Results of my first breeding of Tapinauchenius violaceus
http://venomous.com/webpics/2010/T_violaceus_sac_F3.jpg
7.15-7.31 paired with MM
8.19 sac laid - I decided to leave the sac with the female until they hatched
10.22 hatchlings out, no count yet
Sac from F #1 was laid 9.13 and it's at least 2x as big as this one was

Teeny compared to most T's....maybe 5" max, I bred these girls at 3.5"
Cool species, flighty but not bitey

Allow me to be the first to say.....Eeeeew:crazy:. I think adult tarantulas are pretty cool. (Couldn't own one myself:no:) But the babies:freakedout: my gosh all I can think is GET EM OFF ME!!! Now that I've said that....
....I have a few questions.
How many babies do you think you have there? (Kind of like guess how many jelly beans in a jar. Sorry, I have no prize for you though.) I'm sure you don't intend to keep them all, so will you sell them locally, or wholesale them? What do they eat as young? How fast do they grow? Will you have to separate them at some point? What do you estimate the survival rate to be? When you breed them, do you breed them in jars, or move them after they have done the deed? How do you know when the female is gravid? After she has laid the eggs, how do you get her out? Or does she not come out till after they have hatched?
Phew.... I'm sorry for all of the questions. Though the little ones are kind of...nasty looking to me. I am absolutely fascinated! Nice job and good luck with them!

I'm guessing 50-60 spiderlings, it's -very- hard to visually guesstimate, I'll get a full count when I separate them out from mom.
I may sell a few but I will mostly work wholesale trades to get into higher end T's.
They'll eat small crickets. I usually crush the heads and toss them in.
They grow quick, I got these adults as spiderlings in Jan '09.
I expect all of them to survive but I'll have to separate them within a molt or two (1-2 months)
I bred this species by 'shark-tanking' two spider cages in one large cage. This gives the male opportunity to evade a non cooperating female
I knew they were gravid because the female dropped a sac 3 weeks after she was bred. In species where the gestation is longer, you can 'candle' the female, looking for a yellow glow to indicate fertile eggs in her abdomen.
You don't remove a sac from the female until about 30 days unless you have a mechanical mom because the eggs need to be rotated. Mommy spiders actually take very good care of their offspring. They will seal themselves into a chamber to take care of the sac. I've pulled the sac and incubated them myself before but I wanted to let mom take care of this one to see it happen.
Did I get them all? :)

Oh! My bad.
No biggie, they start off as eggs, then eggs-with-legs, then first instar, second instar (this is where the picture was taken with slings out of the sac)

I can sell them starting with the next molt, they are fully ready for life ;-D
Males usually live 2-3 years while females can live up to 20 years.

LOL! I've had a couple of those moments myself. I ended up with a nice sized (7") MM ornata on my pants over my groin once!! Got him off safely and was like WHEW!!
I haven't bred any of my pokies yet, though I have tried w/4 females (ornata) 1 looked very gravid but died , a couple others have molted. Pokies are a little harder to breed IME.
I've got a def male formosa that I'll be attempting to breed with my females as soon as he matures. Glad you liked that girl, all of mine look like that under the flash, too bad the purple doesn't show up without bright light. Still pretty and most of mine are chill. You want me to keep you in mind for a couple?

It s so sweet, I want to buy a veitnames centipede so bad. they creep me out as well, which is why i want one so bad lol that blonde one looks alot like my old therapusa blonde, i think thats how its spelt, Goliath birdeater :P but it didnt have that pretty pinkish color on its legs like that one their. very nice.

Jeez man, that Blonde is prolly half the size of an adult T. blondi, those things get HUGE (12"). She's a tree spider so maybe 6-7" and much lighter build than one of those terrestrials

my goliath died at about 4 years old, it was about 9" and crazy agressive. any movment near the cage and it would flick hair, if you opened the cage it would run at you and try to jump at you, i would poor water in from the top and it would run over and star attacking the stream, and not just one bite and realize its nothing but over and over... great feeder tho lol

Your story is why I almost exclusively keep old world spiders, I'd rather risk the bite than deal with the hairs! I've only got two flickers out of 40+ T's

Hey blindone i just got back from the reptile expo with a new T, i got a 1" P.Fasciata!! :) ill post you a pic soon as i get them uploaded. FAST!!! i read they are fast but OMG, Fast dont explain it eh... wow, it got out of the cage 3 times before i finally got it in their with a lid on lol, it is real calm tho, the last time i caught it in a glass and placed it in the cage with the lid almost on i put a pen doen the cup to touch it and get it to come out of the cup so i could remove it and close the lid and it didnt strike at it or even show any agression, just speedy movment when he gets going. Im super stoked about him/her<not sure, when its a little bigger and it molts i snap a pic and maybe you can give me your opinion :) Wooot Wooot :)

Grats buddy! I'd love to see a pic of your new sling. Fast barely seems like an adequate description of Poecilotheria speed, I'm thankful that they aren't more aggressive.
If you can get a good shot of the sling's epigastric furrow I'll be happy to offer an opinion as to the sex. Hope it's a girl for you. :)

I like the caging but just to let you know, the slings like to burrow a bit and an adult should have a vertically oriented cage. You probably already know all this but I feel compelled to mention it :)

Ew spiders are grosssss imo
That formosa is awesome!
I just downsized my T collection to the max. All I have left now are my P rufilatas, P. formosa, H macs, and S. cal : ) I still have a 6" P. regalis female that I'm trying to sell. As well as an H. incei and a LP sling.
Btw, freebody, Tarantula Canada just brought in a shipment and they have P. metallicas. I would looooooooooove to get a few of their subfusca's but they're a bit out of my budget at the moment.

Wow that enclosure is huge for a sling! I like housing all my T's in smaller enclosures when they're younger. It's easier to maintain humidity and it's also easier for the sling to detect their prey : ) Goodluck with it!
