View Full Version : silly little sexing question
I spent part of the day researching probing for sexing my 6 year old BP, after finding out that my vet the only one within 3 hours of me anyway wont sex snakes. So I get everything ready and probe him/her take a measurement of how far the probe went which is exactly 1 1/2 inchs. Then I realize Im not for sure how far for a female and how far for a male an its hard one handed to compare to count scales and Alien isnt a nice snake so after about 2 bites I gave up and decided to ask on here. If anyone can help Thank you!

Find someone that knows how to properly do it and show you how. That way you don't happen to injure your snake.
It was done properly of that Im sure. I watched my old vet do it many times then looked it up again to make sure I was doing it correctly. Im just not sure how deep for a male or shallow for a female, as I cant seem to find that when I google. I'm inclined to think male just from the feel of it. Im just not sure, Ill have some help today and should be able to count scales. Just need to know the scale count.
I'm guessing a male, but a measurement is useless when trying to determine the sex of a ball python. What you need to know is how many subcaudal scales deep you probed; females generally probe 2-4 scales, and males 6-10.
TY mykee, that was exactly what I needed to know the scale count was 8. That will help alot when deciding which bp to buy next.
