I accidentally shattered the front of my Chinese green snakes enclosure last night.

Broken glass everywhere, and my poor snake is in a ghetto box right now.

Urgh how irritating! He's okay though isn't he?

Dewie is fine, except he is in a ghetto box right now.

I have to either get more glass or build a new cage.

did something similar last weekend when cleaning my lots tanks.i stood on a water bowl which flipped through the air and hit the glass doors i had taken out and laid against my bed on the floor.the china bowl took a 2inch circular chip out both sides of the glass.it left a very sharp slither of glass.i ended up tapping cardboard to both sides of the glass.it will do for now but its a pain in the a**e to open and close the tank doors.i should be able to get a piece of glass cut for £6 to £8 ($9 to $12 ).still a pain in the butt for a split second mistake.

glad to hear you and the snake are ok wayne.

cheers shaun

That's why I like plexi, even if it is stupidly freaking expensive.

The front of the cage removes for opening, I was feeding him when I allowed the glass front to swing (slightly) while I held it with one hand.

It made edge contact with a small table next to his cage. At least it smacked the table and not the vivs on it or under it, things could have been a lot worse.

Thankfully the garter tanks under the table and Toby my black racer all have fine mesh screens on top, so the glass pieces did not fall into any other tanks.

There was a tank that I just removed babies from, un occupied, but the glass did pollute all the nearly new substrate. (the neonates had only been in it about 2 weeks, hardly soiled at all) so I had to empty out that and clean the tank too.

Plexi glass is the only way to go. I am so glad all of my cages have plexi glass. It just some much safer. Temper glass works really good, but is super expensive. I had to replace half the window in my house because of my youngest child. $146.00 for each one, (32"x 36") but now he can't break them. Plus they change meds so he not as aggressive.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Wayne - sure you will get it sorted soon enough not to worry the snake too much - main thing is no injury's to any of you!

we have toughened "safety glass" in all our vivs - is expensive but worth it with a little one running around.

It was safety glass, that's why it exploded into a zillion tiny pieces. Just like a car window does in an accident.

Oh! I myself find plexi glass alot cheaper and safer than any other for cages. Temper only good if it has a frame all the way around.

Sorry to hear wayne, as long as you and all the snakes are fine.

Moved Dewie into a wood enclosure 3 feet wide, 24 deep and about 30 inches tall, I installed a cross bar and attached some vines and sticks.

It will have to do for now. I found what I need to make him a bigger cage than he had before, and the glass is in an aluminum frame, I will attach it permanent, and make a wood door on the side.

mines are saftey glass to rob.it shocked me at how little it took to cause a 2 to 3 inch circular chunk out of it.the part that was left was razor sharp.all my glass has the british safety kite mark on them so id still watch pal.
