View Full Version : Cutting 101

Just wanted to share one of my newer...(well my newest!) Video! It's basically a how-to video on cutting Ball Python eggs. This isn't meant as a debate of whether to cut or no....just to show one way to do so if you chose to.

Well other than the super lame music not bad, note that there is no verbal instructions so mute is a desirable option LOL
As for manual pipping in most all cases a healthy snake will successfully pip on its own.
In my past experiences I have found that more often than not manulally pipped eggs have contained snakes that are smaller, weaker & quite often deformed (spinal kinking, extra heads etc.).
Even snakes that have had normal appearrances have proved to be problem feeders or just randomly up & die potentially due to unseen internal issues.
I know you asked for no debate but I thought I would throw those points out there for those wondering what the debate is about as many feel very strongly about weakening the captive gene pools with snakes that otherwise never would have hatched.
Mother nature afterall tends to have her reasons.
Also keep in mind that in many cases the first snake to pip may be days potentially even a week prior the last snake to pip.
Sometimes if manually pipped too early tehy will also leave early & not get the full benefit of the yolk they would have otherwsie absorbed or they will sometimes emerge with it still attached & drag it around with them risking a rupture of their stomach in the bellybutton area or potential infection due tot hat or via the yolksac they are draging around.
Advantages being that in some cases it saves an otherwise perfect baby that may have drown.
personally I will wait until most all have pipped/hatched on thier own & then cut the last few if any remain. I will quite often take ones that have pipped on thier own & make the slices larger as well.
I have had many times in the past perfectly healthy babies get scared & pull back in only to not finding their way back out & drown which really sucks so enlarging their "escape hatch" LOL is never a bad idea.
Not a bad video anyhow though as stated not my type of music LOL Cheers Mark

lol omg! You all are haters! (I am joking!!) The funny thing is when I first mixed it up, my boyfriend HATED the music I had with it so I ran around trying to get a different track....after about 3 hours of surfing Jamendo...I found this.. I can't win! Glad this isn't the lotto I'm playing! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_15_2.gif
And ty really for the comments.....it takes all kind in terms of music....but I do appreciate the feedback! Next time heavy metal? hmm...not sure that goes with eggs and babies!

I was thinking some thing like a mad scientist would be listening to. Something evil and deranged like Bon Jovi. LOL. :crazy2: Rob Zombie would be perfect.

lol yeah it would but.....problem was for me I was TRYING to keep it legal and since I had to fit it to the movie that I'd already finished....was looking for a length range. But you guys are right.....though I do still like the song... hah!
Barry Manilow would be nice.

Gotta love Barry? Hmm, not sure that would be my first choice on sounds.
Though I don't agree with manually pipping an entire clutch, I do think your video was great for those who can't sit on their hands and wait for the miracle that is Mother Nature to do what she does best on her own.

Ty.... and again this wasn't meant to condone or to promote cutting of eggs. There is great debate pros and cons on whether to cut or not. As always it is the breeder's personal choice. This was meant to provide a 'safe' way cut eggs rather than the razor wielding I see rampant on the web.

Yep! And ty Malachite.....I have a huge love for da babies myself! ;)

some hybrids dont have an egg tooth so theres no choice you really have to give them that helping hand.:crazy2:
next time you should try that gravely voice they use on american horror film voice overs, while you give us a running commentry on your actions.
your also right in saying theres a lot of butchery posted on you tube re cutting eggs.

There really are not pros to cutting, at least not to the babies. Nothing good can come from cutting an egg except to quench the burning inpatience in your gut.
Some of the pictures I've seen of manually "pipped" eggs were disturbing; blood everywhere, severed veins, sickly looking babies. Many of the big breeders, who should know better, are just as guilty.

Ty so much Shaun!! Appreciated your ideas on the music and commentary...I'll have to take it into consideration here...I can say that Allison Crowe won't be used for any vids shown here!! She overwhelmingly got voted off the island.. ouch!

Mykee...
While I appreciate your right to your opinion....I hope you appreciate and can respect my right to mine. If you'd like to debate cutting then let's take it to another thread? This thread AND video was meant to be informative for those that do choose to cut their BP eggs. And whether you like it or not, many breeders choose to do so.
Since my method of doing this isn't severing veins or arteries or necks and such...and actually condones being careful to avoid any venous network...I'm not sure what your point is other than... you personally don't think its a good idea. Since there were no body parts flying about my video...why argue that point with me?
I get that you don't agree with cutting eggs. I get that you believe that eggs should pip naturally. I respect that. Thank you for voicing your opinion. However, I don't necessarily agree with you on that. Let's agree to disagree.
Sincerely,
Bree
Bree, I'm not entirely sure as you why you are being so defensive. I think I made it perfectly clear that I agree that if you MUST cut eggs, than your video should be a must see. You have eliminated a few of the issues that many breeders and hobbyists have with cutting eggs BEFORE their time has come to pip on thier own.
I ocassionally pip the last few clutch stragglers myself, so I am not totally against cutting.
However, as mentioned, there is ZERO benefit to the baby in cutting the eggs early. Nothing to be gained at all from the egg or the baby, it's ALL about us. Not my opinion, it's a fact.
