Keeping up with the Naja train I picked up this stellar pair from Tom Crutchfield. This is the largest pair I have ever seen! The female is possibly gravid now and Tom has said they have been breeding at his facility. I need a new lense as I can't get to close to them or I'd be in some trouble! I can't get over how large they are! I need to tube and accurately measure them but they are both 6ft+! Hope you enjoy:

The male in the bottom pic hit the glass and left 2 perfect lines of venom all the way down to the bottom. These are some very pissy snakes! If I walk by or look in their cage they hood right away when they see me. If I open the door and hook them they begin an awesome show of striking and hissing! It's ashmed you don't see these guys around to often anymore also!

Fascinating. They're very beautiful snakes. Would it be possible for you to get a video of them?

I don't think my D40 has video and I don't have anything else. Maybe one day...

I was watching a tube video about Mambas the other day, the keeper said that the fangs were shed during the shedding process so he needed to be careful not to catch his finger on a shed fang?! Why would they shed thier teeth? I mean, it`s not skin....
Also he mentioned something I hadn`t thought about when looking after venomous snakes, venom left around the enclosure. How do you deal with that? :)

Very carefully! You must be aware of any open cuts. A venomous snake needs it's fangs so they are just like shark teeth, generally there is one behind and ready to take it's place. It's a real treat when you find them but many times they just get thrown away when cleaning an enclosure. I don't usually mess with any of the substrate with my hands, I have a dust pan for that. The main problem with venom in the enclosure is that if you come into contact with it enough you can develope an allergy to it which could later down the road cause an allergic reaction weather your bitten or not.

when you find shed teeth do you have to boil them, steep them in something to make them safe ? or does the poison just evaporate through time rendering the teeth safe ? please excuse my ignorance i have not had much dealings with poisoness snakes.
cheers shaun

p.s. their hoods are something else mate, awsome !

Aaaaaah the fang itself is shed, I was picturing a skin layer coming off ! lol Good point Shauny, do you dispose of your substrate in a normal bin? Or being as it`s potentially dangerous, I suppose you must make some sort of other arrangements? :)

I just dispose of the mulch normally. If I'm lucky enough to find a fang it's placed in alcohol and left for a few days.

So have you ever found a fang? If you have, maybe you could take a picture for us? :)

Nope, I had it in my pocket at work showing some friends and misplaced it. I actually poked my finger with it and had a weird reaction. Slight pain and minor swelling. The fang had sat in alcohol for atleast a week prior. It's alot larger then a normal needle so it could of just been a larger sharp object causing the symptoms. Still gotta be careful, that could of been a bad situation!
