View Full Version : My Carpets
Hi, I`m new to the forum and thought I`d start off by showing you my Carpet pythons.
This is "Magic" My Jungle Carpet. She`s quite highly strung but is improving as time goes by....

Here she is looking quite mean with her dinner...

Her mate is called Arni, he`s a nine foot Jungle Jaguar who I`ve yet to get a decent full picture of. Here he is....

I thought I had some better pictures of him somewhere, I`ll have a look. I`ll probably do some new photos soon anyway. So that`s Magic and Arni.... Who would you like to see next? Common Boas? Blood pythons? Hognoses? I have a huuuuge female Rainbow boa measuring in at eight feet ! Who shall I showcase next?

Hello and welcome! :Wow: Those are some sweet looking snakes. Let's see your rainbow and bloods next. Jungles, blood, and rainbows are my favorite snakes.:)
Cheers :) OK, Rainbows and Bloods it is..... I think I`ve got some photos here already actually :D
nice carpets, one of the best looking non venomous snakes...
Couldn`t agree more :) Cheers. If I was brave/crazy enough, my favourite hot snake is the Gaboon, they`re gorgeous... but I`m not that brave. I`m after a Malagassy Hognose soon, that`s about as brave as I get I think......

Carpets are definitely my next addition for one of the reasons I keep 'Tics (I have more than one reason I keep them).. Their patterns are simply awesome to me and I like the fact that it encompasses their head. I just have to do some more research on them as far as whats the advantages and disadvantages of various localities and the differences between them. I have heard (and seen) people that keep carpets together. I learned early on it better to keep your collection separate unless breeding. Is this the norm with them? I had two 7 month old 'Tics together for about a week or so till I found the one a home and it was difficult to trust them when I had to interact because they worked as a team together. Not good when they're are inherently cage aggressive.
Sorry for the rant.. I mainly wanted to stop by and look at your carpets and feel you deserve a compliment on them.. they are awesome looking!!
I'm now going to get on the phone and call 1-800-CARPETS and see whats on special! (thats suppose to be a funny haha)
LOL Well.... You`ll find a lot of people will tell you never to keep more than one snake in a viv for some very valid reasons.... However, some people do keep thier snakes like this and I`m one of them, done carefully, ie don`t feed them together and let them calm down before you put them back together, it is perfectly possible. I have a pair of Common Boas together, A Jungle Jaguar and Jungle Carpet, Royal pythons and Hognoses. It`s perfectly possible to do. Just look into it, explore both sides of the argument and see what you`re happy with, I`m happy to answer as many questions as you can throw at me :)
I`d just like to mention that I actually left a snake forum because of arguments about this subject, I`d rather not get into an argument with anyone here. We all have slightly different opinions on snake keeping, I`d have thought that was acceptable but I ended up being talked to in a manner that I didn`t consider acceptable, so I left. Luckily, I found this place :)

Speaking for myself, I'll never tell anyone how to do something unless they ask. Doesn't stop someone from offering a suggestion however. When it comes to housing snakes together I feel that's their business. I was merely bringing up the topic cause I've seen more than one person that kept Carpets keep them together. I for one dont do it cause I have found with my guys their is a much better feeding response when they are kept in their own digs. I've had too many refusals outside of the box. The people are friendly here from what I've seen. So unless your doing something downright dumb.. I think you'll get along just fine.
Thank you for the offer in information/education of the breed. When i move my big guy into something else I'll have an enclosure available... and who wants an empty enclosure laying around lol.

lol so true!
P.S. I love the picture of the carpet eating its dinner, those teeth are amazing looking lol
Empty tanks ! LOL That`s how I ended up with thirty odd snakes that is ! lol :D Well I`m glad the topic of keeping multiple snakes together has come up actually,I shouldn`t presume every forum would contain rude arse trolls but I did worry. I was glad to see a few welcomes in my hello thread, that`s always a good sign ! :) It certainly seems a nice friendly forum so far I must say. :) I`m glad I found this place, it would have been a real shame not to have continued looking for a forum to call home. Being so interested in snakes and having so many, I want to share! lol I`ve got favourite forums for my other hobbies, astrophotography and tropical snail keeping so it`s about time I settled down in a snake forum.....

I heard as long as it's not two males it's ok. I did learn the hard way years ago when i first got into snake you shouldn't keep boas an pythons together. I was told by a pet store sale person it wouldn't hurt. I had build a huge cage an put 4 balls and two boas in it.(separated them at feed time) one boa had IBD (Boid Inclusion Body Disease) it killed them all. It is twice as deadly to python as boas. It wasn't till year later i found out that's what killed them all. A very hard leason learn. I believe in keeping a open mind to different opinions. You never know what you might learn. Some people have strong believes about how to do things, but that doesn't them right. I think you'll find people around here are pretty open minded. That's why this my favorite forum.
Cool, that`s good to hear, it`s nice to have a snakey forum to come to now :) I wouldn`t keep Boas and Pythons together, only ever a breeding pair of one species. Saying that, I`ll keep two female Corn snakes together or two males but I`d keep a close eye on what was going on in the tank, especially with the males, it`s fairly easy to tell if it`s not going to work out. But the points people make about illness spreading are of course correct, that`s a risk I take, if I get a really nasty illness, both snakes in the tank will get it. As for feeding, I don`t have any problems with snakes attacking each other at all. Maybe if I didn`t know what I was doing I might but as I say, there are valid points on each side of the argument, it`s just a case of deciding what you`re personally happy with. :) Looks like I`ve got a new snake coming soon ! I`ve just about convinced my wife I should have a Giant Malagasy Hognose in the snake room lol

alright mate, hello from sunny scotland.nice carpets you have there.i too keep pairs of carpets in the same viv (never 2 males).like yourself mate i have no problems at all as long as i feed them in seperate containers then give them time to calm down.the one problem i have come across if i dont wash my hands properly before putting them back in the viv is ive been mistaken for food and had a nip or two.
all the best shaun

Very nice snakes, Morelias are my favourite to
Hi guys :) sorry, I missed these two posts ! Yeah I`ve never had problems keeping a pair. The female is really feisty too lol Actually I was going to ask a question... When palpating a snake looking for eggs, usually it`s not too difficult. Carpets though, being very muscular aren`t so easy, how do you guys do it? I don`t want to apply too much pressure but I also don`t want to miss the fact she`s gravid and have the male trample the eggs.....
I just took a fairly nice picture of Arni, my 50% Jungle Jaguar. :) You might notice I fed him recently lol he had a huuuge rat. Actually I forgot to mention.... When I feed him, he changes colour ! By quite a lot too, he goes pink :) I figure maybe when his blood gets flowing in excitement it shows through his light coloured scales, has anyone else noticed this with Jungle Jags?

A 9ft Jungle Jaguar?? Impressive!!
Yep, spot on nine feet :) He`s a monster ! He`s just so tame you wouldn`t believe it though, unlike the female, she`ll land one on your nose if you don`t keep an eye on her lol :D I`ll post a picture of me holding him for scale soon, I`ve actually done that already but every picture my wife took was blurred ! All fifty five of them lol oh dear.... :)

i usually seperate them after they have locked a good few times.the only safe way i can think of to determine if she's got eggs is a trip to the vet for an ultrasound.you've got some nice carpets there mate.my diamond jungle has an all white underside and while she constricts right up to a few minutes after shes ate the white scales all go light pink.then it all returns to normal.i'm sure its to do with the blood flow and blood pressure they use while constricting.
That`s the odd thing, he`s not constricting when he goes pink. He see`s food, gets excited and starts stalking it and at this point, goes pink ! lol I got a smart little camcorder for crimbo so I`ll do a feeding video soon and put it on youtube, I should be able to capture it.....
I`ll keep chucking my pictures in this original thread I think, I might as well. I`m photographing my snakes all the time ! lol Here`s Magic looking sexy but with a slightly dry head...

I`ve just spotted a small white patch on him I`ve not noticed before aswell, I`m a bit worried but I`m also not sure whether it was actually there already or not !

I think the fact that the scales in this region look a little dimpled isn`t a great sign. But saying that, the very tips of surrounding scales are white, making it look like it is natural. Not quite sure. I`ll be watching that I think......

Your carpets are really cool! How old is your jungle, and how long? :)
Yeah I can`t say I`ve noticed it before though, odd.... My Jungle, not sure how old she is, I`ve had her about two years and she was about two and a half feet when I got her. She`s over five feet now, not sure by how much..... I`m a little worried about Arni now, he`s upstairs sniffing around his food, bashing it against the glass and breathing quite heavily as he`s all excited. Hmmm..... I don`t like that white patch at all....

Well, just keep an eye on it. If you have a good herp vet, take him in for a check-up. I have a RTB male that I've had for a little over a year. He was tiny when I got him and is now up around 3 feet. About a month ago, I noticed he has a portion of his belly that is all kinked up; it's like his ribs are bent and don't line up. I'm concerned about it being the beginnings of a bone disease, but if so, there's nothing I can do. He's eating, moving and acting fine, and other than the weird look and the knuckle-cracking sound it makes if he bends that area, he seems like nothing is wrong. I'm very concerned too, but all I can do is wait and see. If it gets any worse he's going in to the vet. I don't know if it's something he had all along that wasnt noticeable when he was tiny, or if it's something that recently developed.
Sometimes it's hard to know, and all you can do is wait and see.
I hope Arni is ok; he's a gorgeous snake!
Cheers, yeah I love Arni :) I do have an excellent herp vet yes, I`m seeing her soon anyway so I`ll speak to her and keep an eye on it. There`s actually another little white patch aswell, in the larger one the scales are slightly dimpled. Fingers crossed i`s not a problem....

What Kim said
I love all the pictures, Nice.
I know now what my next python is going to be.
It`s nice to finally be able to show my snakes off :)
Nice snakes. I'm probably picking up a jungle carpet tomorrow - my first one. Right now I have a BP, corn snake, 5 king snakes and a number of other herps. I've been interested in carpets for a while but now found what looks like a great deal on one though I want to see it in person first. Just out of curiosity, for those who feed out of the cage, how do you handle getting the snake back in without irritating the snake and how do you get it out without it associating your hand, or hook, with food ?

Wow! I absolutely love the colours on these guys! They are amazing!!
Cheers :) I do love these guys :) Well in answer to your feeding question, I take the female out of the tank and leave the male in there. She`s the angry one but he`s nine feet long and harder to handle. I take her out and place her in a large secure plastic tote. I do this before I`ve even opened the freezer. Every snake upstairs in the snake room, knows there`s food coming if I even take out frozen rats downstairs. Sometimes they all look at me knowing there`s food coming and I`m only THINKING about feeding them ! lol Anyway, the female comes out, she`s secured, then I defrost the food and feed them. I give them ten minutes after they`ve finished to calm down. I then put my leather gloves on, all this does is stop me jumping, no matter how much you`ve conditioned yourself they can always catch you out sometimes! lol I gently pick her up a hand or two forward of the vent, making sure the snake isn`t kinked near that region. I gently lift her, support her where it`s needed and carefully and calmly let her move into the tank on her own. If she goes for me when I lift her, or makes a fuss at all, I completely ignore it. If I don`t do that it becomes a harassing situation for her immedeatly, a fight basically. So even if she starts getting arsey, I calmly carry on doing exactly what I want to do anyway. I learned that lesson when she started getting big, she`d rear up and really be quite intimidating, there wasn`t much dealing with her in the end and obviously that was no good ! So I had to change the way I was doing things and just accept some damage until she learns I`m not going to go away, but I won`t hurt her. She learned surprisingly quickly and yes, her bite is a bitch. :)
