Masubius my eastern flame garter snake just shed tonight, and her colors are just more stunning every shed.

She did not want to hold still or cooperate much while I took pictures.

Look close there is a big radix on the other side of that glass.

Wow that's awesome looking. Now why can't that kind of garter come trapesing through my yard instead of all the other ones i get!

Very nice garter, what are you feeding him in the bowl?

I changed the water bowl when I picked up the shed, the thing you see in the water is a hunk of repti bark.

She eats fuzzy mice.

Once in a while some cut up salmon for a treat.

Thanks for asking Jason.

Wow, she's really pretty! I have a (probably rather dumb) question. Do captive bred garter snakes smell like the wild ones do? I used to catch them all the time in my back yard and they always smelled like piss. Some of the varieties you can get are really pretty, but I wouldn't want them if they'd smell like the ones I catch outside..lol.

That smell is not piss, they have a gland called a musk gland, when they are startled and scared, they open up the cloaca and release a foul stench to gag the predator into releasing it.

In captivity, they still musk but not nearly like a wild one would.

I have snakes, the flame included that I can handle all day long, and they never musk.

I have others that fling the musk AT ME when I reach in the cage.

My one water snake flung it right up the glass of a 35 tall hex tank, it went all the way up the whole 18 inches of glass.

Corns, milks, well really most all colubrids have this gland.

Ewww....that water snake must have been a messy sight. My female Pueblan milk used to musk and **** on me when I picked her up. She's stopped now but is still nervous and flighty so I try not to hold her unless it's necessary. I knew it was a musk gland with the garters- I was just wondering if it was a constant release thing or just that wild ones musk because they're scared and captive ones tend to calm down.

They are a relatively odorless pet.

Wow, he is sooo handsome, Wayne. I am digging that deep red on him! Your garter snakes are really incredible. I may have to get one someday...when I have more money and space. I've tied it all up in pythons/boas...lol.

She's one of my favourite snakes. I hope to breed her soon with an albino with hopes of getting some of these....

Really amazing red sides on your garter snake... Eastern Flame? Since you plan on breeding her soon --- what are the genetics like in terms of this one (recessive or?) (I have minimal understanding of Garter Snake Genetics so be easy on me? )

Ty!

The flame gene is a simple co-dom, I could breed her with any sirtalis sirtalis, (Hybridization is highly frowned upon in the Thamnophis trade) male and get a percentage of flames in the litter.

Put two flames together and get an all flame litter. There is no such thing as a "het for flame" either they are red, or not..

Cross a flame with an erythristic and get this..... (unfortunately another female, so I can't cross these two) as she ages the scales on the back of the snake gradually turn more red. This gal gets redder and redder with every shed, I also had her brother, he was more of an orangish red, but he passed away at 5 months old.

I actually love co-doms since its pretty straight forward..... I'd love to be on the 'list' when you have your litter.... I have a checkered albino unsexed baby and will be hoping to add to the group eventually (and a ribbon but he/she is another story! lol)

Amazing colors! I'm hooked just on the pics already!

Wow! They really are the prettiest garters I've ever seen! If i could not focus on carpetand and hogs for a minute, I'd prolly be in trouble because just about every garter i have ever seen is utterly beautiful, especially those flames.:Wow:
