I wish we could keep retic pythons. Even if wasn't a morph. They would be real fun to keep. I love the berms and boa's, rock pythons and all that. Don't know much about the different types of morphs. Not soo fun to learn about when you can't have one. Its great to see what other keepers love to show off. You americans can get just about anything. Thats a stunning snake, i'll remember that one. as of april we need to get a permit to own then, they are illegal to breed and sell and import now, soon im sure they will revoke permits and ban the owner ship as well, im canadian, you know the other americans lol :P. in canada we dont have near as many breeders as they do, so many different morphs and breeds are ouch of are reach as well.

that aside willow the aussie government is in talks as to releasing some rough scaled pythons out to zoo's across the world.this is due to how successfull they have been with captive breeding programes.they are now pretty easy to get hold of in australia.
and we have the german breeders who seem to magically manage to get hold of aussie stuff somehow ;)
i predict rough scaled pythons will be outside australia 5 to 10 years from now.
also one last thing,it will be 100% harder to get stuff legally into australia than it is to get stuff legally out of the place.

after much digging around and a bit of luck i have found out there are rough scaled pythons in the usa.
Terry Phillip has bred them.they are owned by reptile gardens.
this is all i know but maybe you can find out where reptile gardens is in the states willow.
its actually got me a tad excited as if they're in the states then sooner or later american breeders will have them.this means we can get them exported over to the uk.
cheers shaun
A google search puts "Reptile Gardens" as being in south dakota. Checked out their page, looks like they mostly have hots, no mention of rough scaled pythons. However, one of their curators of reptiles is Terry Phillip.
So if anyone is in South Dakota, you have my condolences, but could you check out Reptile Gardens? =)

As you said shaun, these will be readily available for you guys soon enough. I find it rather funny that it always starts in germany though. Our governent is supposedly still looking into exporting some, whether or not they actually will is another story.
With the amount of exoctics available here now, it tells me that it must rather easy to import and expot illegally.

to be honest mate my post on import export was me trying to wind the guy that started the thread up (i'm sorry).i just felt he was a tad out of order the way he put his post across.i'm old enough now to know better.:hmm:

CARINATA,you should not have been so smug in your statment,Terry Phillips in the usa got a founding breeding pair of rough scaled pythons LEGALLY FROM THE AUSSIE GOVERNMENT IN 2004.they also gave a pair to Sweden.terry has successfully bred his roughies.there are also a few illegally purchased roughies in europe.so my friend maybe next time you will think before you make rash and smug statments to people who have been nothing but polite, helpfull and mannerable towards you every time you've been on here.
you may be asking what proof i have of this.well Terry Phillips was kind enough to e mail me back when i enquired about his rough scaled project.he is a very respected herpetolgist in the states.he is also the head reptile keeper at a big public facility.
so it looks like we will all be able to have access to roughies very soon.
hope your reading this percy mate as you were correct in telling me your government had made plans to export some roughies.i really cannot wait to work with them.they are a fantastic species.

Doesn't really matter if we did or did not have rough scale pythons. Any Aussie would have to be jealous of our corn snakes. Can't import anything down under any ways. My ball pythons are just as rare to them.

it mattered to me mate, rough scaled were only discovered by the aussie's back around 1982.more and more is being learned about them every day.for me it would be pretty amazing to get to work with a snake that so little is known about.that and its totally nice looking snake.
i hear what your saying about the aussies having a lot to be jealous about.roughies have been a dream of mine for a while now.the fact they're out of australia will give the rest of the world a chance with these beautys mate.

thats exactley how i'd describe bredl's to work with.imo wierd that at a glance they look so similar to each other.id recomend bredl's for the same reason your mate recomended the roughies.im trying to get hold of some hypo bredl's at the minute.for a future diamond/bredl/jaguar project.its been done so much with normal bredl i fancy seeing how it would turn out using hypo's.if you could get anything what would you get retic's im thinking ?

06-08-10, 05:36 PM
Yes funny you should say that as my friend compared them to a bredli also, just that the roughies have a lot bigger teeth haha. Some of the hypo bredli that are gettin around now look insane. The bredli over a jag could produce something quite special, it would be unreal if the bright orange/red of a hypo bredli had a major influence.
Hmm tough question shuan, if i can pick a venomous as well a python i would go with a gaboon viper ( i am absolutely head over heals for them ) and a african rock python ( love the head shape and purely their size ). With both these i would want pure lines as i dont believe you can really enhance either of these guys, but thats just my opinion. There are many more, but i will stick to only 2 as so i dont bore everyone.

06-08-10, 06:15 PM
i'm the same with female diamonds mate.imo nothing but a pure male diamond should be bred to one.a friend of mine has a very nice diamond/bredl/jaguar bred by a guy milkelson in europe.i'll get his name for you tommorrow.one of the nicest carpets ive seen.have you seen the jagpondro's that were produced in the states.jaguar carpet x chondro they were amazing.ive watched documentry about gaboons gorgeous head shape.re teeth i think whatever adult morelia tags you ends roughly in the same result a lot of yelping and screaming for the wife to come help you get them off (feeding response hits).
cheers shaun
percey39
06-08-10, 06:27 PM
I would like to see the diamond/bredli/jag, it could be very interesting. Yeah jagpondro's are not my cup of tea, but are definetely easy on the eye. I myself am more of a purist/locale specific man, but i do appreciate some of the hybrids and the work put into them. I did see a interesting cross of a gaboon and i believe a puff adder, was great colours but to me a gaboon is untouchable haha.
Here is a pic of their teeth, this is not my picture nor do i claim any rights to it. I would not like to feel an adults grasp on me lol.

The teeth are pretty bloody big for a young snake, they resemble a handful of needles to me. I would imagine you would have to not jerk at all when bitten as the teeth being as long as they are would break if you pulled away.

Dont be mad at this guy. He probably bi polar or somthing. Besides you have nothing to be jealous of. Rough scales are extreemly docile. And when i say docile i mean they dont move. at all. Dont worry about the one brian held on snakebytes. They simple dont bite. And yes you can feed them in the same enclosure under supervision of course and provided they are extremly hungry. Common sense should be exercised.
If your going be jealous... check out my newest snake.
And a blue water water python for good measure.
rough scale python are not great to handle. In fact they stay very still because they dont want to be handle. They think they are camoflaged. Dont get me wrong they are cool pets. Wild ones are interesting but once they enter captivity 'they simply do not do anything'. Unlike morelia splitoa who are great to handle. Take a picture.

lol....photo stealer. It sucks and sometimes trolls can cause real problems. But I can help but laugh a little at some people actions. How do you steal a photo from someone from the forum and repost on the same forum and think you'll be believed? lawl. hilarious.
Freebody... i like your attitude about it though :)
