Hi all, i recently put my carpet into a new tank about 900x400x500. I think she is enjoying the extra room to move around but everytime i go to take her out she is very resistant and seems a little cranky so i dont pester her. She has only been in the new tank for about 5 days. She gets fed regularly, has sufficient heat and a place to bathe. So i'm asking what should i do or be looking out for?

any advice appreciated

Cheers

has your carpet fed since you moved it into a bigger tank ? the reason i ask is if a snakes nervous or stressed they will stop eating.snakes can get stressed if you put them in too big a tank.the space can make them nervous which can cause stress.

I always give my snakes two whole weeks of no handling when i`ve moved them to a new tank, just as I do when I buy a new snake. It may be that he`s just a little insecure just now in his new tank. Saying that, Carpets can be very snappy when they`re young, they seem to gain a confidence out of thin air once they`re a decent size though, although there are execptions. Have you got plenty of hide spots in there? I usually provide two hides and an area of fake greenery just thrown on the floor so they can go under it. But as Shaunydude says, if he`s that stressed out he won`t eat, either way, I`d leave him be for a couple of weeks if you can, let him gain a bit of confidence with his new enclosure..... :)

as feebo said mate plenty of hides.make sure you have them in both the hot and cold end of your tank.a nervous snake will hide in an area too hot just to get away from you.this aint good for the snake.i have a jungle/jaguar that was slow to start feeding due to being very nervous (its just her nature).i got her feeing after 9 months.to this day she has never missed a feed.her tank looks like the place i store all my spare hides as it has so many in it for her.she still only sneaks out in the dead of night and makes sure shes hidden away before sun up.the ironic thing is i bought her as a display snake and only my wife and i ever get the chance to see her.
follow feebos advice and things should work out just fine.

hi thanks for the advice guys. She is still feeding as per normal and has been fed twice since being in the new tank. I don't have a hide spot as such, yet, but i do have a towel over one corner where she likes to hang out on her hot water bottle lol. Just so it creates a dark, secure place for her to hide. anyway i will try leaving her for another week or so and see how she is. thanks again

shes eating, thats great so it dont appear to be stress.sounds like feebo was bang on the money with hides.she may be feeling a bit vulnerable with all her new found open space.try putting a few more hides in as she may only be at her hot end as its the only dark secure and safe feeling spot she has.nervous snakes have been known to over heat and cook themselves in a hot hide rather than feel vulnerable out in the open.even if you made her a few hides out off what you have lying around until you get proper ones.

Yeah hides are easy dude :) Plastic boxes, cardboard tubes (chuck when soiled) a washing up bowl upside down with a hole in it, a cardboard box... ANYTHING! lol I don`t want to sound alarmist but only offering a towel as security for any snake, let alone a Carpet python is asking for trouble. Fill that tank with all manner of improvised hides and I expect you`ll see a small miricle of confidence in that snake. A towel over one end is useless because what the snake wants is to squeeze itself into a small space, it wants to feel the walls of that small space close around it, that is what is meant by secure as far as snakes are concerned. Your snake will do a whole world better once you`ve given it what it needs in that respect......
