ok guys so ive been gone a while, busy with school and stuff... any way, i have a kenyan sand boa and i love her!! but unfortanetly i like expensive hobbies ( my mustang, snakes, and tattooing ) SO im gettng a new snake, the question for you all out there: what kind? my fiance is scared of snakes... im slowly getting her to be aroudn them. i have 2 small dogs, a yorkie and chinese crested ( nother expensive hobbie ) so it can get big enough to hurt them... so retic, red tail, burmese, are out! i was thinking either a albino corn snake, or ball python. ive had balls before so i dont want to do that again, corn snakes are cool but look a lil fast moving for me... what do you guys think, im open to other suggestions to!! pics are always good.... thanks1!!!
i have a brazilian rainbow boa and they are really slender bodied animals and only get about 5-7 feet and about 10 pounds. i have pics of mine all over this forum.. just search "brb" and you will find them. they are known for their rainbow like skin that occurs from microscopic ridges on their scales. they require a lot of humidity and they are tropical snakes obviously from the brazilian rainforests. so their vivs can be very cool looking. other than that im a sucker for any type of boa but you don't want any redtails so maybe some dwarf species but im not that familuar with them.
I'm into corns, amels(albino) are nice for a few bucks more you could get one of these
selectivly bred Amels. Sunglow, Zagtec. sorry for the poor pictures.

i was thinking of an albino corn snake... from what pics and videos i seen they get pretty long. there fast too id rather have a "sluggish"snake... im thinking of a ball pythong...
what the differance between:
hatchling-
juvinile-
adult- ( oviously know this one )
i see these 3 types of balls in the store and im confused about them... thanks guys!!
Hatchling- just born usually considered this until first year and then called yearlings.
Juvinile- older than hatchling but not yet reached sexual maturity.
no matter what snake you get i would find a breeder and not get one from a pet store they are much more expensive at a store and they are usually not taken care of as well.
I like ball pythons but they are too common out there for me.
DAMNIT COY!!!!!! I hate when you post pics cuz it makes me so envious. I hated corns till you decided to post some pics of them. lol. I always thought they were ugly and now i kinda want some.

Hatchling, Juvinile and Adult are terms related to there age/growth. If theyre a hatchling theyre currently around 20 inches and say 6 months old and younger, and juvinle is theyre under 2 ft and are 1 year old/ under breeding age i believe, adult is they are close to theyre max lenth 3-5 ft with corns, and are old enough to breed. Now i could be wrong in terms of ages and lengths in relation to the terms. Im no expert, but thats my understanding of the words.

Yes! And what about Little Kyle....Kyle jr.? lol
I think that ball pythons or brazillian ranbow boas are you best bets.
They are nice looking, don't get too big and they're not some of the speediest snakes, to my knowledge. A breeder would definitly be the best place to get a snake. Once you decide what kind you should ask around on this forum if anybody is a breeder or knows a breeder for the type of snake you are looking for.
Let us know what you decide and then post some pics!

I know of a good breeder here in the US. He is really good with his animals and feeds them all well. he carries just about everything and if he doesn't have it he can get it. pm me if you want his website. He has a lot of nice bp's and he is willing to ship. he will be at a show in indy this sunday if you can make it there.
And what about Little Kyle....Kyle jr.? lol
His name is Tristan by the way lol......I wanted kyle jr. but his mama wasn't very fond of it.

BPs may be common, but there are some fantastic unusual morphs, so if you're wanting something different but easy for the fiancee to get used to, find a good BP breeder & get one of the colorful morphs for her. Lavender albino, coral glow, albino ghost are all pretty if she'd like pretty colors; piebalds are really cool, pinstripes are cool . . . there are so many different morphs! If you don't get a normal het, you will NOT have a "common BP"!

Milk snake? There are some really nice morphs of those, too. They are mostly pretty handleable as well, though I've heard of the occasional bitey one. I snake-sat a milk snake for a friend for two years while he was on a mission trip--it was really fun to watch moving around or burrowing--sometimes we'd see just the tip of his nose or an inch of head poking up out of the substrate, other times he'd be climbing on branches or slithering around . . .
I like the carpet pythons and also the jungle morphs out there. but that is just me........

a milk snake sounds cool, but i already have a snake that lives under her substrate lol. im seriously thinking of getting a ball python, or maybe another sand boa.

I think the piebald is a really cool combo of white & patterned--but I'm afraid we're talking even more $$$! I know what you mean -- I'm falling in love with some gorgeous but very expensive snakes!
Have you showed your lady pics of anything? You might get her more interested in snakes if she gets to help choose something.

yea, my brother has a ball python and she was timid at 1st, but once i got her out of the cage and she seen how she just sort of chilled, she wasnt that afraid. I deff want a male though... gotta watching getting a bigger "vicious" snake at my apt complex... (yes, I KNOW pythons especially balls are not dangerous or vicious, but accouding to my apt comples anything with the words "boa" or python" is dangerous, thus including my sand boa lol)

anything with the words "boa" or python" is dangerous,
Good grief! No differentiation at all among species? *sigh*
Do they do the same thing with dogs? Are ALL dogs vicious?
Limited understanding . . . glad I own my own home!

lol no im really surprised they dont do it with all dogs either... i took my snake to the main office to show them and there like, its still a dangerous snake... im just like whatever.
cant wait till i can buy a house!!!

Now if you were keeping a snake that gets big enough to eat people or that is venomous, I could understand their concern. But ALL snakes? Pretty silly. *sigh*
Owning your own house is great in many ways--but it always comes with other costs, such as repairs that you have to pay for yourself. Still . . . I wouldn't want to live in a rental of any sort nowadays!
Ya Me and my gf are looking to get an apartment and i just don't plan on telling anyone at the complex of the snakes i will be keeping.

haha we are moving to a diff apt complex, and im not telling anyone i have a snake... no point in telling them.
ya it's not like we need to take snakes for a walk. they just stay inside and never bother anyone.

Haha that reminds me of a funny story:
When I went to pick up my snake from his previous owner the security guard guy said that I couldn't park where I did. I said "I'm only gonna be 10 minutes. I just need to go up there *points to building* and pick up my snake. I promise I'll only be 10 minutes" He then said "oh no! the snake is the devil! The snake is evil!" then he continued to give me a long lecture about religion and snakes. I then said "Oh, please let me park here! I'm going to go take the snake out of your building, I'm doing you a favour!" then he said ok and I went and got my snake!! Yay! His previous owner said it was funny when she would take him to the corner store. She would take him in the elevator and find it amusing when somebody would get in the elevator and not realize he was there until the doors were closed.

Oh, I can just see the double-take & reactions! LOL!
Except for me, if I got on that elevator . . .

The reactions can be amusing at times yes. For anyone reading this, it's never a good idea to bring your snake in public like that. It can easily stress the snake out. You're also bringing the animal into someone's space who may be afraid of it, especially someone in an elevator! That's a very small area where they can't escape and someone can have a serious reaction to being afraid. A lot of people have a snake phobia.
Also what if the snake bit someone? There'd be an uproar of public outcry in that building that it should be gone and well it just spreads fear. I prefer to keep my snakes to myself and the chance of mishaps to a very small number.

i know your talking about me and the evavator story; my snake will not bite its the most tame thing in the world. i litteraly feed it out of my hand. and plus i had to go show my apt complex what she looked like.... but i do agree with you, i usuallydont take my snake any where!
Aaron_S
03-08-09, 02:42 PM
I've seen plenty of "tame" snakes and plenty of those "tame" snakes have turned around to bite someone, or at the least, strike at someone. You shouldn't trust an animal that lives off instinct.

look man i dont want to get in a damn argument about my snake, who spends all day with it, and who lives in another country? im pretty sure i know my snake and LIKE I SAID my apt complex owners made me take it up there so they could see it...

I am more concerned with just stating the fact that it's not a good practice to do on a regular basis, or at all, to any new snake owners who may be reading this.

i know bro, i totally understand, like i said tho i had no choice... but i DO agree with you:)

I totally understand what you're saying Aaron and I think that's great advice for anybody/everybody on this forum who happens to read it. It wasn't me who had him in the elevators it was his previous owner. If it makes you feel just a tiny bit better it was one of those apartments where everybody knows everybody, so when they saw her they shouldn't have been surprised.
Cheers,
Ken
