I posted the pics in another thread, but I thought I should open a new thread in the appropriate area. Here is my first of 2 planned display vivs all finished. The case is an old console stereo. It came to me with the components missing. I used it as an entertainment center for awhile, then I looked at it and thought....."Corn snake." Sooooo I hauled it out to the garage, and cut a back and new bottom for it. Painted the whole inside wit 2 coats of Killz primer, and 3 coats of rustoleum black paint.Installed the glass front and a light and..... voila.

it looks way better as a snake tank than some sterio unit mate.
i walk about my house thinking if i turned our wardrobes on their side id get a retic in them
if i pulled all the drawers out that chest of drawers and fitted glass turned it on its side id get an adult carpet in it
its a good job my wife puts her foot down or all our furniture would be turned into snake accomodation
you did good mate,it looks great

Thanks guys, your comments are much appreciated! I hate painting, but it turned out all right I think. My next project is and old pine cupboard that was turned into a ferret cage. I ll be going through the same routine with that one. Also, we have a bookshelf, 4' long with 3 shelves 14" deep. I keep looking at that thinking "Dividers, glass doors...HOGNOSE HEAVEN!"

Sounds sweet! What kind of wood is the bookshelf made of?
That is awesome. They look great I was thinking of converting a old console tv. My husband also built me a tv stand that is 24 deep 25 tall and 40 wide all it needs is a piece of glass and some heat. Oh and a new friend

The book shelf is oak, and my wife solidly supports it. "In time"

watch when using pine wood mate i know it can irratate carpet pythons lungs to cause ri's
its the pine oil and sap thats dangerous to them
theres some other woods out there that are bad for snakes but someone else would have to list them as i have no need to be up on it.i only use purpose built shop vivariums.
all the best with your building projects mate

No worries there Shauny. The particular piece I intend to use that is made from pine is almost 100 years old and well dried out. (It was junk when I got it. Used it for a ferret cage for awhile) It will be washed out, primed, primed again, painted, painted again. and caulked caulked ,caulked to high heaven. (Can I get an amen?)

And here's #2 We picked up the cabinet at a garage sale a few years back with plans to refinish it.....You know how that (Sometimes) goes. Last year, I remodeled it into a ferret cage. It worked well till we decided we didn't want the ferrets any longer. So, it has been knocking around the garage for the last few months. Snake Cage! I thoroughly washed and bleached the inside, painted it with 2 coats of killz primer, then gave it another 3 coats of rustoleum indoor outdoor all surface black paint. I had to add a ceiling, as it was previously open to allow for drawer access. I removed the drawers to mount the light fixtures. I was going to just mount the drawer fronts, but as I was trying to remove them from the boxes, the splintered to bits. (They don't build them like that anymore.) I was able to save the doors, though they have seen better days.
I have 2 light fixtures mounted. On the left is a basic ceramic fixture, with a 150 w ceramic heat emitter. I made the bulb cage from hardware cloth and bolted it to the ceiling around the fixture. This fixture is wired into a rheostat which is flush mounted on the side of the cage. This is temporary until I can get a thermostat. At that point I will remove the rheostat and install an outlet box. The second fixture is your basic fiberglass fixture which I have a red 1 w LED. This is plugged into a timer for night lighting.
Vern moved in today, here are some pics....

Thanks guys, It still needs a few cosmetic touches, (Such as false drawer fronts) But it was definitely ready to be used, and Vern has been in a tub for a few weeks, I wanted to be able to look at him.
