View Full Version : Feeding my BRB
I have a fairly new Brazilian Rainbow Boa and have some questions about feeding him. I have been doing what the dude at the pet store said, 1 pinkie(tiny pinkie lol) every 4 days, he's 3 months old and about...a little more than a foot. He's swallowing it fairly quickly and the food is no longer visible after about 12 hours...should I upsize?

Definetely! You're probably slightly underfeeding the snake by now. I would upto fuzzies by your description. With a pic and something in it for size reference we could better help you.
i might even go alittle bit bigger, a boa will get big fast and the bigger the food the longer you can go without feeding
here are some pictures of him....8280

He might be able to take a couple fuzzies in a single feeding. Or you could try a small hopper. If he can't eat it, he'll just stop trying.
you were feeding him pinks lol.

Chase don't laugh or mock. He listened to the pet store and after realizing it doesn't quite look like enough food he came here to ask and learn something. He was being a cautious owner.
i wasnt mocking he just looks a lil to big for pinks if ya get my drift
Well sorry lol, I didn't even notice he got bigger...But I'm going to a reptile store on saturday so then i'll try something bigger. And I'm a girl...if it matters lol
no i said he as in the snake or is the snake a girl
did you get he/she sexed yet

Well good to know since I used "he" in my last post.
Yah the snake looks much too big for pinkies, especially tiny ones. New snake owners don't always know when to switch up.
Oh sorry, I'm a girl, the BRB is a boy. And thank you for your help..haa
8284Oh sorry I forgot, here's him beside something....
how much did you buy him for?

Aaron, thank you for reminding people to be respectful even when someone asks a question others think should be obvious. It isn't as obvious as others think when someone doesn't already know. You guys know because you've learned.
I'm saying this because, even though I've had lots of snakes, I had never had a Ball Python until June, and I went through the same thing as you about feeding it, Finn. On another forum I got flamed because I was feeding my BP hopper mice. The pet store from which I bought my BP had been feeding him one pinky a week, which didn't seem like enough to me, but I didn't know how much bigger to go. When I talked with my mice supplier, they suggested I upsize gradually to ensure the snake would take the larger animals, so I did, and got flamed. It wasn't very comforting, that's for sure!
Don't feel badly, Finn--not knowing something from the get-go has nothing to do with you being a girl. Boys don't know things without learning, either! We all have to learn somehow, and it's really nice when someone like Aaron helps us learn without trying to make us feel stupid.
Your snake is beautiful, by the way. I love his markings! Hmmm . . . maybe I need two snakes?
Hmmm...I got him for...uhh lol I think 300 and I didn't mean I'm a noob at feeding because i'm a girl I said that because someone kept saying he lol...
i would try him on a small fuzzie, maybe a few

Just go with a single fuzzy for now. I did apologize to you Finn for calling you a "he".
Lastly, wow 300? Does anyone else think that's over paying?

I would say that $300 is a little expensive!
I think that I paid $225 for my female, and I paid $165 for my male.
Well if he was overpriced or not it doesn't really matter because he's just about the sweetest thing you'll ever meet ^.^

You're absolutely right! If you didn't mind paying the price, that is all that matters:)

It matters to me. It's because prices then can become inflated. It's all about the economy. It's a large ripple effect. Of course I'm saying this mostly because it's all I've been hearing about in the news and from everyone!
Ok, ok Aaron I understand what you mean. He might have been overpriced or not but it seemed like the right price for a snake like that from a pet store and besides, I didn't even have to tame him (lol, what I mean is that he was extremely docile when I bought him) So 250-300 ( they gave me a discount so he was 250 but the sign on the actual tank said 299) I'd pay the price any time and I'm going to have him for quite a while (hopefuly.) For 10-15 years, 300 is nothing. (To me)

Some people it's a lot. Depending on their own financial situations :P
250 is a whole lot more reasonable.
Thats true...like my brother says (and won't stop saying) Different stokes for different folks...

Thanks everyone, I gave him the biggest pinkie I have right now (getting more tomorow)
It almost had fur and whiskers (lol.) My BRB seemed pretty happy with it.

As a breeder of brazilian rainbow boas i start all my babies on two rat pinks for there first meal i produced from my breeders a huge number this year. If you want to see pictures of my babies you can see them on the BC Reptile Club Forum. PS i have them listed with prices in the classified section there as well.

Oh, what a sexist comment to make.
Your BRB is beautiful, but totally ready for larger food. If you can't see a bulge as it goes down (as pinky mice wouldn't even be noticable in this instance) it's time to move up.
I am always amazed at the size "prey" I give my guys. Maybe they just look different when they're frozen.
NO NO NO lol!! i mean i'm a girl because someone kept calling me a he. being a girl has nothign to do with feeding a snake (lol).
and i'm feeding him bigger food now.

I think you could give it 1 small adult mouse a week,or 10 days,im sure it will take it. mine eat mice as soon as i can get them on em,then i switch to rats, more vitamins.and no i dont think he is to small for a mouse
i really want a BRB
Me too, they are gorgeous.
beautifull boa..i really want 1 now...
