View Full Version : Did my juvenile gopher snake have a seizure?

I walked up to his cage to check him out and he looked very stiff as if he was cold. Then he looked upwards, his neck and body cringed up, he started twisting and turning over uncontrollably. I am not making this up. The only thing I can relate it to is a seizure or a stroke. His mouth was open like his jaw was locked. As he twisted around he got sand packed into his throat and windpipe. I picked him up and ran lukewarm water into his mouth so he didn't suffocate. He remained stiff and unresponsive for about twenty minutes. He looked a little better before I went to bed. This morning he had pooped and started shedding in pieces like a lizard. I know that is an unhealthy sign. I can't take him to a vet because the closest one is two hours away and very expensive. Someone told me it might be a brain virus?
Any suggestions? Please help.

What is his setup like? His temps? How often and what is he eating?

I had him set up the same way I did my Bullsnake who is now six years old. Sand bottom cage, under tank heating pad on one side, water bowl, hiding log. Research says parasite or low blood sugar. He has eaten and shed since the "seizure" or whatever it was. He seems fine now so I completely sterilized his cage and put only newspaper inside. I hoping for the best. I have had snakes for years and never seen anything like that. It was like he was possessed.

Sounds like a neurological issue of some sort. Any chance it was exposed to any type chemical etc.? Mark
