Inquring about blood pythons

I am debating between getting a burmese and a red blood. Which
are better in your opinion. I like both equil.

although i am EXTREMELY bias towards this question, id say get a blood only because of the size difference.....
Even a borneo would be good.
Burms are just too big for me and probably most keepers...
Unless u have family members/friends that will constantly aid u in handling a burm, u wont be able to handle him/her alone.
Although, bloods can be aggressive they are smaller and u can deal with an aggressive blood. where as burms are usually calm, but can "click" and u wont expect it.

I REALLY like the colouration in the red bloods more so than in the burmese. But they can be more diffcult to breed can't they?
I know they need approximatly 80% humity is there any thing other inportant needs they have? Sorry to ask this type of question but I have been going through the pro's and con's of each and just wanted to see waht everybody else thinks.:eb:

Maybe its not that blood pythons are harder to breed, i'd say it more like its much easier to breed burms, if ya catch what im sayin'....
Theres a care sheet on this website if u havn't already checked it out.....60% humidity is best but no lower...up to 70 is ok....

Same reason as Grant, the girth without the lenght.

Also, since you want to breed them, I don't know witch one is easier. But, since burm get huge, has alot of baby, seal for cheap (well, the normal phase) and are not good animal for most of the people, I rather see more blood on the canadian marcket :)

But if you want a RED blood, ask to see the parent, some turn more yellow/brown even as adult. Borneo are nice too, just a little smaller but, IMO, nothing can beat the orange eyes of a true black blood:D

I agree with Grant. I would reccommend a blood or short tailed python over a burm. They are more maneageable in size and one person can maintain and handle these snakes alone. Health and safety of the handler and snake are number one priorities. If you want a burm here's a few things to consider:

-do you have the $$ for the *huge* enclosures it will need and the amount of food it will consume (and of course vet bills)?
-do you have someone that will assist you in handling the snake whenever you want to bring it out or clean its cgae or what have you?
-will you be able to accomodate this snake a few years down the road? (I just read you are 19)

I don't believe one species being more breedable than the other should be influential in a decision like this, since they are both being bred successfully in captivity.

Jez: Although it would be nice to see the parents in a situation like this...its damn near impossible here in Canada.....Unless u purchase one from henry piorun or Don patterson Who are doing joint breeding together, u wont be able to see any parents as most of the bloods/short tails are imports.....\
And babies of one clutch can be many different shades of colours so u'll never be guaranteed the outcome of ur purchase....And if u didn't know....there adult colours dont actually come until 1-2 years of age....so u can try to handpic the prettiest of the clutch but that doesn't gaurantee notin'.
Goodluck though, go for a blood...hehe

There was someone in montreal breeding them. I don't know if he still does, I saw a classified add last spring for the clutch he just hatch. I think he has trouble selling them so he stop.

And you right about saying even if you see the parent dosen't mean that their offspring will look like them but it's a better indication than to only look at the color of the hatchling, that's why I sugest that.

Can anyone recommend a web page that would have all mutations of the blood python. I have only seen pic's of the normal, red, and albino. Or if any one could post any pics of you're bloods that would be awesome:D I have not seen the black bloods before.... Also could anyone give a rough estimate of prices of morphs. sorry for all the trouble.

In my oppinion , I would also suggest the blood although I do think that burms are much better on other aspects ..

Burms are amazingly docile .. I have seen and handled over 100 different burm and i woul say that 95% of them were perfectly tames - in general, there very tamed.. can't say that about a blood .. from what I heard from others .. they can be very agressive like they can be tamed..

Size: Bloods, In my oppinion are the perfect sized sanek for anyone althought some ppl (maybe not you) love larer snaeks (I personally do) .. If size is a problem though THEN DON'T GET ONE .. and don't forget there is a huge difference between the size in males and females ..

Breeding: Both can be succesfully bred .. although burms are bred very easilly and bloods can be much harder in my oppinion...

Price: Burms are cheaper .. way cheaper and if you want an adult .. don't buy him ... there fairly easy to find and adopt .. I never paid for my pair! And youd be helping out a little guy!

Patterns/collours: Personally i think both look amazing - so you decide!

Handling : If your smart two ppl for a large burm and one for a blood

Food : I would say at first food intake prices are simallar (burms eat larger prey but not often .. but in the long run it can get very costly

Vet .. I would say that burms are much more susceptible to mouth rot and Ri than bloods .. but that is just a personal opppinion ... vet bills should be simillar ..

As i said personally go with the blood unless you really know what you are getting into .. I love burms and got two! If you realy want one .. don't buy a baby if you don;t have too .. adoptr one!

To my knowledge, there have been 3 deaths from burms being handled improperly within the past year... i know in my books that can count towards being potentially dangerous. No matter how "tame" the animal appears to be... even after 20 years, you must never lose sight that it is a wild animal with insincts that are merely supressed, but can be unleashed at any time with no warning.

Lol... if only it were a matter of "tameness", I would go fetch myself a green burm or a sweet lil peruvian with a flaming tail :firestart *sigh* the limitations of a lone herper :(

linds i agree that you should always be wery of any thing that can kill you BUT 90% of attacks by burms or the falt of the handler not the snake improper feeding proceedures,and alcohol are usually the leading factor( by alcohol i mean some one who has been drinking who starts handling there snake). these are things that shouldnt be done no matter what the size of snake you have ( i know from experience do to being bit and coiled by my 16 foot burm do to feeding error)
