Ugh! So I was on Facebook today and an old friend had this status up about how they found a python under a pillow case! I don't know the whol story but that's not tue point, everyone was saint about how the kids were in danger and just over reacting about it. Make snakes look even more dangerous! Now sure kids could be in ranger, if it was a big snake, but under a pillow it was prolly a lil ball.

Sorry for my rant, just.makes me mad that people are so dumb!

Snakes are a massive phobia for people. My inlaws wont get out their car in the driveway, my parents wont go near the reptile room and a lot of friends wont come round any more as they have kids and are paranoid about the venomous snakes getting out. I completely understand their feelings and dont force the issue, it is just a shame now that we cant have any family gatherings or throw parties for birthdays here any more. I know the boss is shattered all her friends dont come round too much any more, i know she used to love having girls nights here.
Thses are parts people over look when getting any reptiles as pets, especially venomous snakes.
It does annoy me though when the media thrive on fear mongering and use any chance they get to have a personal attack at the reptile hobby.

I can understAnd about the venomous ones. Bit its just irritating that people don't understand them so they instantly bash them. I've been bit by my yorkie more than my snakes.

Its not so much the venomous ones for the majority in my case. My friends are the only ones who have even bothered to look at them (vens). Most of our problems started with pythons, even though they are in tanks. Yes they are big but they will stay in the cage with locks and cant get out. People have a fear in general, doesnt matter if they are venomous or not its a phobia brought upon by over zealous parents and public, then preyed upon by the media. Snakes will never become common ground like dog's or cat's and we will all ways be freaks and weirdo's for owning them.

Yes we will, and its very sad. Personally I would be right up front and center to see some ones hot collection! But no one round me have one. I too understand that some leisure are scared of them cuz a phobia, I am scared of clowns, I would never go around a clown, then again people don't have pet clowns lol. I do truly hate the media...... I would love to start something to educate people bout snakes.

The only way to educate properly is through persistence and lisening to all the tough guys talk about shovels and how many snakes they have killed. I love having people over who show a genuine interest in snakes. I have had work collegues over with their kids getting to hold some of my largest pythons. I love showing people our locally found vens are not on a mission to kill all of humanity like their grandparents say. Its just sad that people still to this day preach "the only good snake is a dead one"
I collect some of the scarier looking clown dolls and paintings lol so it also has an effect on some of the boss's friends as well.

unless its only for a week ;) you could invent some sort of mechanical hand which could automatically drop a mouse/rat into the enclosure ;)

I think i must be a bit different in most peoples eyes i guess haha. Now spiders are not my strong point but i do admire them, the same goes for centipedes.

That is another good point with reptile keeping. It is extremely hard to get a group of friends to feed big pythons and vens while you go away. I have not been on holidays in a long time and cant see myself going anywhere in the near future.

I think most people are scared of things that they dont understand - and unfortunately it is easier to fear than to find out about it instead.

On a different but similar note i encounter the same ignorance about my disability - i have chronic back pain, which externally doesn;'t show but causes massive amounts of pain and restricts my mobility. The only time you hear about chronic pain is in the press when someone gets caught ripping off the benefits system. Like snakes there is only bad publicity in the media.

It's got to the point where i just say that i got hit by a truck (which is true) rather than saying "i have a bad back" as the look you get from people is completely different.

Only for another month or so, then my Tegu arrives and it needs to be fed every day, and tub feeding is pretty much mandatory for them (otherwise they learn to associate your hand with food, and since your hand is, basically, made of food, it doesn't end well.)

I didn't find this to be true, my Teg knew the difference between my hand and a rat

Well, apparently cage aggressiveness is really common if you feed in the enclosure. (plus, if you tub feed it guarantees you handle your gu at least twice a day, which really helps in the taming process) All things considered, I would rather tub feed than hope for an exception. You're a venomous keeper, so you're a bit more comfortable with flirting with danger than I am.

Our monitor Chomper seems to have a thing for sweaty feet.

If we take him out and are in socks after a few hours in shoes, the aroma of my feet or Dorothy's feet will drive him crazy.

He lunged at my toes once with his mouth gaping wide open, i had to jump back before he could latch on.

I have heard the skulls of rats pop like a walnut when he bites down, so I was not about to let him chomp on my toes.

That reminds me of Sharon Stone's husband Phil Bronstein. She and her husband got to visit the komodo dragon exhibit at the los angeles zoo because they were benefactors of the zoo. They advised him to take his shoes off because they were worried his white shoes would spook the dragons. Unfortunately one of the dragons decided his bare feet looked mighty tasty. He had to have extensive surgery to reattach something like 7 tendons.

The dogs were too smart to mess with Stewie, they once tried to steal a banana from a iguana and were tailwhipped for their efforts.

Stewie had no interest in, or fear of, the dogs. She liked to climb up and look out the window or lay on the back of the couch.
