home made misting system

I have been looking around for a good mister and I haven’t found any with a reasonable price, which also has good reviews. I did find a site for a DIY mister that I plan on building during spring break. http://www.trix.com/binx/mister/ (http://www.trix.com/binx/mister/) . I was also looking into using a small pump instead of the one in this design, but the ones that I found to be powerful enough, were way to expensive. if you have any comments or help you could give me, I would appreciate that.

there are some out there u just have to look hard and go to home depot they usually have small pond pumps that work well you might have to vary the design but you can use a cheep submersible pump.

Thank you all for the advice. I am just worried about getting the right kind of pressure out of a cheap pump. I will do some more looking around when I get some free time. I will make something work, i always do. maybe not on the first try but I will figure out something.

From what I've heard there is a valve that you can hook to a tap from your home water supply, and it will do the mist. I've read you can put the timer on it and that will take care of the business.
I bought some cheap, $2 and $5, humidifiers at a yard sale. I see them alot. If you go where the retirement people live you can find them at estate sale often enough.
What I don't care for with the humidifiers is they need refilling too often for my liking. I get calls across town late in the day, and then more around town and I may not get home till late in the evening, and the tank is dry by that time, and the humidity in the closet I have it in is down to 20%. Fortunately my pets don't require high humidity, so I'm covered there, but if I do get a chameleon or something that does I'm burnt, till I get someone to man the pumps or just time how long it takes the first humidifier to run dry, and then turn the timer on the second humidifier to come on when the first one runs dry, and keep a external timer on the first one, that has not built in timer, so it doesn't burn it up, if it can do that when it runs dry.

If I needed big humidity and had a large area I think I'd use the digital timer I have already and hook it up to a pump or valve from the tap, and use the finest mist head I can get at the home depot or lowe's or something, but that would be an experiment, not experience.

If you have a harbor freight in your town they have fairly inexpensive pond pumps, but I don't how well they'd work for this application.
Hydroponics stores sell good pumps. You just need to know how many gallons an hour you want to pump, and the lift it willl be going against, I suppose.

cant you get humidifiers at pet stores? if so what different about a mister?

A humidifier at a pet store would be waaay overpriced.
A humidifier increases the overall mouisture in the air, while a mister sprays a 'mist' of water, haha. The mister will increase the humidty but it leaves everything wet/damp. Many reptiles drink the water droplets from the mist. I hope I explained that well enough..sorry if I didn't.

I saw a fogger, one of those that has the bowl that looks nice and lights up with nice glowing lights, kinda romantic like :), god knows I'd hate my snakes to do without a bit of romance, and it was ten bucks at a yard sale. My cousin, who is the king of yard sales, by his sons statement in a skateboard magazine, yes it's publicized that my cousin is the undisputed king of yard sales :), he said that I could get it for half that if I waited, but I haven't even seen another one, yet.
I'd prefer the fogging to the denser misting. More like a coastal jungle thing :) Plus my snakes can knot to it.... I just need to pipe in some barry white or marvin gaye, or liberati if they're all male...

I ordered some low pressure spray nozzels for irigation use, some T fittings, 1/4" hose, and a small electric pump I found on amazon. The pump is a DC 12V pump with 500L/h flow rate.
Hopefully this set up will work well. I should get all my materials delivered in a week or so. I will let you all know how it works, once I get it all together.

The reason I dont to hook the sprayer up to my home water, because it is well water. Well water is better that city water because it doesent have clorine in it, but it does have alot of minerals in it that leave residue on my glass. The humidifyer is a good idea, but I am an engineering student and enjoy building things. Plus in researching the pump I learned a little about how to figure out what size pump to get. I learned leave that math up the peaple who build pumps. HAHa that stuff is intense.

You'd just want to put the water through a filter or reverse osmosis or something, but snakes and other animals in nature have alot more crap in the water than what yours has.
