;)

i thought it was somthing like 1200 psi during that green anaconda test, i remember them saying it was the equivilent to a unloaded bus's tire sitting on your chest, or somthing like that?
Snakes have incredible constriction force!
I'm a mechanical engineer, so I had to comment ;)
I wish I had the equipment available in my lab to actually measure this extraordinary pressure (pressure = force per unit area; US units is psi (lb/in^2) and for you SI folks, me included, it is in Pascals (N/m^2) ).
I watched the show that you mentioned shaunyboy and freebody, I wouldn't doubt a large anaconda having a constrictive pressure of 1200 psi (8.3 MPa).
A couple of metrics so that you can get these numbers wrapped around your head:
900 psi is equivalent to 259,200 pounds of force sitting on your chest and 1200 psi is equivalent to 345,600 pounds of force sitting on your chest! (Assumption: I assumed the average chest size was 1 foot wide by 2 feet tall).
Another metric: Cursory research has revealed that bone has a compressive strength of 25,600 psi.
Essentially, either of those snakes could easily crush every bone in your body, if the conditions were ideal.......!
Sorry for "geeking out," but I just couldn't resist!

Again, the variable being the snake itself...
A corn snake will not have near the constriction force of a burm.

No apologies necessary. Those geek statistics are fascinating. :nerd:

Very true infernalis and thanks for pointing that out. These forces are going to be limited to the large constrictors.
And there are many additional variables being overlooked by my calculations. Nonetheless, snakes are incredible creatures and should be respected....And I wouldn't advise an arm wrestling match with your large burm, rock, or anaconda! ;)

Ch^4,
I'm asking you since you seem to know more about this mathematical equation...
What do you think the PSI of a full grown Jungle Carpet Python?
Around we'll say avg 7ft?

While I wish I had the answer for you, there are just too many variables to consider.
Can I ask for some more background information? (i.e., what kind of math class is this for? And what exactly, mathematically speaking, are you trying to figure out?).
If you just need to know the constriction pressure, a google search or shaunyboy's response should suffice.
JCP's are light-bodied constrictors, so I doubt they are at the 900 psi mark, but I would guess it's still up there.

in that tv programme they showed a picture of the same kind of school bus thats in the simpsons sat on a human chest
they also explained the 900lb per square inch part as a metal bar that was an inch on all sides.it was a big long bar and created 900lb in wieght on 1 square inch of your chest
the thing ive noticed with my diamond and my black and white diamond x jungle is when they constrict they blush
we reffer to it as blushing
its when all the white areas on their bellys, neck etc go a pink colour
imo caused by blood pressure resulting from the constriction
CH^4
same for me as presspirate mate
keep up the geek stuff
theres nothing better than a proffesional explaining things properly
your wife being into neurology is a great thing for us to
i can now pester her to explain any neuro issues more proffesionally
cheers shaun

they said on the show that the anaconda pound for pound also had the highest psi rating conpaired to other restrictors as well. somthing to think about when holding one of those giants everyone loves :P doesnt sound like such a good idea to do it alone anymore eh lol

im with you mate
i would NEVER work with any of the big snakes alone
these snakes are powerfull killing machines that should be given the respect they deserve

Thanks shaun for the nice words!
You are exactly right about the steel bar...just imagine a steel bar that weighs 900 lb and has a 1 inch squared cross-section sitting on your chest; not pleasant! If your chest is about 12 inches by 24 inches, 900 psi would be equivalent to 288 of these steel bars resting on your chest! (not so fun).
Again, there are variables being left out, but I find this both fascinating and amazing.
Most of her work involves studying the human brain and nervous system, but there are many similarities, so hopefully she can be of help!
You all have helped countless times, so we are both willing to lend a hand whenever possible!
I too would never handle one of the giants alone Freebody, but if you have already been handling these Goliaths, I wouldn't let the numbers scare you!
Only in extreme conditions would you have the equivalent of a couple hundred thousand pounds on your chest....The snake would have to be fully wrapped around you and would likely want to have you as a meal to exert those awesome pressures. Around the neck is a different story.

Hey guys thanks for the help and Ch^4 its a grade 11 level 2 class so its not to complex and yes I have seen that video more than once and just yesterday and its 90 psi not 900 lol

Okay, I was just wondering, sounds like a fun math class though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but feel free to ask if you have more math questions ;)
Eeek, 90 psi....My calculations are off by an order of magnitude!
As per dudesteve151's correction of the constriction pressure, the equivalent weights on your chest should be 25,920 lbs and 34,560 lbs, for snakes with 90 psi and 120 psi constriction capacity, respectively.
Still an incredible amount of pressure.
