If I find shes that are all stretched out nice or unroll easily I save them all.
They then get bagged up & hnaded out to kids & reptile shows & demos.
Kids tend to think that its pretty frigging cool.
Back when I used to have a lot more snakes there could be days where a dozen adult snakes shed, even then I threw away more than were kept.
They tend to piss/crap in them alot as well, which makes for an easy clean, but not a shed one wants to keep LOL THX Mark

Most snakes do not eat while "in blue" (clouded up phase before the skin actually comes off) and generally while the skin is peeling off in the wild they would not be actively looking for food. But I have several that will pause in peeling off their skin to chow down. They are generally very hungry when they are done shedding because it takes a lot of energy for them. I do have three snakes that will eat no matter how cloudy they are- a Macklott's python, a superdwarf retic, and a leucistic Texas ratsnake. They just want to eat all the time, any time...lol.

gonesnakee
04-21-10, 01:07 PM
I would have to say in my experience just as many will eat in shed as not.
I have a few that will sometimes & other times no as well.
In captivity we tend to feed more frequently than required more often than not, nothing in the wild is on a weekly schedule afterall LOL
It actually never hurts to miss a feeding now & them or skip everyone for an entire week even or go 10-12 days instead of 7 etc.
Some snakes get real pissy when in shed & others gooble it up just like always.

That's one thing I love about reptiles, If I am too tired, I can "blow off" feeding them.

The damn mice and rats on the other hand, I have to care for every single day, or they will eat each other. no "blowing off" the rodents.

Will0W783
04-23-10, 08:54 AM
Yeah, that's why I'm a reptile person anymore. So much easier and more rewarding IMO. And they don't poo every 2 seconds like rodents do..lol.

Ditto - in my situation its good to have animals that dont need constant care - snakes are sooo cool too!!

Will0W783
04-23-10, 10:42 AM
Oh I know. I absolutely love them- such fascinating creatures. My sd retic, Baby, went for a photo shoot with a model Wednesday night. We had a blast- if I didn't know better I'd swear Baby loves the limelight...lol. She does seem to enjoy interaction at least. And the model was raving over her. I love giving snakes good publicity; too many people are afraid of them and/or don't bother learning about them.

must admit i like that to wayne. " oh im knackered so i'll feed them tommorrow " like mark said its good to keep feeding times jumbled up.hatchlings i feed religiously every 7 to 10 days.the rest get fed when it suits me best.sometimes 7,10,14 days apart or anything inbetween.

A shed is not an accurrate measurement of the snake though.
Sheddings will be considerably longer in most cases due to the stretching involved.
I'm guessing if you measure the actual snake it will be closer to 7ft.
Cool that you finally caught it in the act, Mark

One of my balls will do the unused condom thing too. It is weird. Then again, she is a hider when it comes to sheds unlike the other two balls. She does the whole thing in her hide, maybe thats the reason.

As most of you know i am in the room with my snakes about twenty hours a day and can see into all their vivs from where i am sat.

I also have the vivs open for cleaning/poo checks/water topping up etc a few days each week.

I got one of my young corns out tonight and he has shed!! I have noticed no cloudy eyes, no signs off "blue" whatsoever!!

I think i have a secret shedder!!!!

both my dum and my bp decided tonight was the night to shed. the python didn't shed in 1 piece, but had a clean shed. he/she got her head and neck skin off in pieces, then the lower 2/3 of her body was one piece. she also took a smelly crap ;)

the dumerils of course had a perfect shed. his head piece came off, but the rest of his entire body was one piece. he looks Awesome!! i'll grab some pics later. the bigger the snake, the slower the metabolism i guess, because the entire shed process for my dum took about Twice as long. seemed like everything was slowed down.
now he's GUZZLING water lol.

it's crazy, last time i measured the snake he was Just about 5'6", his shed just now is 6'4" lol. i'll have to take a new birds eye and use the snake measuring program to find out how much he grew.

funny, mine did the EXACT same thing. he shedded the top 1/3 of his body in shreds, then got the rest in 1 piece, and it was wadded up in his hide. then he took a big crap and roamed his cage for a while.

Any sheds that are not soiled & easy to stretch out again I save in a big bag & they get handed out at shows & demos for kids.
When the collections all up in full swing its not uncommon for numerous snakes to shed the same day, they are just trash to me but kids LOVE them, Mark

I think the reason I like snakes so much is because we used to have a teacher, Mr.S, who would bring in his collection of corn and garter snakes with him to class all day once a year. He would bring different sheds too and let us feel them. It ensured no student was afraid of snakes.

And Wayne that is horrible, I'm so sorry.

When dealing with as many snakes as we do (the '08 breeding season over 400 babies in the house) it's inevitable that some will die, some go out rather "normally" and then there is the bizarre.

It's only the really freakish ones that I photograph.

Whenever possible, if I can figure out why they died, I make it a point to share my findings..

Definitely something that should be reminded regularly, as I see the mistake made all the time. But yes I was aware, she measures in somewhere near 7'. That shed measured 8'4". Anybody that has ever tried to measure a Carpet, or other active species for that matter, will know why I say "somewhere near"...

Didnt realise it could be as much as a third - had previously heard 10-15%. Never tried measuring any of my snakes i tend to go by the shed length minus 15%.

Snake skin is very elastic when fresh, therefore it is impossible to quantify how far your shed may be off from the acutal length of your snake. The snake will stretch it out during the shedding process and we stretch it out during unrolling/handling.
