Went to the Reptile Expo in Richmond Virginia today and for a small expo I was very surprised with the variety of animals there. Everything form a vast assortments of corns for 25 bucks to a snow Ball for 10K. I picked up a normal retic, my wife thought it was so pretty...lol, we'll see when he is two years old what she thinks of him, and an amethystine scrub. The retic is really calm and very handlable, but the scrub is a different story. I have had snakes for over 15 years and the last time I got bit was over 4 years ago. I got home set up his enclosure and got him out of the bag. Held him for a couple of minutes then went to put him in. Never dealing with arboreal species before I was unaware of their tensity to tightly wrap around anything they can which in the case was my three fingers. When I put him in the cage I could not get him off and he quickly decided to show me who was the boss and tagged me on the thumb. He is little only about four feet or so so it was not a big deal but I had a good streak going and now it is busted and I have to start over. lol. Anyway, I will post some pics of him next week once he has settled in and he has taken a meal. Todd

I don't think you'll have longer than maybe a week for your next record!

Scrubs are notorious for that stuff, so are my afrocks but occassionally you find a nice one or can tame it down. Good luck with them man.

He seems to have mellowed out some. I left him alone all day night monday and when I got home from work today I took him out and held him for about 20 minutes or so. Not to bad. Once recoiled and got into an "S" postition but I stayed still and he relaxed. My big issue is what do you all do to get them off their perches. He grips the branch so tightly with the end of his tail it is soooo dificult to get him off. Do the majority of you scrub python owners use branches and/or perches? Just curious. Feeding all my snakes tomorrow so I will let you know how it goes. Todd

Hi Todd,

In my opinion it's a little bit to early to tell on how to remove your little Scrub as his "true" temperament has yet to show itself. That just comes with time and exposure to you. I've owned Scrubs who have started out sweet and turned into demons and vice versa.
I use branches /perches in my Scrub enclosures. With a nice scrub, once you use the hook and let them know you're not food you should be able to reach in and very gently unwrap them from their perch. You can remove a mean Scrub the exact same way just watch your face and be prepared to get lit up (aka bit)! Or you can use a more forceful method. The forceful method I DO NOT suggest using unless you're extremely experienced with pining properly and restraining a very hissed off snake without injuring the snake or yourself.

Give the kid more time with you to see fully what it's temperament is and then remove it according.
Good luck and congrats once again. :D
