When I got dakota she was in shed. I thought that everything went ok but it now looks like she has what I was told could be eye caps how do you help these come off if I do anything she is not moody and allows me to handle her with out a problem. And ate well.

do you still have the shed that came off??

If you do, look at the head of the shed, if there are round holes where the eyes are, then the eye caps are retained, if there is even the thinest layer covers the holes, then there are no retained eye caps.

The easiest way to get them off without stressing the snake is to soak (or provide a very damp hide area) and let your snake rub them off on it's own.

Poking, digging or otherwise molesting the snakes eyes in any way would be very very stressful to your snake, and should be reserved as your very last option.

I would love it if I could check the shed and have it be a little easier for me but in the transition from one home to another her humidity was not consistent (and I don't think the girl I got her from had a very good humidity for her) I had trouble getting it up when we first got her figured it out now but her shed was in several pieces on evening when I got home from work. I don't know for sure if she has them just worried. For her and the next shed.

Have never had it myself but the pictures i have seen show pretty obvious retained caps - not sure if you can get retained caps that aren't obvious?

The pictures I posted were the night I got her and her shed cycle was just starting they don't look as cloudy as they did then maybe I should take a picture tonight and see if that may help it could be something or I could be being just a worry wart like I tend to be :freakedout:

Retained eyecaps look like the snake has a piece of Saran Wrap or dry film over the eyes. They can crack and then they are easier to see. Go to the drug store and get something called "Pura Lube" and squirt a little bit on the eyes once a day. I've used it in the past when my BP had eyecap trouble when I first got him. It works like a charm. It softens the caps and usually they will fall off after a week or so of treatment.

I unroll, and save all of my sheds. (Weird? Maybe, don't care) All have eye caps on them. It's a piece of mind thing I guess. But, IMO always check them sheds!

It's not weird, Presspirate. I do the same thing. I always take the shed out and unroll it and check that the eyecaps came off. Once I have checked it out, I toss the shed out. I have saved a few from my biggest snakes though. They make neat wall decorations, lol.

I check them all and then daughter takes them to school - kids love em!
