Dude, I put a dozen mice in a container once in August, fell asleep while they thawed, woke up next morning, forgot the mice and went about my day.
Three days later my kids asked me what died:eek:
So I find this little poly box sitting on the shelf in the snake room, I won't even describe it.

I put a large mouse under a heat lamp in our bedroom one time. For 4 hours. I almost puked trying to get it to the garbage....Live and learn.

Hope you threw out the microwave too.... LOL!! That stench is NOT going to come out no matter HOW often you scrub it down!
Best way I've found to thaw out rodents is to put them in a bag in hot tap water. Change the water every 5 - 10 mins to keep it warm and in no time you'll have a fully thawed and warmed up rodent snack for your snake. :) Some people leave the rodent thaw in the water to give the snake some extra liquids. Don't see the need for that myself... :)
Good luck next time!

years ago one of my boas got sick and i fed it a couple large rats, about 6 days later it decided to regurgitate it.....OMG my eye were watering it smelt so bad, it had already broken down all the hair and skin... not even breathing through my shirt made any difference. lol good times lol. When i thaw my rats out i just put them in the water and feed them to the snakes wet, a little water isnt going to make a difference,

Friday night i was in a hurry so i pop the rats in the microwave on defrost. When i went to pull them out one of the rat fuzzies had either ear wax or a ear infection. All this nasty yellow stuff was coming out it right ear. So it went in the trash. Not sure what it was, but wasn't going to give it to any of my snakes.
The nasty smell every was a Savanna monitor i use to have threw up two mice. 10724 I fed it and we left town for two days. Smell like a rotting corpse. Took three month to get the smell completely out of my bedroom.

We had to sleep in the living room for the next two month. Threw the cage out got rid of the savanna (trade him for a boa). Threw the curtains and the bed out just trying to get the smell out of the house. It was the nastiest thing i ever smelled. Cleaning the room i kept run to the bathroom to throw up.

LOL, im not glad it happend to you , but im glad im not the only one who had this terrible thing happen to them lol while i was cleaning my tank i was almost puking as well, i was litterally in tears from gaging and nothing made the smell go away, it last for 4-5 weeks and I used baking soda, i washed the tank out with tomatoe sauce, i figured if it supposed to work with skunks maybe it will with this, which it did really seem to help but it wasnt good enouph, only time worked and lots of time was needed lol. I could see getting rid on the sav, i held a grudge against my boas after, as bad as it sounds but i really did.i looked at them and thought, you did this damn you lol. mine did it in the middle of the night, on a work night, i woke up to...wake up!! OMG clean that tank now!!... 2 am and this happened and you cant just deal with somthing like that in the morning... try explaining that to the boss when i called in absent, he bugged me for the rest of the 2 years he worked at my company, someone would call in and he would say, oh i wonder if his snake puked and that why he could not make it in eh Dave << lol

I just did the same thing....so no need to describe it to me!! Infact I have done it more than once....or twice LOL. It is horrible and you think that I would learn. In 22 years of keeping reptiles you have pretty much seen it all.......smelled it all!! :)

The most foul stench, nausiating and potent is Monitor feces.
Chomper had crapped on me twice now.
The first time was not so bad, he hit my feet while I was on the computer. (free roaming the house)
The second incident was not so lucky. I was showing him to a group of people and he started wiggling around, He was asking to get let down, but I ignored these signals and just kept on talking....
About 2 minutes of squirming about and he finally just decided he had enough, the tail lifted up and I wore it right down the front of me, with a full adience to see it happen.
The smell is similar to, if not worse than the mice smells described above.

i tried the hair dryer on high that was a nasty smell!!!
you were maybe too close to the rat in question resulting in synged rat hair
hair dryer always works well for me
takes a bit of explaining when a non snake related visitor arrives at the house when im in the middle of doing it though.
" why are you blow drying dead rats hair "
is the usuall responce:yes:

Oh man, dead rodents is the nastiest smell ever. I have had snakes wrap their meal and appear to be getting all ready to swallow it and then get bored and leave it..the next morning it stinks up the room. I had a rainbow boa regurg. once after 4 days..that was probably the single most disgusting thing I have ever seen or smelled in my entire life...my snake room is on the second floor and I smelled it as soon as I got to the bottom of the staircase..it was like the body has disintegrated and it was just a pile of guts and fur and bones and nastiness. Oh God, I think I'm going to be sick just thinking about it...blech!

I have my reptiles in my rat barn. Nice and toasty in there year round so they do great. Seeing as how I am in the barn every day, I always check on them first thing when I get in there... and last thing before I leave... so thankfully NO bad horrifying smells. When I had them in the house though... now THAT was a different story!! They were in our "hobby room" and I had fed one of my boas on Monday... on Wednesday everyone was wondering where the heck that foul odour was coming from. We didn't realize it was coming from the uneaten dead rat which had sat on the freakin' heat pad until Friday when my husband went in to work on a model. LOL!! That was when the snakes were moved OUT of the house... LOL!! Thankfully I have a VERY good and understanding hubby who helped me clean out the enclosure... and who pretty much told me to get out of there as I was gagging so much I was pretty much useless. Eyes watering... heaving... yeah.. the whole bit. UGH!!

So far only had one "smell" experiencd. Bought a bag of mice along with some other supplies and when i got home the phone was ringing so i dropped the bag of frozen mice by the radiator and went to answer the phone. Wife came in and quickly looked in the bag and saw the other reptile supplies so put the bag by the boiler. I come of the phone and have forgotten the bag.......
About four days later the stench hit........... Luckily it was one bag and it went straight outin the dustbin.

I just leave mine out on a plate for about 2 hours before I feed snakes.
Our BP is the only snake here that likes warm prey.
all of my colubrids will eat room temp pinks, the garters will eat them cold.
