View Full Version : Dewie the giant green snake scared me today

If anyone remembers, I shattered the front of my green snake cage, I eventually moved him to Chompers old cage.

When I built it, I used 2 sheets of wood on the front with a spacer to clamp the glass in place.

This left a 1/2 inch gap inside the construction that had a small 1/2 x 1 inch opening way up high in the left front corner. (I never noticed)

Tonight when I went in to feed Dewie, I could not find him.

The top of the cage is screwed down with wood screws, so I have to use a screwdriver to open the cage.

Now this math is not adding up.... Missing snake, top screwed on tight?? where in the heck did my snake go??

While looking around inside the cage, I see a green head poke out and look at me, then vanish back into the wall.

After a quick disassembly with a screwdriver, we found Dewie sandwiched between the two layers of wood.

I have since filled in the gap, then re-assembled the cage.

Before anyone asks, I label my 12 volt bulbs so I don't accidentally put one in an ordinary household socket and blow the bulb up...

Dewie is quite the handsome fellow. He looks so regal and poised in that photo. How large is he?

Beautiful, I think the green snakes are so clean and classic looking. Would love to keep one someday. I know what it is like to have a cage mishap. My spider ball escaped a few months back from her enclosure. It was scary...

This snake is sweet. How big will he grow? Where are they normally found?

He looks like an active little guy!

He is an adult male, about 3 feet long and very slender.

I had a female 2008-2009 and she was almost 4 feet and just a wee bit thicker.

They are (unfortunately) wild caught in the Chinese rain forest and exported.

Sad thing is so many people don't even know what to feed them, I did make it a point to tell both importers, and at least they now sell them with proper care info.

When I got "Limon" I was clueless as to what his requirements were, and at that time Cyclophiops Major was not something that Google could find and data on.

I had fun learning that snake, within a week I had him set up in a tall cage with a tree in it.

I tried every known snake food and the snake chose earth worms, They suck down night crawlers like spaghetti:)

Lately things are changing, and Google searches for Cyclophiops major show a lot of results leading to the forums I discuss the snakes on, so I meet a lot of new owners too. Sadly a lot of them wind up telling me the snake died after a few weeks..

They absolutely cannot be kept in any sort of standard colubrid or boid cage, The profile of the cage needs to be tall and have places to perch up off the ground.

One day I plan on closing in one corner of the reptile room like a closet, but with a glass door, so I can put a fairly big potted tree in it. That would be cool, then I'd like to have a mating pair.

You are talking to him... ;)

Size wise, they are around 3-4 feet max, slender and relatively calm.

They are like a large green ribbon snake (Garter snake that likes trees)

If you must buy a cage, obtain one that is for arboreal snakes. My home build cage is almost 6 feet tall, but I broke the glass. Dewie is still in the "substitute" cage, but he seems quite comfortable in it.

They are only "semi-arboreal" so make sure you have some ground space to move around on.

The ONLY food I have ever got this species to eat is fat night crawlers.

temps are not real critical, above 80 and below 100 is ideal, a tropical environment similar to the rain forest is what they like most.

Send me a PM and I can put you in touch with the 2 importers who get the nice specimens in.

i definetley will but i am not quite ready want to get everything in order first...somehow though, i think i wont be waiting all that long! would you recommend i build or get a ready-made? i saw on one of your posts that it was 5 feet high, but that the inside was only 3 feet high....its made 2 feet off the floor?

The cage I built started out as a small table, I added sides, a back & framing along the front and a sheet of glass, it was coincidental that the floor of the cage was up off the floor, Don't start out with a table. ;)

i found this on the internet...what do you think?

One of the biggest misconceptions about ... arboreal snakes is that their enclosures should be very tall. With tall cages these snakes typically select the highest perch and their water bowls are usually located on the cage floor. Sometimes, the snake never comes down to drink and eventually suffers from dehydration. When snakes become active, they crawl horizontally through the trees -- not up and down the trunks of trees. Horizontal space is far more valuable than vertical space. A good general rule is that the snake should be able to comfortably reach the bottom of the enclosure from the highest perch. Even though these animals spend most of their lives in trees, they make good use of horizontal space. When active, they spend their time crawling through tree branches and occasionally move from one level to another.

would this be applicable to this type of snake? as well as floor space of course?

That seems quite true. Like I said, He seems quite comfortable in the temp cage, it's about 2 feet tall, I ran a cross bar about 18 inches up off the floor, Dewie can reach into his worm bowl and water dish without coming down, sometimes he does just that.

Other times, I peek in and see him entirely on the floor of the cage.
