im building some mice racks to breed my own mice. a friend of mine built some and advised me to use 3/8 in chicken wire. this way the mice can still eat through (cant through 1/4in) wire and hoppers cant slip through, like with the 1/2 in. but i cant find it. i understand it is a special order item any idea where i can get some?

Hi Dave, I don't think I'm properly envisioning what you are trying to do. But I have found 3/8" hardware cloth at local hardware stores, Menards, Lowes, Home Depot etc. Usually it is green pvc coated so it will not rust. Would it not be easier to use tubs?

Neat idea check your hardware stores, or maybe there is a farm supply store near where you live. Big box home improvement stores should carry it in the garden section. Is this something like what you are looking for?

I have built my own rat racks and after fighting with the right size of hardware cloth I have found it easier to just get a little smaller wire and put the food down inside the bin in a corner. Its up to you but there are all sorts of racks out there just google it.

I just use food bowls in my tubs.
I like to check on my rodents at least once a day.

its called wire cloth in the states? i never seen that term used before. here is called chicken wire or wire mesh. but same stuff it seems then. :P
1/4" for rats, 1/8" for mice. Both found at Home Depot in either 5 or 30 foot lengths.

Farm stores are usually cheaper than Home Depot or Lowes but they all carry it. I use 1/4 in. for mice and 1/2 in. for my mice and rat racks. No escapes of either using these sizes.

Check out some of the wire mesh companies around you that might be able to help you out. I built something similar in the past, and I used Belleville Wire Cloth Belleville Wire Cloth Co., Inc - Woven Wire Mesh | Wire Cloth | Stainless Steel Wire Mesh | Wire Cloth Strainer (http://www.bwire.com/)
They had the stuff I was looking for in stock ready to ship.
