Breeding locusts

I am planning, after lots of research and reading, to breed my own locusts for my lizards.

I have all the basics sorted and just wondered if anyone else on here breeds them and has any hints and tips for sucess? Or any do nots as well!

If its as easy as people have made it sound then financially it makes a lot of sense. We spend £12 a week on them at the moment.

They need fresh food, striaght from the garden plus any left over fruit and veg. A tub with four inches of sand, an empty margarine tub will do. They will live quite happily in a faunarium, got a couple of spares anyway. Couple of branches for perches, again from the garden. And each female that gets mated will lay 200 eggs!

Two weeks to hatch, five weeks to be food size, seven weeks to mate - feed some off, leave some to mate and after about three months i should have a sustainable food source. The initial breeders should cost no more than £3 and no setup costs, so fingers crossed!! I will let you know how it goes.........

Will do - hoping to do a picture session on Monday (feeding day) as all the snakes gotta be disturbed for feeding anyways.

have you considered breeding dubia roaches instead? dont locust fly for great distances? i would like to breed locust as well for my new sav im getting in 2 hours < :) so i can feed it a variety of bugs, but i cant find them in canada and im not sure how easy they are to breed, if i was to do some real searching for one. let me know how it goes plz :)

Locust can fly but they will breed and be fed off before they get particularly flighty. Some of the ones we have bought in tubs have had wings but have never seen them used as yet.
