Again that orange and black snake is amazing! The colors are sick. I want one just like that. And you said the orange changes to red when they get older. Sick! Even better! :P

Cheers guys. Holderm do they have many aussie elapids in private collections over there as i have never realy seen anyone post pics or tell stories.
I am going to try and breed both of these. The collett (black and orange) is 4-5 years away from breeding, but the australian copperhead (the first one) is 3 so give him another year or so. Hopefully i will have some stunners from these two.
I love the copperhead as he is just so calm and easy to handle, the same goes with most of my elapidae but of course there are a few i just wont pick up with my hands.
The collett is definetely the favourite when most people see my collection as the colours really pop in real life.

Wow, you're very lucky that they are tame enough to handle. I'd still be too scared to do it though.

I think of elapidae being no different to pythons or boas. If you handle them with respect and dont make any quick or jerky movements they will nearly never bite. I dont want to say wont as i know when you play with fire you will get burnt.
I just love how these guys hardly ever sit still and always put on a good show at feeding time.

I think of them similar but many that I keep would nail you if given the chance. Not many here keep aussie venomous because they are very costly. They all have to be imported and do to their rariety demand high prices. Not venomous but I'd kill for spencers monitors (one day)! They are between $2,500 - 5kea plus shipping from over seas! I love aussie herps but would rather spend my money elsewhere at this point.

Wait are they poisonous? Because our copperhead is....and I dont think they can be much different right?
percey39
03-14-10, 12:09 AM
Yes the australian copperhead is venomous, i do believe they are more deadly than the american copperhead.
I cant believe the australian species are so expensive. I would of only thought that due to the antivenom being fairly uncommon that they wouldn't be a popular choice. Spencers monitors here are so cheap and can't understand that they fetch such a price since breed so readily

Aussie herps are expensive because Australia doesn't allow exports. The people that do have them demand top dollar. Seems everything that gets smuggled out of OZ ends up in Germany. Purchasing anything overseas is usually costly. Eventually I'll keep many aussie species but that's down the road. I'm pretty sure this year was the first year Inland Taipans were available in the US (I'm talking actually available on US soil, already imported). I have never seen copper heads or tiger snakes.... I want to keep tiger snakes personally and I'll be seeking them out once my cobra collection is finished. I hope to get all of the philipine cobras this year along with some really rare africans.

I cant understand our government sometimes. As we are not allowed to keep exotics even though the corn snake is in its 1000's in wild populations already, the same goes with export if they are captive bred then why not export some.
Tigers are an awesome species to keep, they become very docile and some act and climb like pythons lol. I am hanging out for my young ones to become yearlings

it would be great if australia had the same export policy as indonesia.they allow you to take a breeding pair from the wild, then once bred the c/b hatchlings are allowed to be exported.even if the australian goverment only issued a small amount of licenses to established reputable breeders.this would allow more of us to have some of their amazing wild life.i must admit ive often pondered why germany gets all the australian stuff that cannot legally be exported.although i'm not complaining as it makes some really nice snakes available.even if australia gave out breeders to zoo's in all countrys.then maybe the zoo's could let reputable dealers put there name down to be allowed to buy any surplus hatchlings they may produce.i live in hope !
cheers shaun
p.s.i dont think i'm brave enough to keep poisoness snakes mate.
Thanks for the photos....I had no idea that any of the Australian elapids could be handled at all.
percey39
03-17-10, 04:48 AM
Shaun it would be great if we exported some on the sole purpose established and reputable breeders were the given the sole rights to these. It would also be nice if we could import some species as well.
Aphid alot of people will NOT handle elapids at all as its not necessary and extremely risky, but i believe that if you take the right steps and treat them with respect and caution they can be handled. I would not reccomend doing this if you are new to elapid keeping or not confident and dont know the right safety protocols.

Zoo's typically DON'T work with private keepers or the industry as a whole, they would rather keep them in zoo's and that's it. percey, I'm all about elapids! Anyways...beautiful animals I look forward to seeing more pics of the aussie stuff...see if you can slip a few pics of Spencers Monitors to me!!!

london zoo parted with some hatchling diamonds about 3 years ago.i'm chasing one of the males that has just come on the market, from the guy that got it originally from the zoo.its the same all over, its who you know,as the diamond guy knows one of the zoo keepers.if i get the male at least i'll know it came right from the australian government to the zoo,so the blood lines clean.
it was actually a guy from denmark that started the jag thing,we just picked it up and ran with it.i can see why you had a chuckle though percey mate, haha i'll try and get some updated pic's of my lot soon mate.i'm thinking of selling my bredl's to raise more cash to try get that male diamond...!!

Bredli are the second coolest carpet. After diamonds. I wondered if you cross a bredli with a diamond could you get a red diamond? I bet you get some wicked looking snakes.
Will0W783
03-19-10, 08:06 PM
I don't know what you'd end up with. I think it would be reddish, but would retain some diamond patterning, like what happens when you cross a diamond and a jungle. Why don't you try it and find out? ;)
percey39
03-20-10, 02:53 AM
it would not produce anything spectacular in my eyes. It would not really show many characteristics of the bredli and would look mostly like a diamond, but that is just my opinion
shaunyboy
03-20-10, 06:23 AM
a friend of mine prooved his male diamond with a jungle last year.the hatchlings ended up having the basic jugle pattern, head shape and eyes were diamond, took the diamonds deep black.your right percey they were nothing to write home about.but i think when he grows the holback females up and puts them back with dad they will have a lot more diamond influence and look a lot nicer.or maybe even throw them with a jag,ive seen some awsome looking diamond/jungle/jags...!!

Hi guys just thought i would throw up some pictures of one of my baby patternless tiger snakes. This little guy is starting to eat like a champion, he had to be assist fed all the way up untill a couple of weeks ago. I cant wait till the colours come out, they will be golden all over with a black/blue head. The last picture is of one of the other youngsters.

Beautiful snakes percey ! Gorgeous ! you make me soo jealous ! Good idea with the pic thread im gna start one too, will post all of my previous as well as my new pics on there.
Nice snakes. :) That little tiger snake is cute..haha. Austrailian wildlife is so diverse and beautiful, it's a pity, from a hobbiest perspective, that there is no exportation. On the flip side, I do agree with their policy. I like the idea of haveing liscenced herpoculturists breeding WC pairs and selling the offspring though.

Lol... I love it when they get all hissy and don't bite. My hognose throws "hissy fits" all the time but I can reach in and pick him up anyway and he wont' bite. Aren't the tiger snakes venomous- how strong is their venom on people?
percey39
04-05-10, 08:44 PM
Haha sounds just like this guy except i cant just pick him up lol. Tiger snakes are highly venomous, they are number four on the list. I have read somewhere that if you get bitten and the venom goes straight into a vein, that its all over in 3 minutes. I dont know how true this is as i have only read it in a few articals, but i would not like to test the theory.
shaunyboy
04-06-10, 06:25 AM
the snake in the 3rd pic has such a deep black.its pretty awsome that it will eventually turn gold.do you have any pictures of one after going through its colour change ? he also looks like he's got a bit of attitude in that pic mate.

percey39
04-06-10, 06:37 AM
yeah its hard to believe the change as they are going an olivish colour now. I cant wait till it gets to the golden brown. I actually didnt breed these ones sorry shaun, so i dont have pictures of the colour changing. Im sure there is a pic of the sire in that other site in elapid lovers group.
I cant wait till the colour starts to change in mine. I will definetly update you with the pics along the way with mine

04-07-10, 05:13 AM
Hey percey the 3 minute theory is interesting...i read in a book yesterday that a mambas venom can kill in ten..so i dont know how true or relible that is...
percey39
04-07-10, 06:06 AM
Yes it is interesting, i have heard of a few snakes with this potential to kill nearly instantly if they hit a vein (mambas were one of them). I have seen a friends cousin first hand after she was bitten by a tiger while hiking. I can tell you it was not pretty and she has since lost a lot of muscle tissue on her left calf, even after her skin graft. I can believe the theory with the vein, purely because of their rapid muscle destroying toxins. The heart would not appreciate the venom at all.

Just thought i would throw up some pics of one of tigers that has just recently shed. This is one of the same ones in the earlier photos. The colour change is really starting to show now with each shed. I hope you like the difference in colour shaun, i will post pics after every shed if anyone is interested.
percey39
05-08-10, 07:45 PM
Just had to throw a pic of this guy after his shed. He's enjoying a feed, but the copper colour has really started to look unreal. Hopefully breed some of these this year as a friend has a good partner. If its successfull there should be some absolute stunners produced.

the pic's are much appreciated mate, quite a difference.will the one in the second last pictures scales go that copper colour or will they stay the colour they are now but get lighter ? really like that copper colour.
how long now till you get your red scrubby ?
percey39
05-10-10, 02:37 AM
cheers mate. I love the colour the scales have up the middle, but they will slowly change to a lighter shade than the current golden/brown around the neck. It looks like its a half gold/ half copper in real life, its quite odd to look at. I suppose anything can happen though. I hope that particular one of them stays pretty close to how it is now.
The red scrubby should be breeding soon. I cant wait to get my hands on a male. I will send you a link to see the one im talking about.
I am also picking up another two ( possibly 3 ) baby death adders next monday. One is a barkly's and the other is djarra locale. I will post pics as soon as i get them.

Beautiful snakes but openly discussing the free handling of elapids is a recipe for disaster. Folks these are gorgeous snakes but in NOW WAY is free handling an elapid or ANY hot snake a good idea. You yourself may not worry but you may prompt someone to get killed. Folks there is equipment available for this. Not trying to flame you but I keep a few hots and DO NOT get in range EVER. Think of all the trouble we as herpers are dealing with now. Some kid in Florida gets choked because of stupid parents. Now we have congress trying to screw us all. Now say some kidm in Georgia reads this and goes out and grabs a copperhead or pigme rattler, has a serious allergic reaction and dies. Then what?
percey39
05-11-10, 02:39 AM
I completely understand your views and many others on this subject. I have in NO way suggested others do this. I always use a hook and i would have it no other way, sure there are some that COULD be picked up by hand, but that is out right stupidity. A venomous snake is not to be taken lightly. One false step could be your last.
Yes i regret ever mentioning free handling as it has only bought me grief and i whole heartedly accept that this could possibly encourage others to do this. To those comtemplating doing this PLEASE refrain from doing so.
Terence
05-11-10, 10:40 AM
Right on, once again, I was not trying to start something up just trying to error to the side of caution. Have done some things with hots I won't do again, just don't talk about them publicly. At least here in the US. With several politicians trying to make a name for themselves at our expense, it is a touchy subject.
cheers

Beautiful. I have heard they are a fairly calm snake. Their name being somewhat of an Overkill. True?
Freebody
05-18-10, 03:44 PM
i was watching on tv that they get their name because in the wild they like to live close to humans and they will hold their ground and make no movement and take no invasion to what they call their personal space, combined with their fast acting poison they cause the most amount of deaths down under than any other snake.and they have one of the fastest stike out of all snakes. i believe the show was called 10 most deadly urban animals or somthing,, so they could have just hyped it up for tv.

Yeah, those shows typically offer little useful information IMO. As you put it, they "hype it up" to sell advertising time slots. Figured I would ask a keeper.

05-19-10, 03:44 AM
These guys are considered docile as they are not a very active snake. They prefer to hide and lure their prey with their tails. I would not like to go near an adder while they are caudal luring, as they wiggle their tail lure to attract prey (it looks like a worm wiggling) These snakes are one of the fastest striking (if not the fastest) in the world. I believe it takes only 0.1 of a second for them to go from being dead still to biting, envenomating and back to still, this is quite literally a blink of eye.
As for the show you were watching saying they cause the most deaths here is untrue. I believe the tiger snake has killed the most people here, as they have four out of five of the toxins in their venom that will kill you and live quite close to rural towns feeding on the mice in hay sheds and dairy farms.. Also the death adders only bite because they dont flee when human interaction occurs, as they rely on their camoflage and being hidden to avoid you. Most bites occur when people step on them.
A bite from a death adder takes roughly 24 hours plus for it to hit its actual peak. Prior to hitting its peak you will have localised swelling and irritataion. Without antivenom its a 50-50 chance of survival.

thx for the correction.thats why i made a comment and stated i seen it on tv :P because i was curious what the truth really was. So the show was right that they have the fastest stike 1 thing right on the whole segment is pretty good for the average tv show lol how sad is that.
percey39
05-20-10, 03:04 AM
Now you really do have some taste terence coastal taipans are a favourite of mine. Great looking snakes especially the red/orange or black ones, but i still find inlands look a little better and usually have a slighly better temperement.
T.V shows have also let me down on many occasions freebody. I used to really think females were nice and friendly to us all, but how that show led me so far astray i have no idea:yes:
Plus one out of the many facts they said isnt too bad. Some of the rubbish we get fed about anacondas and king cobras blow my mind. I dont know how they think they can get away with so much verbal diarrhea here. I suppose it will never affect anyone here at least as we cant keep either species, but could cause dramas if some were to travel and take these shows seriously.

Unfortunetely i dont think the red missile is going to happen any more. I spoke to the person quite recently after reading about a theft up that way. Seems that someone stole pretty much his entire collection whilst he was moving house.

09-21-10, 06:53 PM
They are overseas, but due to our laws stating that no specie be exported or imported it makes them very expensive. I was talking to guy from germany the other day about this species and he said he paid 2500 euro for his male and little bit more for his female. I can ubderstand them being expensive, but never thought that they would be that price. As they have established breeders breeding them very regulary but obviously demand far out weighs their supply.
Over here you can pick one up for as little as $200 australian.
percey39
09-21-10, 06:58 PM
Cheers Chuck he is getting bigger quite quick now, mostly getting the typical chubby adder look lol.
There are king cobra's, rattle snakes and all sorts of retics, burms, anaconda's and various other species available here. I was offered a green anaconda a year or so ago for $400, which is fairly cheap but if you are caught with any exotic species you can kiss your collection goodbye, your license revoked, a court date and a fine or jail time. So i would not buy any till they became legal as its far too much to lose im opinion.

ya for sure, nothing is worth getting your collection taken, im sure we all feel the same about are snakes.....they are members of the family. $2500 for that snake, i could see that for sure, i know a guy who paid close to that for an albino king cobra a few years back, snakes in general in canada are 75% of the time much more than other places but we have a few snakes that are cheep that cost alot more other places, my bella girl cost me 2 k here a few years back, in the states at the same time around 7500

Yeah its expensive when you think 2,500 euro is pretty close 3,400 canadian for a hatchy!! I would imagine with your weather that the tropical species would be hard to keep and even arid species too?

She's still the same unfortunately, however she is still eating fine/gaining weight so I'm sure she isn't uncomfortable in any way. Think she is about 24g now
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:24 AM
Awww Aaron Lumi is stunning! Looking very silvery and beautiful, most definately my favourite
percey39
09-22-10, 09:27 AM
Oh she is very pretty, i love the purple checkers on her side and the nails really bring out her colours so they do. Thats good to hear that she is putting on weight and eating well as thats a good sign she is feeling better.
Lumi is such a pig lol i will let him know that he is your favourite, but will have to speak oh so quitely or else i will have sad and depressed snakes.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:30 AM
Unfortunately it's not that great of a sign as she has been eating the entire time :(
Saw a different vet about her a couple of days ago and he has put her on a different antibiotic and has suggested I make a steam box for her, I've put her in it a couple of times but I'm not too sure how effective that's going to be due to the long respiratory tract.. What do you think?
percey39
09-22-10, 09:32 AM
Hmm what do you mean by steam box. Is it just a hot and high humidity box? If so im not to sure that would be that great of an idea as they are not from those conditions in the wild.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:34 AM
High humidity, I'm very skeptical but I'll try anything. Might see what Wayne thinks also on the matter
percey39
09-22-10, 09:36 AM
Yeah Wayne would be your man, but i would highly doubt that making her sit in those conditions when she has a RI would be that great of an idea. I would of thought it would only make things worse.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:39 AM
Just sent him a message, well like I said I'm willing to try anything as she's has this for over a month now. Got her a nice big heat lamp today so I'm going to do a dry run with that in the big viv to see what sort of temperatures I can hold down when I go back home as I'm sure she isn't too fond of being back in the nursery
percey39
09-22-10, 09:42 AM
My juvie scrubby took over 2 months to get over hers, but there were other complications. As long as you keep giving her injections she will heal. I would try not to disturb her too much other than giving her injections, food and water for a while.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:45 AM
Yeah I haven't been getting her out much at all since she's been unwell, other than feeding/injecting of course. I feel bad giving her these injections :( hopefully she'll be more responsive to this antibiotic
percey39
09-22-10, 09:46 AM
I hope so too, its very stressful when you know they are feeling a bit down.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:50 AM
Very stressful indeed, especially when in theory she shouldn't have got unwell in the first place. Still at a loss as to how she managed to get pneumonia in a very hot house and a nice warm viv
percey39
09-22-10, 09:53 AM
Yeah did you lose power or know if you might of? it does seem odd if all was good with her temps and everything.
How is your search going for moo? I see you found a carpet that likes you lots haha i bet you were just a little tempted to get him after that much affection!!
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 09:59 AM
Not looking at the moment, I want to make sure Lola is 100% before getting another snakey. Lol yeah the lil guy seemed to like me more than the shop assistant for sure, went for her a couple of times before settling down around my arm, he had the most adorable little face! If Lola was fine I would of taken him home with me without a second thought.
Nope no loss of power, good ambient temperature so I really am at a loss :sorry:
percey39
09-22-10, 10:04 AM
Thats fair enough, but i would buy more snakes as thats just what i do lol. I cant help myself, as long as i can care for them they mine, mine i tells ya.
Hmm thats really strange for her to develope such an illness with no real reasons behind it. Maybe fluid on the lungs? im not sure but i got very ill and developed very minor pneumonia and stayed in hospital for a few days because of that.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:07 AM
The only thing I can think of is where we moved the viv into the front room it's opposite the door to the balcony, now when I'm home I make sure the door is not left open, the only thing I can think of is that Mark had the doors open for a couple of days and she got cold. I've told him since so if that was the problem it most definately will not be happening again
percey39
09-22-10, 10:12 AM
Hmm possibly but if you have a thermostat and heat light/pad/ceramic it would of still givin her a hot spot in her tank though. Has she had x rays as fluid on the lungs is a slim possibility.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:19 AM
Nope the vet hasn't suggested anything like that as of yet, I guess we'll have to see the outcome of this load of antibiotics and take it from there
percey39
09-22-10, 10:21 AM
Thats all you can do, has Wayne got back to you about the steam box yet?
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:23 AM
Yeah, he didn't mention anything about it being uneffective but he did say raise the temperature. Hopefully the wattage I went for should be okay in the exoterra, do you think a 60W for a 40x60cm will be okay? Or shall I go for a stronger bulb?
percey39
09-22-10, 10:26 AM
Yeah i know to give them a little more heat, but dont think humidity is a good thing to do. 60 watt should be heaps you could get away with a 40 watt in a tank that size. How high off the ground is the globe?
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:27 AM
The lamp sits on top of the mesh so about 60cm
percey39
09-22-10, 10:29 AM
Yeah 60watt should be sweet to get you to around 34-36 degree's celcius on the floor of the tank.
percey39
09-22-10, 10:33 AM
Oh nearly forgot, hows your plans going for a holiday to down under?
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:35 AM
Excellent, that was what I was aiming for. Do you think I should maintain the temperature overnight but just ensure I have a lot of hides?
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 10:37 AM
We're shopping about at the moment, however Mark and I are going through a bit of a rough time at the moment so meh, not so urgent
percey39
09-22-10, 10:37 AM
I would keep those temps 24/7 and give her a few hides. Just check that you still have a nice cool spot for her to hide as well.
Sorry to hear!!
percey39
09-22-10, 10:43 AM
Oh i also forgot about the adder country photo's you going to put up in your england thread. I wanna see what im missing out on over there!!!

Just a thought with pneumonia - it isn't caused by cold necessarily. It is more of an infection than someing caused by getting cold. Cold could cause hypothermia which could lead to pneumonia because of the damage to the lungs but i dont think you can get it just from being cold??
Freebody
09-22-10, 02:23 PM
i think your right, I never had hypothermia, but i have gotten pneumonia a few times from getting the flu, and then just staying outside in the elements day after day untill it cause broncitis, then it cause pneumonia to set in later. maybe it had some RI that you didnt notice first. I got my fingers crossed everything works out and she makes a speedy recovery.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 03:28 PM
Thank you everyone :)
Not too sure about her having an RI that's progressed, I took her to the vet the day after she started presenting symptoms. I get her out most days and hadn't noticed any changes in behavior at all, very strange indeed.
.: Laura :.
09-22-10, 03:29 PM
On the adder front, sorry for lack of pictures Aaron but the camera on my phone has been broken so I haven't been able to take pictures, however I'm now using someone elses old phone so I'll get on it for you :)

I look forward to seeing some pics Laura, thanks.

I am really excited at the moment as i have heard there are babies for the species i want but i am unsure how many he has. Hopeully there are plenty so i can add another 8 to the family. My fingers are crossed!!!

So i would not buy any till they became legal as its far too much to lose im opinion.
do you need a license to own a snake in the u.k.???
percey39
10-08-10, 04:09 AM
Im in Australia mate. You need a basic license for owning most python species and a advance license to own hot's and the rest of our native pythons( native to Australia, we cant keep any exotic species ) not covered in the basic.
