Well, to answer your questions to the best of my ability. You will not be able to get them back in their cages without disturbing them. Depending on the temperament you should wait a half hour or more AFTER they have swallowed their prey. Your snakes can swallow twice the thickness of their body at least. How old is your boa? And what are you feeding him now? My BCC is About a year old and will be moving to medium rats soon.
not sure i gotta ask hes new im feeding him rat pups that are the same thickness, should i move up to weans ?

If i were you i would go the up from weaners. I put a thread up of a scrubby to show people how big a meal they can handle. Im not saying to go out and get the biggest rat you can find, but i would move him to small adult rats.

what kind of boa have you got? if a meal is exceptionally large compared to the snake and it takes too long to digest it can cause problems.. mines a rainbow boa tho so it may be slightly different for the BCC and BCI,,
guyana red tail and he is still young

I feed my non- arboreal snakes in a tub, when the prey has moved down inside their body away from the neck and i can see that they are no longer squeezing it inside them i pick up the tub and hold it to the entrance to their viv, they can then just slither back into the warmth.
Couple of them just shoot staight into the viv but i have a couple that will sit for a few minutes with me holding the box before deciding to move. Hopefully the warmth of the viv should entice them back into it.

if i feed outside the tank the minute they finish swallowing the prey i gently lift them back in
can i ask why are you feeding out the tank ?
you carpet will take much larger prey than pups
rat fuzzies or fluffs as they are sometimes called will be better for him
what age is he ?
just he may need small weaner rats
carpets can eat very large prey items
check out percy's scrub python thread for proof:yes:

It's not my carpets i feed out of the tank its my little guyana red tail boa he generally makes quite the mess when hes constricting, i also dont want his to eat any substrate!

If your temps are right they can digest big prey quite easily its only when you have fluctuatons in temps or your temps are wrong that any sized meal can be a problem. Most snakes can quite easily handle bigger prey than most people offer.
The lump in my male scrubby is gone already and he was fed saturday and its tuesday today. All i am waiting for is the big old poo that usually follows food.

pups are very easily burst
your boa should be moved up to rat fuzzies or maybe even small rat weaners
you'll find these dont burst the same as pups.i even have bother with young carpet hatchlings bursting rat pups.
