This has probably been posted 100 times before but i can't find it. How big do bloods get? About the size of a ball just fatter???
Also how much should i pay for a baby or very young blood(a normal) ?

I'm sure Grant will get this one when he gets on.. {G} I believe he has one around 6' - I think the norm is around 5-6' long and oh yeah they get fat, like a telephone pole! As for price, I've seen them for $150 ea. for babies. We paid $75 each from Ben Siegel Reptiles at the Raleigh, NC show. As Grant told me when we were considering them... you won't regret getting a blood - they are fascinating creatures. He was absolutely right. They have a personality all their own that is for sure!

Mike,

Your actually in a good position to get a blood python.
Seeing that it sounds like you cant have a huge collection nor are you really interested in breeding it at the moment, you can get a hatchling and have it for atleast a couple yrs before it attains a solid size.
Think about your options first.
You can go with either brongersmai AKA Blood python, Brietensteini AKA Borneo short-tail, or Curtus AKA Sumatran "Black" short-tail.
All three are beautiful in there own way .

The norm for bloods are to be the biggest, then borneos, then blacks. But theres always the odd ball.
I personally dont think bloods get as big as one may think, i know when i got into them i thought they were gonna be huge once adult, and built cages to prove it, however, my adults look dwarfed by there 6' by 2's.
Picture a five foot ball, and multiply the girth 3-4 times, and you got yourself a beautiful fatty blood.
There not to active as adults, but if you can provide a good heat gradient, hides and a nice size water bowl. you wont be dissapointed.
Id definately go for a male.
And you should look into getting a borneo or black as well.
Dont powerfeed, feed it a good meal once every 7 days as hatchling, and every 7-10 days as a sub. This way, he wont get to big right from the get go, and he can gradually grow into a big, but not huge adult. As long as you are feeding him enough for him to remain healthy and active, doing a little growth stunting doesn't hurt.
Keep him in a rubbermaid as long as you can b/c they do so well in these! If there was a rubbermaid rack able to hold large adults and not break the bank. i would definately be using them over melamine.

Good luck with your choice. And YES....YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED! LOL

Hope this helped a little.

thanks a lot grant it actually did help. I was told by my dads friend bloods in general get a lot longer then balls. and are as troublesome (size wise) as boas. but i'm glad it isn't so. And Ben Siegel lives in deerfield beach Florida (i think it's the same one) as where jon got his. But his website has them listed for $150-$200 and they're all adults.. can u please tell me where i can get good cb hatchlings? Then i'll be out of ur hair with the questions ;)

Yes, that's the same Ben Siegel that was at the show... and show prices in Raleigh are a LOT cheaper. Siegel was ok... but service after the sale was iffy... he answered one out of two email inquiries... but the snakes were healthy so there's that I s'pose... he had about 15-20 babies last year... maybe after the first of the year he might have some more? Did you try calling him? If not, I'm sure there must be more if not in your immediate area than reletively close to you. Lemme know how ya do, and if you need some help lookin' I'd be glad to.

(it wasn't bob siegel it was a local guy) and he said that that is it for babies, thati'd have to wait until july for more borneos or anything :(

oh no you didn't offend me. i completely agree with you. "yea i want a burmese python" 4 years later they're out in the everglades releasing their legless godzilla. it isn't fair to the herpers that can house the snake and to the snake itself. I've been looking everywhere for a borneo short tail baby and i can't find any. a guy has a yellow blood. he said there are only like 3 mating pairs in america and he has one. and he's selling me the baby $300 cash. but i can't really pay that much. and i don't want to for my first blood. it is the most gorgeous snake there. but i can't :( If anybody knows of a breeder that has cb borneo short tail babys that are a decent price can you please tell me? preferably in America even better Florida. Or if a canadian breeder ships would be good too. Thanks a lot for everybodie's help.

HI, I was recently at a pet store down here in Florida and the owner was quite rude, I wanted to know more about bloods, they look so awesome, but he said I didn't want anything to do with them and that they are vicious. I think he did this because he thought I wasn't serious about buying because I'm a woman. He never did let me hold one or inquire anything more, so I'm asking you are they vicious like this man stated??? Please help!! Thanks =o)

from what i know bloods are FAR from "vicious" .. i mean they're not gonna take off an arm or a leg! A wild caught adult will tend to be aggressive but not vicious. from what i understand the bloods that are aggresive will hiss, chirp or snap when trying to take them out of their enclosure but once out they're fine. And nOT ALL bloods are like that. It goes for any snake. Some balls are aggresive. Hell i had a corn snake that thought he was an anaconda he was so aggresive. What part of Florida are you from?

Tampa area, thanks for the advice. So it's something with me knowing how to handle snakes, could handle?, not any more aggressive then a typical new snake not yet used to being handled? That's great, that guy missed out on a sale!!
