View Full Version : Probably still born but....
I pipped an overdue Carpet python egg today. I wasn`t holding out any hope anyway because they rest of the clutch went mouldy immediatly, I thought maybe they weren`t fertile. Anyway, this is a titanic shame but inside the egg is a stunning Jungle Jaguar neonate that isn`t moving. I`ve just made a small "V" cut in the egg. It isn`t smelley or anything and the baby isn`t decayed at all. Could I be wrong? Could it be alive but still "cooking"? Obviously it`s staying in the incubator anyway but what do you think? No movement = dead neonate?

Fingers crossed and holding hope that it is just resting.
If there is no smell or decay, I would wait it out and see what happens next.
Yeeeeah that`s the plan, I`ve convinced myself it`s dead but I suppose a small miricle could happen in my snake room after all that upset....

Just trying to be optimistic mate....

All you can do is hope mate. I hope your miricle happens
Me too :) You never know, the very fact it`s not all decomposed and stinky is cause for a little hope at least isn`t it? Although I suppose it could have JUST died that hour. It`s got me wondering how much movement you have expect in a neonate pretty much ready to hatch? If you`ve pipped the egg and see a neonate in there, you would think the thing would respond to a little gentle stimuli at least. Yep, you`re both right, a little optimism goes a long way.... :)

Expect the worse then if its good news its great - if its bad news your prepared!! Keeping fingers crossed for you tho mate
My motto is "Always expect the worst. That way, when it happens, at least you were right."
LOL I`ll have to remember that one Naffun! lol ;D
........ Still motionless.

My motto is "Always expect the worst. That way, when it happens, at least you were right."
Another good one like that is " always set your standards so low, that you can never be dissapointed. " Never aspire to be anything. That way you will never fail." All of these are good and funny.
Feebo i hope he is just being very sleepy and lazy mate!!!
Yeeeeah that would be nice. It`s still motionless and in the same position this morning. Presumed dead really but the very strange thing is that it doesn`t smell what so ever! The rest of the clutch when they went mouldy absolutley stank. A very distintive manky feet type smell. You`d think think it would smell wouldn`t you? It`s ceratinly staying in the incubator until it does! Or until there`s some visual indicator of definte death. Odd... I`ll keep you posted. Would you like to see it anyway eventually? I`ll certainly be having a look at it even if it`s dead, poor thing.....

I found that if you slit the eggs before they are ready, they will be pretty motionless its perfectly normal. So fingers crossed for you.
One I slit stayed in the egg for almost 2 more full weeks, I had pretty much given up on it, but it came out when it was good and ready :)
Well that`s VERY good to hear Bladey !!! I mean... If it`s not stinking it can`t be dead?! That should be stinking the incubator out by now! You`ve given me a little hope there dude, thanks :) I`ll make a beeline for this thread if it wakes up :)

hope it turns out alright for you feebs
Cheers Sean :) I`ve just checked it again and it`s still motionless but also still absolutely stench free! It doesn`t smell at all. Even little pinkies stink just over night. After being told a few posts back that someone else had had this happened and the snake still emerged healthy and alive two weeks later, I have SOME hope. I`ll be so happy if this little guy tirns out to be alive ! :)

so will i lol :D good luck!
It still doesn`t smell even slightly bad. I wish I knew a whole load of Bhuddist monks that could chant and ring a giant bell with a tree trunk until it hatched, that would work! lol :)

I can`t think of ANY other reason it wouldn`t smell, it HAS to be alive doesn`t it?!

i would think so if it doesn't smell but i have no breeding experience. i hope it all turns out ok for you though
It started to smell so I delved in a little deeper and decided it was dead. I opened the egg to have a look and try and acertain what had gone wrong, especially whether he was over cooked and had lost his egg tooth and drowned. No thankfully. He had a large mass connected to the umbilical cord which I`m not sure should have been there? Not at this late stage anyway. The mass was free floating inside the egg. The abdomen local to the umbilical cord was visably collapsed. Anyone seen this before? I`m happy it was nothing that I could have done there, something has gone wrong inside the egg by the looks of it. Shame, he was every bit as pretty as his dad.....

sorry to hear it feebo.
Cheers... I need to be thick skinned about it though really, breeding so many species I`m bound to see plenty of still births and feeding refusals resulting in death and all sorts along the path I`ve chosen. It is a really big shame but there`s always next year, and now I know she produces fantastic Jungle Jaguars I`ll look forward to it immensly :)
Thanks for all your comments during this guys, it`s been so nice to have some support... :)
