I went to Bristol zoo the other day as part of a little break my wife and I had in Bristol. There really weren`t that many snakes there, in fact, I seem to have more species in my snake room than the zoo has! lol Now there`s a claim to fame... Anyways, here`s one of the beautiful Scrub pythons they have....

There were two of them in there, both were stunning!
I wasn`t super chuffed to see a sign there though which read something along the lines of "Bristol zoo does not condone the keeping of reptiles as pets. Many reptiles are imported in terrible conditions and a lot of those that survive are destined to die in inadequate conditions kept by inexperienced people" Something like that, along those lines anyway. I can`t say I liked that. Although unfortunatly there is certainly some truth in it I suppose. :( That`s what experienced keepers get so annoyed about isn`t it, new keepers buying all manner of snakes before they know what they`re doing, buying the essential kit well after they`ve bought the snake and only then after us begging them to. Things like that. I just didn`t think it fair to tar us all with the same brush. My snakes are cared for as well as the ones in the zoo thankyou very much and I have as much experience and knowledge as your keepers too. That sign has been there so many years, it wants taking down or at least re bloody wording. That riled me for a few hours that did lol

same here, i agree with what you said, people hurting their pets due to lack of easily obtained knoledge erks me, but that fact that i spend a great deal of time learning as much as i can,and spare no expense of money nore time to be the best keeper i know how to be and to be frownd upon in such a manner erks me even just as much, the sign should read... Their are lots of idiots in the herp field due to lack of experience of preperation before getting a new reptile, but here are some places you can get help before you choose to take on the wonderfull joy of keeping herps, let us help you help your reptiles.... :) that would make me feel much better.. OH yeah Dame those snakes look sweet :)

cool scrubby mate

that sign would have got to me as well

to the point i may have tried to track down their reptile guy and asked him a few questions on scrubby husbandry.

its crap when we all get lumped into the same pile as a bunch of idiots who dont know how to keep their reptiles alive.

its easier for me as its only morelia i work with but some of you guys keep all sorts of different stuff and its most impressive how you make them thrive in captivity

same old thing though good news dont sell newspapers only bad news does...!!

anyhows thats my mini rant over (sorry folks)

cheers shaun

Elo Shauny :) Hmm. Yeah I`d have been happy to look for someone willing to back up that bloody sign but wifey certainly wouldn`t have liked that so I just quietly rumbled away to myself lol Maybe I`ll write to them about it, not that i`d expect anything done about it...

Unfortunatly no. I took a handful but that was through glass and this one was the only one I could save using my processing software to get rid of the glare and reflections. It`s pretty good going to get this one :) I thought they`d have loads more snakes than there were. saying that though, these Scrubs were reeally pretty :)

Ugh, that sign would have gotten to me as well, but unfortunately it is true for a lot of people. Too many people do buy snakes or other reptiles on an impulse, without knowing what they are doing, and it's the snakes that suffer in the end. But they could at least give a shout-out to the keepers that do try their best.

Sigh.... Yeah I don`t know what`s worse. The fact they don`t bother to mention good educated responsible keepers or the fact that there are plenty of muppets that buy a Corn snake, think they know it all and then go out and start buying all sorts of snakes they know sod all about. :(
