I fed a bunch of snakes tainted fish..:mad:

My Infernalis' were eating mice, why didn't I just feed them mice??
I thought some fish would be a treat..
this just sucks.
I threw it all in the garbage..

Wal Mart - Intended for HUMAN consumption. and since no people died, it will never fly..
So far no more deaths, But I'm not taking my eyes off the snakes for another day or so.
When I cleaned out the Infernalis cage, I found six places where the snakes puked.
2 years ago I got a batch of bad Salmon, with similar tragic results.
I guess the smart money is to just spend the dough and get a farmed trout from an all organic store.
For now I guess I'm setting my guppy tank back up.

now I just shattered the Infernalis enclosure cleaning it...I give up.

When it rains, it pours. It sounds like your having a very bad run at the moment mate. I hope it all turns around for you in the near future.

Thanks.. the other snakes are still doing OK.
OOOOH NOOOOO!!!! :( Oooooooooh mate :( I`m so sorry dude :( :( :( Oh what a terrible thing to happen :( Chuck`s got a point Wayne, get that crap in a bag and seek legal advice. I know it`s not about money dude but you may well be able to claim damages here. Don`t feel like it`s not worth it or Walmart is too big. Get those f***ers sued. I sued a company once, you`d be surprised how easy it goes if you`re in the right and your heads in the right place. Oh man what an awful thing to have happen :(

oh no! what a horrible bunch of happenings! at lease you have survivors though. I know people who have lost every single snake due to a bad food source. Hope things get better.
My sincerest condolences to you. This truly is a difficult year. I hope things get better for you.
How bad is the death tool now? :(

Oh no, Wayne...I'm so sorry to hear. You're really having a tough year. Hopefully it will get better. I would go to the store where you got the fish and complain. I don't know if it would do any good, but I'd be flipping out at the store. That's so awful..but it's not your fault...you couldn't have known.

Thanks everyone, I'm off to the seafood market for a fresh trout fillet.
It's going to be pricey, but my snakes are worth it to me.
So far the total death count is 4 snakes.
Lost all 3 Infernalis' and one Radix het.
I hate to sound like a monster, but the het really didn't phase me like my whole collection of Infernalis' there was a lot of money lost there, and my favourite species no longer exists in my house.
I wonder, 18 months ago I got some bad salmon, it wiped out a whole slew of babies, One survived but even as an adult he has nervous convulsions from time to time.
Evidently the bacteria attack the nervous system??

I am certainly not an expert on this topic (biomechanical engineer), but my girlfriend is a Neurobiologist. I've picked up bits and pieces of her trade, and it sounds like the little guy certainly has some type of neurological disorder; whether it was directly caused by the fish, or indirectly by bringing to surface some underlying problem that didn't present itself until after consuming the fish (due to elevated stress), I don't know.
I will consult the specialist and post any findings or hypotheses. Again, I'm so sorry for your losses and hope things get better for you.

Wal Mart - Intended for HUMAN consumption. and since no people died, it will never fly.. But how do you know nobody got sick from it?
Here's what you do go in to the Wal Mart complain and tell them how their tainted fish killed off your breeding stock. If you have to make a big stink about it. Then have a friend call one of your local news station and tell them about you making a seen and if it killed your snake maybe it's harmful to humans. If they do a store on it i'll bet you anything people will start coming forward saying they got sick from it and then you have a case.
Further research on the topic revealed that some fish may have elevated levels of lead. Lead poisoning can cause neurological and behavioral implications if left untreated. Info on lead poisoning: Lead Poisoning-Topic Overview (http://children.webmd.com/tc/lead-poisoning-topic-overview)
I'm not sure if that helps, but lead poisoning could be a suspect. Good luck with everything.
Pregnant women need to avoid certain fish because they contain a fair bit of mercury. That`s just how it always is though and this seems to have been a case of the fish actually being spoiled doesn`t it.... Any number of nasty bacteria could cause the sort of symptoms we`re hearing about I`d have thought. We`re thinking of you over here mate....

I am so sorry to hear about this :( That's a lot to go wrong in just one day. I hope you don't lose any more but either way it's terrible to lose your favorite ones of the bunch and then have an enclosure break to top it off.
I'd keep proof too and try to get them to compensate you also if it were me. They shouldn't just be allowed to sell you bad fish and get away with it. Yeah it is intended for human consumption but that shouldn't matter, if it's bad fish it's bad fish, it could have hurt you and our hospital bills could have been far worse than the cost of the snakes plus you could sure for pain and work lost, they should consider themselves lucky to pay you a couple grand verses what you could sure them for if it had been you who ate it.

salt in large amounts is bad for humans mate and snakes wont be exposed to it in the wild so im thinking your mate could be correct wayne
cheers shaun
That makes sense. Was it salted? Maybe preserved in salt? Naaaah that`d be obvious wouldn`t it...

If the packing facility also packs salted fish, it's possible that a salted fish run had just completed (Salt Cod for instance) and the workers failed to wash down the equipment properly, then it's possible that there was some salt contamination on the fish.
I get my fresh Trout tomorrow.

I brought this thread back out as a reminder that ALL frozen seafood is treated with chemicals to preserve freshness, enhance appearance.
You simply MUST make sure you are buying certified chemical free organic seafoods if you are feeding it to your herps.
I was mistakenly feeding Chomper shrimp that was hosed down with preservatives I cannot even pronounce, and treated with (gasp) SALT.....

The key thing to remember, these foods are intended for humans, we can tolerate these preservatives, however sensative herps cannot.
It only takes a few grains of salt to kill a small colubrid.
Repeated ingestion of salt by larger animals like a monitor lizard slowly damages organs..

Thank you for bringing this up. It is very good information to know and I would have slapped WalMart with a law suit if the DM didn't do something about the rotten fish.

Not even sure if it was rotten anymore, it may well have been the chemical preservatives added...
The point I am trying to make by bringing this back out is that it is of paramount importance that we buy only certified chemical free organic foods for our herps.
When I get into garters, I will only feed fish as last resort.
