Retics have the wickedest patterns and colors, if only they stayed small..

And that looks to be a male, judging by the length of the tail. Retics are hard to tell though.

That's a pretty decent birthday present. I hope I get snakes for my b-day:)

Hey Jim,
Glad to see that you got him. Now you just have to breed him with mates that will best exploit his color and pattern.
Take it easy, Brian

So find another silver, or test him out with a tiger, or albino?

If it's a male,.. all of the above. If it's a female, I would start with another silver like that,. get a bunch of silver babies and then devote the best looking offspring to multiple tiger/super/albino and other morph projects. Brian

Honestly, I don't really want to contribute to the retic problem. I want to maybe breed it just to add it to the species I have bred. People that deserve to own retics are far and few between, and getting rid of a ton of babies is just not ethically right. This in no was means I am qualified to own one...

I agree with you totally JKUROSKI!!!! I just wish more Burm/Retic breeders shared your thoughts!!

First of all,
Congrats to you on your new "baby" !!

AND I too agree.

You see...

I have a rescued 5 1/2' Retic in my herp room right now !

He came to me with around 7 inches of his skin near his tail missing !!! All the way around too.

He was no larger than a roll of quarters in his thickest places, and i thought his tail was already dead flesh.

When i slid him into the enclosure he hit the glass no less than 10x before i could get away so he would stop.

...8 to 9 monthes later,
The missing section of his skin is down to 2" to 31/2" and he/she is almost the appropriate girth for his length which increased by nearly a foot already.

I am NOT looking for any applause etc, merely sharing the truth
about what happens sometimes.

So thanks J. Kuroski and Jeff Favelle for speaking and living the truth !!!

...and oh yeah his/her tail is wriggley and healthy .

JKUROSKI: great looking retic.

Quakezombie: It is frightening on how some people treat animals.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone here. I actually agree with you all about these things and that it shouldn't ever happen. But I seriously doubt if every mistreated and rescued snake is the result of too many breeders producing them. I think that it's just the unfortunate fact that there are jerks out there that don't respect the animals and don't properly take care of them. I personally will never sell any snake to anyone that isn't a decent reptile keeper that will take care of the snake they are getting from me. I couldn't have that on my conscience. Unlike pet stores who will sell to anyone and everyone with a hundred bucks in their hand. They don't care what happens to the snake, only that they make money.
Also, another little point I would like to make. I only breed morphs and other more expensive type animals for the serious collector or zoos. When someone is shelling out one to three thousand dollars per snake, I honestly think there is a much better chance that this snake will be well cared for and not mistreated and eventually ditched in the woods.
That's all I wanted to say. Brian

Ohh i totally agree about the morphs etc.
Too costly to throw away ,i like the way it helps the animal.

I didnt mean to sound argumentative at all.
I just felt compelled to mention my little refugee.

Here are some other pics I took. I also got struck at for the first time. Was kinda wierd, but I saw it coming from a mile away. I had taken it out of it's enclosure to give it a bath. It was fine just kinda soaking and moving around. Then all of a sudden the soaking stopped and it was focused directly toward me. Eyes were locked on and focused. I have put a towel, and my hand in front of its face in the past and I can pet her head without trouble. This time I knew it was gonna strike. There was just something about the way it was looking at me. Presented the towel, and wam, what I think was a closed mouth attack. Very interesting?

When you really study the scales and colors of a Retic, they are simply the prettiest snake in the world. Too bad about their size.

I don't think any of us will get sick of looking at this snake. The new pics are just wicked!

I agree about what Jeff said. Too bad about their size, but mainly for my purposes:) If they only got 7 or 8 feet I get some, but I just know I don't have what it takes to care for them.

Hey Jim,
Yeah, closed mouth strikes are not too uncommon. I call them "bluff strikes". My ARP's used to do it a lot but have calmed tremendously in the last year. My interpretation of this is just that they are uncertain as to whether you are a threat or not and they just want to scare you. When you don't go away and they are not harmed they soon stop acting that way. Hope this helps. Brian

I agree, and it was picked up out of the tub seconds afterwards with no recourse. I must have just been too intimidating lurking over it while it was in the water. Maybe it felt as if it was less secure because of the water?

Brian Smith
12-30-02, 02:20 PM
I would think being in water might make him more secure. No, I think it might have more to do with the lights. If the lights are behind us then we are just a massive, looming silloette. Are the lights in your bathroom behind you when you face the tub?

JKUROSKI
12-30-02, 09:49 PM
Yes definately...very good observation for not even being there. And in fact the angle from the tub to the ceiling light probably made me look exactly how you described.

Nice work Quakezombie!
Something similar happened to me, I ended up with a very nasty dwarf retic. I'm glad everyone is so sensible here, considering you have to be a little nuts to keep retics in the first place. ;)
Gorgeous snake JKUROSKI, hope you enjoy it!

I actually got rid of it already...It was hard, but I got a great deal for two green burms. Sorry Kolleen. I think I'm going to get a pair of dwarfs off of Mike Wilbanks this year though.

Man!!! I can't believe you got rid of that retic!!!!!!!!!!! I was just commenting to my wife about the pics of it at the beginning (something to the effect of "I would LOVE to have a retic like that!!"). Oh well, I guess they truly are not for everyone. Good luck with those burms.
