i have a young MBK Mexican Black King that has just finished her first shed (since i have had her). Any way she has shed completely except for just around one eye:mad: i am worried that this might cause some damage if it dos not come off, any suggestions. Tank temps are good and there is and always has been a moist hide.

is it the eye cap left on, or shed around the eye?

Looks to me like the edges of the eye cap - sure someone can help you with regard to getting it off (or telling you to leave it til next shed!)

yeah thats a retained eye cap, first and easiest thing to do is give it a couple of hours in a small tub with some very damp moss. Hopefully this will losen it enough for it to come away by itself.

If its very stubborn you need an equivalent to this

http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_7571_viscotears-liquid-gel-10g.html

apply a blob of this to the eye gently with a cotton bud, DO NOT rub the eye with the cotton bud. Leave it for a few hours and the eye cap should have come away.

Retained eye cap for sure yep.
I would NOT use the product suggested or any other product other than water.
I have had great success using water & a damp cloth the loosen them up & then gently remove with either fingers or rounded end tweezers.
It may get it off on its own in a humid hide as well, but intravention may be required.
Eye caps are not as much an issue with older snakes, but younger ones that are growing it can restrict growth & mess their eye up. Mark

Try a wet pillow case, put her in there and see if she can get it off herself. If this fails i have used a rubber thimble after soaking the snakes for a while, but be very careful as its easy to damage their eye.

Any reason why not, other than you wouldn't?

The product is perfectly safe, as has been proven by literally hundreds if not thousands of applications. It is certainly far safer than using tweezers to remove the eye cap.

i'm with bladblaster on this one i'd like to hear the reasons for not using it.as said its been used a lot in the uk and i have not read of a single case where it damaged the snake in any way.

tweezers would be a very very last resort if i used them at all.

cheers shaun

I personally never use any products as they are not required & if you read the labels most of them have lots of various warnings etc.
Why go out & spend time & $ when there is lots of water in the tap ;)
As for tweezers very rarely if ever are they required as eye caps can usually be removed with a damp cloth & water in less than 2 minutes.
Some species the skin around the eye caps goes in behind the edges of the eyes & it can be carefully pulled out with rounded tweezers IF one has a steady hand & knows what they are doing & only with larger snakes.
Over the last decade or so keeping thousands of snakes I have removed numerous eyecaps & never had a problem doing so without the aid of any product(s).
It like that shed ease crap they try to sell here in chain stores etc. IMHO a waste of time & $ trying to sell a product that is not required that is mostly water anyhow. Mark

Thank-you that is a much better reasoned explanation, and I see your reasoning. I also agree that stuff like shed aid is rubbish. However I will maintain that this product is safe and does work extremely well ;)

Likely is safe as if you read whats in it there is not much to it besides its mostly water anyways, Mark
