View Full Version : Breeding a touchy one
I`ve got a few Royal pythons but my largest and most picky one only eats a handful of times in a year as a matter of course. She`s about five foot and as thick as your arm, she doesn`t ever look thin, she`s a monster. She just won`t eat regularly. For this reason, I`m more than a little reluctant to even consider breeding her. I could never be happy she`s fighting fit if she`s not eating regularly. This got me thinking today, I`m not the only one with a touchy Royal python. What have you other breeders got to say about it? I`m not even considering it at the moment but it`s worthy of dicussion. I`d ceratainly like to breed her if I could just be happy about her condition......

my opinion on it is
who decides what is eating regular
us the humans or the snake itself
im thinking she may not follow the feeding patterns we deem normal eating but for her it may be exactley as she'd preffer to eat if she were in the wild.she is getting enough nourishment out her current eating habits or she wouldnt be so big and healthy.
you say she's a monster and showing no ill signs.so just because her eating patterns are a tad irregular i see it as no reason not to breed her.she is up to wieght and healthy after all.
i personally would go for it mate.
cheers shaun
I`d certainly like to :) I think I`ll weigh her and post a few photographs. She certainly looks good and healthy and she has eaten a good few times this year.... Yeah I`ll consider it I think.... :)

A long as she looks good and healthy i see no problem in breeding her. I am yet to have a fussy adult feeder, my guys are all pigs so i have no first hand experience with this situation.

OK OK I know its not a Royal python but as most of you know my Blood red corn ate for the first time in 6 months about a month ago and not again and he has happily knock up his partner so I am expecting babies soon. Although feeding is important to every living thing, you must remember that with snakes (most reptiles in fact) in the wild feed whenever they have the opportunity which is not always that often.
As many people have drummed into me as long as there is no weight lose and some growth your snake is health if there is weight loss and or the snake does not feed then you have a health issue. This way of thinking does lead to a lot of stress but that is why the vet is there.... for reassurance. Let your vet check your python out he will quickly be able to tell you if there is a problem or not...
