I got 2.1 100% het pied balls just today.
I took them in to my friends at House of Reptiles in Tigard, OR to be sexed.
Now, I've had it happen before where I thought I got 0.2 ETBs and it turns out to be a 1.1 ETB.
What I received was 1.2 het pieds. I paid for 2.1. I called him to let him know. He was pretty cool about the "don't worry about it, keep it" deal, so basically, I got a 0.1 het pied for $40.
Holy moly. Now if they prove out, I'm golden.

Whoopee! You are going to have fun!
This should be a lesson to everyone to learn how to sex animals properly, or at least have them sexed before selling them!
CongraTulations.

Mykee, we can't have that. I won't benefit if everyone did that :D
Although I HIGHLY hope you're awesome at it ;)
Aaron, I was shown how to both pop and probe and I prefer popping. It's quite simple; you see a hemipenes, it's aboy . You don't, it's a girl. Not rocket science.
I'm going to quadruple pop all yours before you get them, might even throw in a male in when you should be getting a female to keep you on your toes so pay attention.....

I now have that in writing so to the BOI we go :P
I do trust you. I learned how to do both but I haven't done either in some years. I preferred to probe, it was easier for me, less difficult to screw up for me at least.

ARrrghgh! You guys live too far away! I want to learn how to sex these animals, too! I've _assumed_ that my BP is a male simply because I don't think the store from which I bought it would be selling females--I'm assuming the breeder would have kept those for sale elsewhere or for future breeding. Or maybe not? What do I know? Nothing!
Wish Michael could show me how to sex my snake . . . I'm a little leery of the probing thing--wouldn't it be easy to injure the snake?
"Wish Michael could show me how to sex my snake "
Lady!! I don't think anyone has ever been so forward with me, maybe we should exchange nude pictures first and then maybe dinner, but to blurt that out on an open forum..............gets me kinda excited....
Popping is so simple to do, and in my opinion, (I've done both) far less intrusive therefore making the "popper" less apt to make an error that will render your males eunichs.

One: go visit your favorite herp shop. Everyone should have a good relationship with some one there. OR, join a herp society. Either one of these should have someone knowlegable enough to show you.
Two: If one isn't an option, and this doens't always work, watch closely when your bp poops. You might have to see a few times. On occasion, the pooping will express the hemipenes a bit. This is COMPLETELY hit and miss and may never work, but my d'alberts used to do it all the time.

ROFL!! Michael, I'm glad that you're not one of those "easy" guys who wants to skip dinner and head straight for bed! Of course, I'm sure you would think I'm far too old to be any fun . . . ;-)
Erik, it's clear that I'm going to have to clear a couple of hours to drive up to Oklahoma City (OKC) where the nearest, and I think only, herp shop in Oklahoma is (an hour's drive). My other option is to go to Dallas, Texas (only about a three-hour drive, and I have good friends there) sometime. There used to be another herp store in OKC that my sons & I liked, but they went out of business a couple of years ago.
Now as to your second suggestion, Erik--in all my years of keeping snakes, I have never been "fortunate" enough to see one poop! Ah, well!
I've joined the OKC herp society, which meets at the zoo in OKC; again, a drive, but oh, well. I can still afford to drive! Their next meeting is a potluck Christmas-type meeting, so I don't know if I'll go to that since I don't know anyone. Guess I'll aim for January.
Thanks, guys!

Sandy,
You might as well goto the dinner. What better way to meet some fellow herpers than over some food? Just be the best cook ;) Opt to bring a dessert because everyone loves dessert.

hmmm . . . espresso dark chocolate cake to die for? Super moist, rich, decadent--not for the faint-hearted type of cake?
Sandy;
"I'm sure you would think I'm far too old to be any fun . . . ;-)"
I doubt that....
"espresso dark chocolate cake to die for? Super moist, rich, decadent--not for the faint-hearted "
Sounds delectable, but I've got a better dessert in mind, bayby....raaarrr!

Oh, no, Aaron, don't worry--he hasn't scared me off! Michael, thanks for the kind words, but really--you're _such_ a flatterer!
So, Erik, we've totally hi-jacked your thread about your 1.2 het pied balls--what are your plans? You must have some sort of breeding schedule in mind!
Seems Sandy here is a good sport, I'm not too worried about scaring her off. This topic has gotten totally off topic though, I apologize for that...
I would take your male het pied and breed it to something co-dom like a spider, pastel, pinstripe, cinny, enchi.. hold back the visible mophs poss. het pied females and prove them out. Then get the two het pied ladies working for their food and make little baby pieds.
I'm breeding my male pied this year to a few super pastel females and a few lesser girls until my female pieds are ready to go.
Here's my group:

I hate you. I'm entirely jealous. Breed the male to a pinstripe. It's what I would do!

What a gorgeous group! That's the only way I like the white. Erik and Michael are going to have some very interesting babies someday . . .

Hahaha, hijack away! It was getting to be fair comedy.
Yeah, I'm going to breed as I can, then hold back the adult hets and any visuals that may come around. I should have adults I'll be able to breed the following season, then season after that I should be able to breed the visuals either to each other or back to the known hets.
Pretty soon, I'll be smothered in pieds, that will be cool!

Send some my way then :(

Surely you'd rather your exciting new pieds be the center of attention rather than our "fair comedy"!
Maybe by the time you are ready to share babies I'll be ready to branch out into a different morph! At this rate, you'll have every one of the offspring sold before you ever get any! :)

I'm going to revive this thread with some genetics questions.
For those with pieds and het pieds, have you seen the spied? (Spider x pied) I've only seen a picture, one picture and the only part that wasn't white was the head. Which really kind of bothered me. I would have liked to seen if the body would have taken the spider pattern. Does anyone think that the pied genetics just sort of takes over the dominant genes? It was the same with the super black pastel x pied.
I'm just curious because I thought the pinstripe pied would look rather cool.

The amount of white is believed to be purely random. I'm certain there are other spider x pieds that have more of the pattern on them. Pied does screw with the patterning, though, so it would be interesting to see what it does.
I'm curious to know if there are factors that can change the amount of white. Is it really random? If the eggs are incubated at 89.5 vs 90 or 89? Does 88% humidity during development bring different results than 92%?
I don't like those 90% white pieds, 70% MAX, if I wanted a white snake, (lol, whitesnake) I would go get a lucy.
I'll be honest, the ony crosses I like with pieds is the abino pied and the super cinny pied, only because the pied gene bitchslaps any co-dom gene into oblivion and it really isn't even worth doing if you can't see it. I want to SEE the time an effort that was put into the animal.

Like a pied super black pastel.
Glauugugu uu mmmmmmm.
Same thing as the super cinnamon ;)
The albino pieds look very nice. The snake keeper has pied clowns! They don't look much different than the pieds though. I think the pastel pieds are decent, and a super pastel pied might be something interesting to see.
Otherwise I agree with Mykee, it's not that great unless you can SEE the two morphs.
