Side Mounting Heat Pads

What are everyone's thoughts on side mounting heat pads. I bought one at petco and the instructions suggested side mounting the pad on the glass instead of underneath if at all possible. The pad does not get very hot so do you guys think it is ok?

I wouldn't do it, unless you have a background of some sort (cork or foam) that would protect the snake. If the pad gets hot it will heat up the glass and the snake will likely burn itself. IMO, don't take the chance; just put it underneath the tank so you can cover it with bedding.

Ok, the pad is surprisingly mild feeling. I expected it to be alot hotter given that they are often placed outside the tank between a bunch of substrate etc. Seems like heat would barely even get through. Regardless, I have moved it underneath to prevent burns.

My second question is... I have one of the "stick-on" thermometers that go on the outside of the cage. It seemed weird to me to put it outside but it measures between 82-86 when the heatlamp is on during the day and between 75-80 at night when the heatpad is on overnight, but can this really be considered an accurate measurement given is placement outside the enclosure?

Lastly, should just the heat pad under the enclosure be sufficient for overnight or would a ceramic or bluelight bulb be more appropriate for overnight heating? I guess it really depends on how cold it gets at night.

Stick-on thermometers can never really be trusted. IMO, get a digital temp gun. You can get one for around $20 at reptile shows. I have had the stick-on kinds and when I got the temp gun I was shocked to see how far off they were!

As for the nighttime heat, it does really depend on how the temps in the room are. In my snake room, I have closed off the vent so the central a/c doesn't get into that room. Therefore it's regulated by the heat lamps all day and I don't need any lighting or added heat at night. If the temps are dropping below 75 at night in the cage, you should get a CHE or infrared heat bulb.
